Baird says Lowe's Q1 a 'mixed bag,' use weakness as buying opportunity
Baird analyst Peter Benedict called Lowe's Q1 report a "mixed bag," with better than expected U.S. comps that more than offset weaker margins, resulting in a ~9% EBIT shortfall. While encouraged by the stronger top line, Benedict tells investors in a research note that Q1's disappointing margin performance and outlook serves as a "painful" reminder than P&L progress will not be linear. The analyst, who maintains an Outperform rating and $133 price target, says with sales critical and a still meaningful opportunity to improve execution across multiple areas of the business, he continues to see a compelling turnaround story developing at Lowe's and would use today's weakness as a good long-term buying opportunity.

Lowe's recent selloff presents buying opportunity, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Zachary Fadem noted that Lowe's shares are down 5% in the past week, which he blames on weather concerns and renewed tariff fears. While Fadem lowered his Q1 comp growth estimate to 2.4% cut his EPS estimate to $1.32, and noted that both are now below consensus, he said he views the pullback as a buying opportunity ahead of easing comparisons for the remainder of the year and self-help initiatives that he expects to drive improving results. Fadem keeps an Outperform rating on Lowe's ahead of the company's earnings report on May 22.

Trex Company's second half and 2020 'looking strong,' says DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Kurt Yinger kept his Buy rating and $79 price target on Trex Company (TREX), saying the recent Q1 results from Home Depot (HD) highlighted a "healthy" underlying repair and remodel market with "solid" comps in April recovering from weather related constraints. The analyst expects production issues to weigh on Trex's first half but believes that the back half of 2019 and 2020 will be strong. Yinger cites the "underlying repair and remodel demand/spend", the shifting trend in deck repair to composite from wood, and the company's ability to gain market share with shelf space wins at Lowe's (LOW) along with "expanded stocking positions within the dealer channel."

JPMorgan lowers Q1 comp estimates for Home Depot and Lowe's
To reflect "not-so-cooperative" weather and a softer backdrop following his firm's annual Spring tours, JPMorgan analyst Christopher Horvers lowered his U.S. Q1 comp estimate for Home Depot (HD) to 3.7% from 4.0% and for Lowe's to 2.7% from 3.2%. Target's Q1 beat 'high quality, with stronger comps, firmer GM, says Baird
Baird analyst Peter Benedict reiterated an Outperform rating, Fresh Pick designation and $90 price target on Target following the company's "high quality" Q1 beat, as stronger comps and firmer gross margin drove roughly 6% EBIT and about 7% EPS upside. Benedict tells investors in a research note that Target's results reinforce his view that Target's relevance with consumers is rising and efforts to restore positive operating profit growth are gaining traction. With shares at about 12x EPS, prospects for meaningful multiple expansion remain good, he adds.

Equal Weight
Target upgraded to Equal Weight following recent 15% pullback at Morgan Stanley
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman upgraded Target to Equal Weight from Underweight, citing his view that the 15% pullback in the stock over the past month leaves less near-term downside and that the company "appears to be past peak margin pain." Though he is modeling flattish EBIT margins in 2019, which is below Target's guidance for about 10 bps expansion, Gutman believes the risk of a margin miss is appropriately reflected in the stock's current valuation. He maintains a $67 price target on Target shares.

Lawsuit against Teva, others to hit generic drug stocks, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst David Maris believes the lawsuit by 44 states against 20 generic drugmakers will weigh on generic drug stocks this week and remain an "overhang issue for some time." Actual penalties and damages are impossible to calculate, but could be material, Maris tells investors in a research note. The analyst spoke to the Connecticut attorney general's office this morning and learned they are preparing for trial in these cases. Language the attorney general has used, such as "unprecedented" and his desire to clawback all gains from collusion, should be indicative of the states' intent, Maris writes. He believes that for a sector that is generally highly levered, and with some companies named already facing an overhang from opioid litigation like Teva (TEVA), this is "especially unwelcome news."

Cowen moderates near-term expectations for cannabis group on supply constraints
After hosting investor meetings with the management of Tilray (TLRY), Cowen analyst Vivien Azer said that Canada clearly remains supply constrained and that Tilray, with its asset-light approach, is overexposed to this supply tightness. Independent of commentary from the meetings with Tilray, Azer lowered her revenue estimates throughout her Canadian cannabis coverage as her current read suggests that Q1 growth will likely be modest. Alphabet sub-20% sales growth to bring share pressure, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth expects Alphabet (GOOGL) shares to be under pressure in the near-term given the company's sub-20% revenue growth in Q1 and downward earnings revisions. The exact drivers of Alphabet's slowing sales are unclear, and frustration around the company's lack of transparency will only increase, Anmuth tells investors in a post-earnings research note. The analyst, however, points out that Alphabet has maintained 20%-plus growth for a very long time, off a large base. He maintains an Overweight rating on the stock with a $1,310 price target but prefers shares of Facebook (FB), Amazon.com (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX) to Alphabet.

Piper survey shows limited risk to Netflix from Disney streaming service
Piper Jaffray asked 1,536 U.S. Netflix (NFLX) subscribers if they would subscribe to both Disney's (DIS) new streaming service and Netflix, only Netflix or only Disney+, analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. Piper indicated that the Disney+ price point is $7 per month, which it believes will prove to be only an introductory price. The results show that 73% of U.S. Netflix subscribers do not expect to subscribe to Disney+, 20% expect to subscribe to both services, and only 7% indicated that they will cancel Netflix and subscribe to Disney+, Olson tells investors in a research note. The results suggest Netflix's risk of share loss is limited to a small percentage of its base, concludes the analyst. As such, he expects Netflix to continue to "capture a significant portion of the tidal wave of traditional content dollars that are migrating to streaming." Olson maintains an Overweight rating on Netflix shares with a $440 price target. The stock closed Friday down $1.71 to $361.04.

Jefferies says Starbucks 'can handle competitors' in China after Luckin analysis
Jefferies analyst Andy Barish remains confident on Starbucks China after analyzing Luckin overlap data. Starbucks' China business improved quarter-over-quarter in fiscal Q2, implying limited impact from competition, although investors remain concerned about Luckin Coffee, Barish tells investors in a research note. Using Thinknum/Carto data, the analyst found Luckin overlap of greater than 80% of Starbucks locations in tier one and two cities, with almost no overlap in tiers three and below. However, QuestMobile app data points to limited consumer overlap, adds the analyst. The consumer experience differs and the market is at an early stage, so Starbucks "can handle competitors," says Barish. He keeps a Buy rating on the shares with an $89 price target.
