AIG downgraded to Hold from Buy at Argus
Argus analyst Jacob Kilstein downgraded AIG to Hold after its latest Q4 earnings miss driven by "catastrophe losses, large reserve charges, and poor investment results", saying the stock is consistently underperforming. The analyst believes that the company will continue to deal with "restructuring charges and higher-than-normal catastrophe losses", adding that while its price to book ratio of 0.6-times implies a discount to the peer industry average of 1.6-times, it is justified by its "below-average ROE and quarterly losses."

Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Workday (WDAY) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Cowen with analyst J. AIG (AIG) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Compass Point. 3. Bloomin' Brands (BLMN) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at William Blair with analyst Sharon Zackfia saying he sees an "undemanding valuation" at current share levels as well as the potential for an operating margin recovery to add 200 basis points over the next three to four years. 4. AIG at inflection despite disappointing Q4 results, says UBS
UBS analyst Brian Meredith said despite AIG's disappointing Q4 results, management reiterated their expectation that the General Insurance segment would achieve a profit in Q1. The analyst also said the benefit coming from their reinsurance strategy in 2019 is underappreciated by the market. He believes management's guidance of margin expansion from a rate and mix shift will be challenging to achieve, so he modeled in half of the guidance only. Meredith maintained his Buy rating and $52 price target on AIG shares.

AIG results not as strong as first look suggests, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Jimmy Bhullar says that while AIG's Q1 results exceeded expectations, they are not as strong as they appear at first glance. Results were lifted by a few unusual items, primarily high investment income, Bhullar tells investors in a post-earnings research note. Further, as in recent quarters, net earnings was considerably below operating earnings, primarily due to high realized investment losses, adds the analyst. He affirms a Neutral rating on AIG with a $52 price target citing a "lackluster outlook" for business fundamentals and concerns about downside risk to consensus earnings forecasts.

Morgan Stanley upgrades Lumentum, downgrades Acacia in optical ratings shake up
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Meta Marshall upgraded Lumentum (LITE) to Overweight from Equal Weight and downgraded Acacia Communications (ACIA) to Underweight from Equal Weight as she believes thematic transitions in the optical sector are being misvalued in the market. On Lumentum, she thinks 3D sensing estimates should be reset and believes the remainder of the year presents more opportunity for upside. Marshall raised her price target on Lumentum shares to $65 from $55. On Acacia, Marshall thinks investors are over-extrapolating its earnings power and not assigning enough risk to customer concentration. However, the analyst raised her price target on Acacia shares to $44 from $38, noting that she is early with her downgrade and believes the company could "post meaningful beats" in the next 6-9 months. Outside of these two outlier ratings, Marshall has an Equal Weight rating on optical components providers Infinera (INFN), II-VI (IIVI) and Ciena (CIEN).

JPMorgan a buyer of Ciena and Lumentum into Q1 results, downgrades Sensata
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee names Ciena (CIEN) and Lumentum (LITE) his top Networking Equipment picks into the Q1 reporting season. The analyst is a buyer of both stocks into the prints. Following the rallies year-to-date, investors might need to be more selective relative to opportunities for further share price upside heading into earnings, Chatterjee tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. He believes the overall capital expenditure environment remains positive and that momentum into 5G investment spend appears to be building, particularly in North America. This is likely provide greater visibility to companies relative to their already stated full-year targets, says Chatterjee. However, with investor optimism around 5G infrastructure investment as well as the positive impact on growth from a potential U.S.-China trade deal, the analyst expects share price performances to be largely muted on the back of Q1 earnings. Nonetheless, he sees upside opportunity in both Ciena and Lumentum. Chatterjee also reinstated coverage of CommScope (COMM) and upgraded the shares to Overweight from Neutral, upgraded Viavi Solutions (VIAV) to Neutral from Underweight, and downgraded Sensata (ST) to Neutral from Overweight. A further multiple re-rating of Sensata shares appears unlikely in an environment of moderating auto production this year, contends the analyst.

