Micron, Skyworks, Qorvo among chipmakers exposed to Huawei, says Morgan Stanley

Following media reports discussing a potential ban of sales from U.S. companies to Huawei, Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore identified semiconductor companies with exposure to the company, including Skyworks (SWKS), Qorvo (QRVO), Broadcom (AVGO), Analog Devices (ADI), ON Semiconductor (ON), Maxim (MXIM), Texas Instruments (TXN), Xilinx (XLNX), Micron (MU) and Inphi (IPHI). In his note, Moore recalled that a similar ban on ZTE (ZTCOY) last year was ultimately removed.

Low likelihood Apple iPhones feel 'brunt of tariffs,' says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes that there continues to be a lot of noise and confusion around the recently hiked 25% Chinese tariff and its potential impact on the tech food chain, semiconductor names like Nvidia (NVDA), Micron (MU), and Intel (INTC), and Apple (AAPL). Commenting on the news around the Trump administration's ban on Huawei products in the U.S., the analyst says he expects a "lot more sand to be thrown in the sand box between the Beltway and Shanghai until the G-20 talks," but cautions investors on Apple to not jump to conclusions. Many are "yelling fire in a crowded theater" saying this tariff issue will be a major fundamental blow to Apple, but the analyst "strongly" disagrees. Ives ultimately thinks there is a low likelihood that Apple and its iPhones feel the brunt of the tariff, and notes that the more concerning issue is around any hit in demand if Apple feels the noise in China and any pro Huawei sentiment negatively impacting sales in the near-term. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating and a $235 price target on Apple's shares.

Cost of making Apple iPhones may go up amid U.S./China trade battle, says Wedbush
with its own $60B shot across the bow, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives says that semiconductor names such as Nvidia (NVDA), Intel (INTC), and Micron (MU) among others represent clear worries that a potential supply chain disruption could be in the cards along with higher component costs being passed down the tech ecosystem and thus softening demand globally. While many U.S. companies are impacted by this latest trade tension, the "poster child for the U.S./China UFC battle" continues to be Apple (AAPL), with fears running rampant that these latest tariffs could significantly increase the cost of iPhones globally, he contends. Based on his analysis, Ives believes the cost of making iPhones currently will go up by roughly 2%-3%. However, if the Trump administration decides to levy a tariff on the additional $325B of Chinese goods over the coming weeks/months this would be more of a potential game changer from the perspective of the incremental costs to Apple and its iPhone production with expenses that could escalate by roughly 10%-plus over time. He reiterates an Outperform rating and a $235 price target on Apple shares.

Intel report positive for AMD, negative for Nvidia, says Stifel
After Intel (INTC) reported Q1 results and lowered its FY19 revenue guidance by about 3.5%, Stifel analyst Kevin Cassidy noted that management said the data center inventory and capacity digestion period they had described in January was more pronounced than expected, calling out increased headwinds in China. He views the weaker data center outlook as negative for Nvidia (NVDA), but sees less risk to his AMD (AMD) estimates given the company's market share growth and limited data center exposure in China. Also, Intel's guidance for Q2 PC revenue to decline high single digits could suggest AMD market share gains and/or Intel customers reducing inventory following many quarters of CPU shortages, said Cassidy. He views the likely shift away from HDDs indicated by Intel as negative for Seagate (STX) and Western Digital (WDC). In terms of NAND, Intel described an "incrementally more challenging" pricing environment, though Cassidy maintains his outlook for Western Digital and Micron (MU), contending that the impact of industry wide supply cuts should begin to ease the supply/demand imbalance later this year.

Skyworks price target raised to $99 from $84 at Canaccord

With the near-term weakness subsiding entering the second half of 2019 and the market absorbing excess smartphone inventory, Walkley tells investors in a research note that he believes the RF total addressable market for smartphones remains a stronger growth market than the semi market for the next several years due to more complex smartphone mix among Chinese OEMs, growing IoT opportunities, and the upcoming 5G market opportunity. He also believes Skyworks' diverse analog portfolio positions its Broad Market division for double-digit annual growth longer-term driven by content share in markets such as WiFi, wireless infrastructure, automotive, and the IoT markets.

Google beta of AI hardware platform positive for Broadcom, says JPMorgan
Google (GOOG, GOOGL) last week at its developer's conference announced that it is offering its flagship artificial intelligence/deep learning hardware platform, called TPU, to the public in beta, JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur tells investors in a research note. The analyst views the announcement as positive for Broadcom (AVGO) as he believes the company has co-developed all three generations of Google's TPU AI processor customer chips. Further, Sur thinks Broadcom has also won Google's next generation TPU 4.0 processor chip design, which he believes is targeted for ramp in 2021. Cirrus Logic ANC not in new Apple AirPods 2, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss says that recent iFixit teardown confirms Cirrus Logic's (CRUS) Adaptive Noise Cancelation, or ANC, is not in the new Apple (AAPL) AirPods 2. The analyst believes shares of Cirrus Logic have risen 30%-plus since hitting their low in the beginning of January on investor belief that it was in the AirPods 2. The low power codec looks very similar to the previously used Maxim Integrated (MXIM) codec, which leads the analyst to believe Apple is likely using Maxim Integrated again. Acacia Communications price target raised to $60 from $42 at MKM Partners
MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese raised his price target on Acaia Communications (ACIA) to $60 after its strong Q4 results and better than expected Q1 guidance. The analyst says the performance was "driven by the completion of ZTE's (ZTCOY) post-ban catch-up spending" and also notes that the "timing risks" in 2019 China demand picture are offset by the "new tenders and projects" in the market. Genovese is keeping his Neutral rating on Acaia Communications however because of its "full" valuation and a lofty consensus calling for 30% revenue growth in 2019 following a 12% decline in 2018.
