Capital spending slows in Q1 amid ongoing trade concerns, WSJ reports

Capital spending has slowed in Q1 for a broad cross-section of large, U.S. listed companies raising investor concerns that a key driver of economic growth is fading, the Wall Street Journal's Amrith Ramkumar and Theo Francis report, citing sources. According to an analysis, capital spending increased 3% from a year earlier in Q1 at 356 S&P 500 companies, down from a 20% rise in the year-ago period for the same companies, and executives have said ongoing trade tensions with China are making them cautious, increasing the prospect that slower business spending may impede economic growth later in 2019 and 2020. Among the ten firms that spent the most last year, five decreased their spending in Q1 including Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Apple (AAPL), AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ). Reference Link

Sony, Microsoft JV a 'surprsing turn' in 'battle for living room,' says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said he views the joint venture pact between competitors Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) on cloud-based gaming services as both "surprising" and a validation of the emerging market for streaming. The two companies clearly view video games as strategically important enough to put aside their intense competition and see Google (GOOGL) as a legitimate competitor and the Stadia streaming platform as a credible threat, said Sebastian, who added that he does not believe this means Sony and Microsoft will forego their separate console hardware platforms. He also believes that video game developers and publishers should benefit from the intensifying battle among platform companies for share of the game market and the "living room audience." Publicly traded game makers include Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two (TTWO).

Google beta of AI hardware platform positive for Broadcom, says JPMorgan
Google (GOOG, GOOGL) last week at its developer's conference announced that it is offering its flagship artificial intelligence/deep learning hardware platform, called TPU, to the public in beta, JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur tells investors in a research note. The analyst views the announcement as positive for Broadcom (AVGO) as he believes the company has co-developed all three generations of Google's TPU AI processor customer chips. Further, Sur thinks Broadcom has also won Google's next generation TPU 4.0 processor chip design, which he believes is targeted for ramp in 2021. In addition, the analyst adds that Broadcom has less than 2% total revenue exposure to Huawei. Sur reiterates an Overweight rating on Broadcom with a $365 price target.

Alphabet price target raised to $1,400 from $1,300 at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Lloyd Walmsley raised his price target for Alphabet (GOOG) to $1,400 from $1,300 and keeps a Buy rating on the shares. The analyst also increased his estimates to reflect confidence in its medium- term outlook coming out of the Google Marketing Live keynote in San Francisco. He sees an accelerating pace of new advertising product, which makes him "meaningfully more confident" in Alphabet's 2020 outlook. The company has among the best ad product pipelines since the addition of the third paid link in mobile in 2015, Walmsley tells investors in a research note.

Craig-Hallum downgrades Cray to Hold, but says bidding war possible
Craig-Hallum analyst Chad Bennett downgrade Cray (CRAY) to Hold from Buy after the company announced a deal to be acquired by HP Enterprise (HPE) for $35 per share, but he added that he thinks a bidding war is possible since he doesn't believe the stock buyout price "has even begun to value" Cray's proprietary interconnect technology and its modular software stack for next generation AI/ML workloads. He believes there could be a number of interested parties in Cray including Microsoft (MSFT), Dell (DELL), Intel (INTC), Google (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN) and potentially IBM (IBM).

Credit Suisse incrementally more positive on Alphabet's 2020 growth prospects
Credit Suisse analyst Stephen Ju attended Google's annual advertiser conference Marketing Live and came away with an "incrementally more positive" viewpoint for revenue growth prospects for 2020 and beyond. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating and a $1,400 price target on the shares given ongoing monetization improvements in Search through product updates, larger-than-expected contribution from Google's larger non-Search businesses, and optionality for value creation from new monetization initiatives such as Maps and the eventual commercialization of Other Bets.

Apple pullback 'a particularly attractive buying opportunity,' says BofA/Merrill
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Wamsi Mohan estimated that the net impact to Apple if and when iPhones sold in the U.S. are subject to a 25% tariff would be about 2c per 1M phones, or $1 in overall EPS, assuming unchanged pricing. Noting that Apple shares have already declined 12% from their recent highs, Mohan said he views the tariff-related pullback as "a particularly attractive buying opportunity" and he keeps a Buy rating on Apple with a $230 price target.

Low likelihood Apple iPhones feel 'brunt of tariffs,' says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes that there continues to be a lot of noise and confusion around the recently hiked 25% Chinese tariff and its potential impact on the tech food chain, semiconductor names like Nvidia (NVDA), Micron (MU), and Intel (INTC), and Apple (AAPL). Commenting on the news around the Trump administration's ban on Huawei products in the U.S., the analyst says he expects a "lot more sand to be thrown in the sand box between the Beltway and Shanghai until the G-20 talks," but cautions investors on Apple to not jump to conclusions. Many are "yelling fire in a crowded theater" saying this tariff issue will be a major fundamental blow to Apple, but the analyst "strongly" disagrees. Ives ultimately thinks there is a low likelihood that Apple and its iPhones feel the brunt of the tariff, and notes that the more concerning issue is around any hit in demand if Apple feels the noise in China and any pro Huawei sentiment negatively impacting sales in the near-term. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating and a $235 price target on Apple's shares.

