Tilray price target lowered to $38 on Canadian regulatory delay at Compass Point
Compass Point analyst Rommel Dionisio lowered his revenue and earnings estimates for Tilray and cut his price target on the shares to $38 from $41 after the Canadian government issued a press release Friday that he said effectively delays the introduction of advanced forms of cannabis until at least mid-December 2019, at the earliest. Licensed cannabis companies must give Health Canada 60-days notice of their intent to sell products such as vapes, beverages, or edibles, but the government will not be accepting any such applications until Oct. 17, noted Dionisio, who keeps a Neutral rating on Tilray shares.

Canadian cannabis earnings could disappoint in Q2, says Vertical Group
Vertical Group analyst Gordon Johnson, who maintains a Sell rating on Tilray (TLRY), said in an emailed note that Health Canada provided statistics for April yesterday that shed light on the supply/demand backdrop in the Canadian cannabis market. Sell-in growth slowed from 11.5% month-over-month in March to 9.7% month-over-month in April and sell-through "collapsed" 39.4% month-over-month following a large increase in March, according to Johnson. He concludes from the data that end-demand is collapsing while inventory across all categories continues to bulge, which suggests to him that Canadian cannabis earnings "could be setting up for yet another disappointment" in Q2. Other publicly traded Canadian cannabis producers include Canopy Growth (CGC) and Aurora Cannabis (ACB).

Desjardins analyst John Chu initiated HEXO Corp (HEXO), Canopy Growth (CGC), and Aurora Cannabis (ACB) with a Buy rating and respective price targets of C$14, C$74, and C$16.50 as part of a broad research note, saying the "hype" around legalization of adult-use cannabis in Canada remains strong in spite of "underwhelming" early months of sales. The analyst attributes the challenges to ramp-up, logistical and distribution issues, but expects investors to consider the opportunity as a "global" one. Chu believes that "major" consumer packaged goods companies like Constellation (STZ), InBev (BUD), and Altria (MO), as well as retailers like Walgreens (WBA), CVS (CVS), and Rite Aid (RAD) should "help push cannabis and hemp into the mainstream."

The analyst notes that the announcement reflects the company's "unique position" to capitalize on a "strategic capital partner" role amid the cannabis industry's "race for growth" trend going forward. Catherwood adds that Green Peak is likely not alone in seeking strategic capital partners to expand cannabis operations in Michigan and Florida.

The analyst is also positive on the "funding sources available to Innovative Industrial Properties, and the management's ability to source/execute deals", both of which are evolving in a short period of time. With $144M convertible debt offering completed, Catherwood says Innovative Industrial Properties has even more capital to pursue acquisitions in spite of its existing $114M in liquidity.

The analyst states that while J.C Penney has made efforts to "restructure its merchandise assortment, close underperforming stores, and bolster its Omnichannel business, its operating results continue to deteriorate." Eade cites the company's margin deterioration coming from store closings, poor inventory management, and "steep discounting" intended to clear excess inventory. The analyst also sees J.C. Penney operating against "intense" competition from a wide range of retailers and suffering from weak mall traffic, while also facing a very expensive "arms race" to improve e-commerce capabilities.

J.C. Penney looks best positioned to gain share from Sears, says Credit Suisse
Looking at potential near-term same-store sales lift Softlines Retail peers could see from share gains based on proximity to Sears (SHLD) stores amid a possible liquidation, Credit Suisse analyst Michael Binetti says J.C. Penney (JCP) and Burlington Stores (BURL) seem best positioned to gain share in 2019 due to close proximity. And while J.C. Penney looks best positioned to gain share from Sears, the analyst thinks the recent stock run-up is "a short-term bounce." Binetti does not see this as sustainable customer acquisition for J.C. Penney given the increased risk of closing destabilized malls, limited visibility to an improved merchandise strategy, and leverage constraints to growth investing. Overall, the analyst believes that while there may be some near-term share benefit, a Sears liquidation could be a bigger tipping point that will accelerate closures of already weakening U.S. C&D malls.

Chinese tariffs negative for Schnitzer Steel, positive for Luxfer, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Philip Gibbs notes that the Trump administration announced the U.S. will be ratcheting up import tariffs to 25% from 10% on about $200B worth of Chinese goods. All else equal, Gibbs sees this as a modest negative for steel producers as key consumables remain sticky, and a relative neutral for ArcelorMittal (MT) given its global exposure. On steelmaking raw materials, the analyst sees this as a neutral for Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) and a negative for Schnitzer Steel (SCHN), with the latter in the heart of challenged non-ferrous export markets. He also views this largely as a neutral for distributors, with perhaps a modest positive of Worthington's (WOR) Cylinders segment. Clearer winners appear to be Global Brass and Copper (BRSS), Luxfer (LXFR), and Materion (MTRN), whereby it will be tougher for the Chinese to compete within the U.S. in its core businesses.