Kraft Heinz downgraded to Underweight from Neutral at Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Lavery downgraded Kraft Heinz to Underweight from Neutral and lowered his price target for the shares to $31 from $35. Expectations for the company's 2020 earnings are likely too high as it plans divestitures of underperforming businesses, which could be 20c-30c dilutive on a per share basis, Lavery tells investors in a research note. He believes a new CEO is the right move, but also that incremental brand spending is needed to rejuvenate Kraft Heinz's "dusty brands," which he thinks could weigh on earnings by another 15c-20c per share.

TowerJazz (TSEM) downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Credit Suisse with analyst Quang Tung Le saying to reflect ongoing weakness at the company's "key" radio frequency and power customers along with revised three- year deal extension with Panasonic, the analyst reduced his sales estimates. 3. Marriott (MAR) downgraded to In Line from Outperform at Evercore ISI with analyst Rich Hightower saying approaching Q1 earnings season, the analyst finds himself "incrementally negative" on hotel stocks overall - and even more so with respect to the C-Corps than the REITs - given the sector's substantial recent outperformance against the relevant benchmarks, coupled with no obvious shift in fundamentals over the last 60-90 days. 4. Kraft Heinz delay a setback, but shouldn't impact debt covenants, says Stifel
After Kraft Heinz reported late on Friday that it could not meet the deadline to file its 10-K with the SEC, Stifel analyst Christopher Growe called the news "another setback to the company in a string of disappointments of late," but added that he does not believe this means the SEC investigation has widened or that the filing impacts any of the company's debt covenants. He does not, however, think the company can pursue an asset sale now until the 10-K is filed. Growe, who expects the shares to trade down on this news given that investors currently have "a very skeptical tone" in relation to Kraft Heinz, keeps a Hold rating and $35 price target on the stock.

As previously reported, Longbow analyst Alton Stump downgraded McDonald's (MCD) to Neutral from Buy. Under Armour discounts flat to down for 12th straight month, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Randal Konik says his firm's March webscrapes illustrate that Under Armour's (UAA) percentage of product on discount is flat to down for the twelfth month in a row year-over-year, Jefferies analyst Randal Konik tells investors in a research note. Further, the webscrapes show Adidas's (ADDYY) percentage of product on discount is up for the twelfth month in a row year-over-year, adds the analyst. In addition, visits to Finish Line (FINL), Foot Locker (FL), and Under Armour websites reveal the HOVR, Project Rock, and Curry 6 are sold out in several sizes, indicating strong demand, says Konik. He believes Nike (NKE) continues to dominate Adidas in running in the U.S., with strength in Air VaporMax and Air Max 270. Under Armour Q1 expectations 'at least achievable,' says Piper Jaffray

Currently, Under Armour (UAA) online clearance styles are down 19% year-over-year versus Nike's (NKE) down 5% and Adidas' (ADDYY) up 96%. The analyst believes industry competition "should remain rational" during 2019. Further, Q1 consensus expectations for Under Armour are "at least achievable" and management should maintain fiscal 2019 guidance, Murphy tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. The analyst this quarter has seen on-going traction with HOVR's footwear platform, broader focus with Under Armour's women's and a well-supported launch of Rush. Deutsche lowers probability of U.S., China trade deal after Huawei CFO arrest
Following reports that the CFO of Huawei was detained in Canada on December 1 due to an U.S. extradition request over Iran sanctions, Deutsche Bank analyst Zhiwei Zhang lowered his probability of the U.S. and China reaching a trade deal by March 1 to 30% from 40%. The arrest is a "clear signal that the trade war is escalating to a new level," Zhang tells investors in a research note partially titled "Huawei case is a big deal." U.S. business interests in China "face higher risk than before," says the analyst. He points out that Huawei has been widely recognized as one of the most successful technology companies in China.