Apple price target lowered to $175 from $180 at Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Jeffrey Kvaal lowered his price target for Apple to $175 from $180 saying the renewal of China trade tensions is a likely near-term negative for the company. The analyst reduced his fiscal 2019 estimates out of trade caution. Further, Kvaal says the "record low" Q1 upgrade rates at U.S. operators also suppress his optimism for a long-term recovery in replacement rates, which he expects to weigh on Apple's fiscal 2020 estimates.

Cost of making Apple iPhones may go up amid U.S./China trade battle, says Wedbush
with its own $60B shot across the bow, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives says that semiconductor names such as Nvidia (NVDA), Intel (INTC), and Micron (MU) among others represent clear worries that a potential supply chain disruption could be in the cards along with higher component costs being passed down the tech ecosystem and thus softening demand globally. While many U.S. companies are impacted by this latest trade tension, the "poster child for the U.S./China UFC battle" continues to be Apple (AAPL), with fears running rampant that these latest tariffs could significantly increase the cost of iPhones globally, he contends. Based on his analysis, Ives believes the cost of making iPhones currently will go up by roughly 2%-3%. However, if the Trump administration decides to levy a tariff on the additional $325B of Chinese goods over the coming weeks/months this would be more of a potential game changer from the perspective of the incremental costs to Apple and its iPhone production with expenses that could escalate by roughly 10%-plus over time. He reiterates an Outperform rating and a $235 price target on Apple shares.

Sprint, T-Mobile headlines positive for Dish, Intelsat, says Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Brett Feldman, while taking no view on the outcome of the proposed merger between Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS), laid out his thoughts for other industry participants following the Wall Street Journal's report that the Department of Justice is unlikely to approve the deal as currently structured. The analyst believes investors will initially see the headlines as negative for the other major wireless carriers, namely AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), since they "create uncertainty over long-term industry structure." Further, investors will initially see these headlines as a slight positive for tower operators American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI) and SBA Communications (SBAC) as they "imply less risk of material cell site decommissioning," Feldman told investors earlier in a research note. The analyst also thinks investors will view the Journal's report as positive for owners of excess spectrum such as Dish (DISH) and Intelsat (I) and a slight positive for cable operators like Altice USA (ATUS), Charter (CHTR) and Comcast (CMCSA).

Northcoast upgrades Generac to Buy as emerging play on 5G growth
As previously reported, Northcoast analyst Tom Hayes upgraded Generac to Buy from Neutral as he sees significant benefits from its increased closing rates for home standby units and the backup power needs associated with 5G growth. Spending for the infrastructure for 5G is expected to ramp to $26B in 2022 and Generac has established relationships with Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T) and T-Mobile (TMUS), noted Hayes, who believes the company is likely used by the major carriers in a significant percentage of all their back-up power needs. CenturyLink upgraded to Neutral on cash flow, cost cutting at Citi
As previously reported, Citi analyst Michael Rollins upgraded CenturyLink (CTL) to Neutral from Sell. While he said the company reported "another mixed quarter" and he thinks the pace of revenue decline should continue to depress the multiple, the company's "aggressive" cost cutting, cash flow and dividend yield should provide downside support, Rollins tells investors. He remains cautious on whether CenturyLink can create value by separating its consumer business, he added. Rollins recommends that investors seeking dividends in Telco buy AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) instead.

Amdocs price target lowered to $67 from $70 at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Jackson Ader lowered his price target for Amdocs (DOX) to $67 from $70 saying that while the company's fiscal Q2 results were better than expected, the commentary on AT&T (T) is the main takeaway. AT&T revenue is off to a worse start for the first half than the company had expected as the focus on cost cutting and debt reduction within AT&T continues, Ader tells investors in a research note. The analyst does not see "this AT&T headwind going anywhere" and he keeps a Neutral rating on Amdocs.

5G financial impact won't be felt by Verizon until 2021/22, says Morgan Stanley
After attending Verizon's first analyst day in seven years, Morgan Stanley analyst Simon Flannery said the company provided "a lot of helpful material" on its 5G plans, but provided limited incremental information around deployment timelines or business models. The analyst, said it seems that the financial impact of 5G will not be felt by Verizon until the 2021/22 period, also said that it appears to him that operational momentum from 2018 is continuing into 2019. Flannery maintains an Equal Weight rating on Verizon with a $58 price target on the shares.
