Morgan Stanley starts Chevron at Overweight, Exxon Mobil at Equal Weight
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Devin McDermott initiated Chevron (CVX) with an Overweight rating and $146 price target and started Exxon Mobil (XOM) with an Equal Weight rating and $84 price target as he began coverage of the U.S. Integrated Oil space with an In-Line industry view. While Exxon and Chevron generated a combined $35B in organic free cash flow in 2018, McDermott contends that "the cash flow profile should diverge for these two companies" from here as Chevron focuses on measured spending and strong free cash flow while Exxon pursues an "aggressive" countercyclical growth strategy. Exxon's strategy could pay off in the long term, if properly executed, but "cash flow drives stock performance in Big Oil," McDermott tells investors.

Jefferies downgrades Anadarko to Hold, sees limited upside from here
Jefferies analyst Mark Lear downgraded Anadarko Petroleum (APC) to Hold from Buy with an unchanged price target of $78. Occidental Petroleum (OXY) yesterday confirmed weeks of speculation that a superior bid for Anadarko had been disregarded in favor of Chevron's (CVX) $65 per share offer, Lear tells investors in a research note. The analyst says that while he awaits Anadarko's response to the hostile bid, he believes Occidental's offer better recognizes the value of the company's underlying assets. Lear thinks it is possible that Chevron could come back with a slightly higher bid. However, he sees limited upside potential to Anadarko shares at this point.

Strategic value of Occidental bid less clear than Chevron's, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Devin McDermott estimated that Occidental's (OXY) cash and stock bid for Anadarko (APC) implies about $73 per share, net of the breakup fee and yesterday's move in the share price of Occidental, which is roughly a 16% premium to Chevron's (CVX) previously accepted offer. However, Occidental's proposal comes with higher risk as it relies on asset sales for funding, requires a vote by Occidental's shareholders and carries more integration risk, the analyst tells investors. He continues to believe that a deal with Chevron represents a better potential strategic combination, citing his view that Chevron would ultimately be able to extract more synergies from a transaction than Occidental. If Chevron hypothetically matched Occidental's terms, the deal accretion would still be strong and leverage would stay low, said McDermott, who noted that he has no knowledge of any intention by Chevron to increase its bid.

Occidental's raised offer for Anadarko 'not entirely surprising,' says JPMorgan
Occidental Petroleum (OXY) made a $76 per share offer this morning for Anadarko (APC), which is "not entirely surprising," JPMorgan analyst Phil Gresh tells investors in a research note, adding that the new tidbits were the magnitude of synergies that Occidental proposed, which was materially higher than Chevron's (CVX), and Occidental's corresponding asset sale plan of $10B-15B. Gresh believes the merits of this transaction hinge entirely on the execution of the large synergy number being proposed, but also says he would not be surprised if Chevron raised its $65 per share bid for Anadarko and correspondingly raised its synergy target. The analyst maintains a Neutral rating and $74 price target on Occidental Petroleum.

Raymond James says Occidental bid 'unambiguously bad' in near-term for stock
After Occidental (OXY) revealed that it has sent a letter to the Anadarko (APC) board offering to outbid Chevron (CVX) with a proposed buyout of $76 per share in cash and stock, Raymond James analyst Pavel Molchanov called this "unambiguously bad news" for Occidental shares in the very near term, including today's trading. By setting up "a virtually unprecedented scenario" of a true bidding war in the E&P industry, Occidental has put its shareholders "in a difficult position," added the analyst, who said this is a hard situation to call but he thinks Chevron is more likely to emerge as the winning suitor in the end.

Strycula also anticipates Colgate-Palmolive to benefit as it "penetrates premium segments in developed markets and increases trade-up and brushing use in emerging markets," even as he sees its oral care portfolio "priced at a 12% value discount."

Credit Suisse starts Household Products & Beverages with Constellation top pick
Credit Suisse analyst Kaumil Gajrawala rolled out coverage last night on eight names in the Household Products & Beverages space. The analyst's ratings consist of three Outperforms, two Underperforms, and three Neutrals. His top pick is Constellation Brands (STZ), which he started with an Outperform rating and $230 price target. The company offers "predictable" high-single digit revenue growth with a valuation that is "well below slower growth peers," Gajrawala tells investors in a research note. His other Outperform ratings are on Monster Beverage (MNST) and Clorox (CLX). The analyst has a $78 price target on Monster, noting it is the fastest growing company in his coverage "with runway for continued growth." He has a $172 price target on Clorox saying the company's "unique" portfolio position justifies a premium valuation. Gajrawala's Neutral rated names are Church & Dwight (CHD), Procter & Gamble (PG) and Coca-Cola (KO). His two Underperforms are PepsiCo (PEP) and Colgate-Palmolive (CL). PepsiCo has a $100 price target as the analyst sees limited upside amid the company's "stepped-up" investment years. Colgate-Palmolive, Gajrawala's less favorite name, has a $55 price target. The company's out-year margins are at risk as it reinvests to address several years of slowing growth and sales declines, Gajrawala contends.

Further, Archer Daniels shares currently trade at the low end of their historical forward price-to-earnings range and trailing 52 week share price range, adds the analyst. He sees upside potential of around 23%.

Airlines needed some good news, and Delta delivered, says Stephens
With investor sentiment on the airline space negative, the group was in need of some good news and Delta Air Lines delivered a positive surprise this morning, Stephens analyst Jack Atkins tells investors in a research note. The airline pointed Q1 RASM growth to the upper-end of its initial guidance range, lowered its Q1 CASM excluding fuel expectation and raised its Q1 earnings guidance range, says the analyst. Atkins finds it encouraging that Delta noted underlying passenger demand remains solid and that the business market led the way during the quarter. Further, the company announced an extension of its credit card partnership with American Express (AXP), which is expected to double the revenue contribution to $7B by 2023 versus 2018 levels, he notes. Atkins reiterates an Overweight rating on Delta with a $63 price target. The stock in midday trading is up 7% to $55.64. Carvana price target cut to $40 at Craig-Hallum after CarMax omni-channel news
After CarMax (KMX) announced a new omni-channel offering to allow consumers to buy a car completely from home, in-store or a combination, Craig-Hallum analyst Steve Dyer said he believes the hybrid brick-and-mortar and e-commerce platform could be the "ideal solution" for changing consumer demands. He also believes the news could put pressure on Carvana (CVNA) shares in the near-term. CarMax, which Dyer notes is the largest used vehicle retailer, is the latest competitor to increase focus on e-commerce following recent investments by Lithia (LAD) in Shift and AutoNation (AN) in Vroom, the analyst added. Dyer keeps a Hold rating on Carvana and lowered his price target on the stock to $40 from $48 to account for greater competitive threats.
