Data points to Apple services re-acceleration, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty noted that third-party data from Sensor Tower indicates that Apple's June quarter App Store net revenue grew 17.5%, which she notes would mark the second straight quarter of accelerating App Store growth. If she uses the Sensor Tower App Store revenue figure of $3.85B and keeps all her other Apple Services forecasts unchanged, it would imply June quarter normalized Services revenue growth of 20.0%, which Huberty notes is 1.5% higher than consensus. She maintains an Overweight rating and $231 price target on Apple shares.

JPMorgan turns 'incrementally positive' on iPhone shipments, boosts Apple target
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee is turning "incrementally positive" on the volume outlook for iPhone shipments in 2020. Global supply chain and smartphone channel checks suggest that Apple is likely to "pull an additional lever" in the form of a refresh of the legacy iPhone SE/iPhone 8 model to address a much more "value" category relative to recent launches, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes the incrementally positive volume outlook for 2020 is likely to drive upgrades to consensus earnings expectations and positive sentiment for Apple shares. This would mark a "significant change" from downward revisions to near-term earnings over the last few months amid concerns around the impact of the U.S.-China trade war, Chatterjee believes. He increased his 2020 iPhone shipment outlook to 195M units and his fiscal 2020 and 2021 earnings per share estimates to $13.00 and $15.30 from $12.85 and $15.10, respectively. The analyst also boosted his price target for Apple to $239 from $233 and keeps an Overweight rating on the name.

Apple (AAPL) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Rosenblatt with analyst Jun Zhang citing his view that its fundamental will deteriorate over the next 6-12 months. 2. Rosenblatt sees Apple fundamentals deteriorating, downgrades to Sell
Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang downgraded Apple to Sell from Neutral, citing his view that its fundamental will deteriorate over the next 6-12 months. Zhang believes new iPhone sales will be disappointing, iPad sales growth will slow in the second half of 2019, and that service revenue growth will also decelerate. His analysis of retail data suggests overall iPhone sales were flat month-over-month in June and he expects major iPhone upgrades to be pushed out to the second half of 2020 given what are seen as limited upgrades for the new iPhone models in the fall and expectations of a 5G iPhone in 2020. While Zhang cut his rating to Sell, he does not see Apple as a stock to short, noting that the company has "plenty of cash and a meaningful stock buy back program," the analyst added. Zhang keeps a $150 price target on Apple shares, which are down $2.86, or 1.4%, to $201.37 in pre-market trading.

Fox investor day 'struck the right balance,' says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said he thinks Fox "struck the right balance" of visibility into the pricing power of its core networks and disciplined investment at its investor day meeting, adding that he continues to forecast an acceleration in FY20 growth due to the fact that nearly 40% of cable affiliate revenues up for renewal next fiscal year. Following the meeting, and the company's "strong" Q3 results, Swinburne raised his 2020 and 2021 EBITDA estimates for Fox and increased his price target on the stock to $44 from $42. He keeps an Overweight rating on Fox shares.

The analyst is keeping his Sector Perform rating however and maintains that his thesis on Fox Corp remains "somewhat cautious" because of its valuation relative to peers and some uncertainty about the company's capital allocation plans. Cahall says that unlike other more bullish sell-side analysts, he does not see the company's free cash flow per share tracking ahead of adjusted earnings, adding that its programming cost growth may also "remain elevated".

The company, which will focus on growing subscription revenue through its traditional and vMVPD distribution relationships in the near-term, will also see higher spending in the Television segment as Fox re-establishes production assets to pursue its entertainment content goals, said Morris. While he continues to view the company being well positioned among media peers, he thinks this positioning is reflected given the stock's current premium valuation.

Facebook ads in Explore could add $1B in revenue by 2021, says Morgan Stanley
After Facebook announced yesterday that it will introduce ads into Instagram's Explore tab for the first time, Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak said he sees a greater than $1B revenue opportunity by 2021 from this monetization, pointing to Explore's strong engagement and use. If Explore users grow to 600M and Explore monetizes at $2.00 per user by 2021, it would add about $1.2B, or about 1%, to 2021 revenue and from an EPS perspective this equates to about 2% upside to his current estimate using a conservative EBIT margin assumption, Nowak tells investors. While there is some level of investor concern surrounding the overall IT spend backdrop following a robust year of technology investments in calendar year 2018 and a "conglomerate discount," he thinks a mix of share gains in each of Dell's core markets, self-help levers., commodity tailwinds, and operational improvements will more than offset potential overhang from these trepidations. Pentagon JEDI contract to be 'defining moment' for cloud arms race, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives believes a "defining moment" for the cloud arms race will be the announcement of the winner of the long-awaited Pentagon JEDI contract, which is worth roughly $10B over the next decade in this landmark deal representing the cloud "grand prize" for Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT). The analyst notes that the timing on the announcement of a winner could be late August/early September with the ongoing Oracle (ORCL) lawsuit a wild card that could push the timeline out further depending on the outcome. While AWS/Amazon have been in pole position to win this deal over the last year, Ives continues to hear from his Beltway contacts that Microsoft has made "steady and impressive progress" and significantly narrowed the gap over the last six months with the odds of a win looking more like a realistic possibility.

Stifel says 'not much to be excited about' at Oracle beyond valuation

Spotify should be long-term winner as streaming music grows, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said that competition concerns and perceived label tensions have recently weighed on Spotify (SPOT) shares, but he reiterates his Overweight rating and $170 price target on the stock ahead of the company's upcoming Q1 report on Monday. He continues to see a significant runway for growth at Spotify given its leadership position in Android, the largest mobile ecosystem globally, as well as its higher engagement level relative to competitors such as Amazon Music (AMZN), the analyst tells investors. Streaming now accounts for 47% of global music industry revenue, per IFPI, and should surpass 50% of music industry revenues in 2019, noted Swinburne.

Occidental Petroleum (OXY) downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Devin McDermott saying he believes covering the 2020 dividend at current oil prices will require meaningful capital expenditure cuts, even though the Anadarko (APC) deal looks accretive to cash flow. 3. International Paper (IP) downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight at Stephens with analyst Mark Connelly saying RISI decided to cut the price of containerboard $10 "just three days after investors breathed a sigh of relief on encouraging supply-demand fundamentals." 4. Shopify (SHOP) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Roth Capital with analyst Darren Aftahi saying he remains positive on its underlying business prospects following the company's Unite conference and investor day but not on the stock's valuation, which has increased in the wake of the event. 5. Spotify (SPOT) downgraded to Underperform from In Line at Evercore ISI with analyst Kevin Rippey saying the recent rally in the stock "reflects an overly optimistic view" on the company's gross margin path and potential label negotiation outcomes. Spotify downgraded to Underperform at Evercore ISI
As previously reported, Evercore ISI analyst Kevin Rippey downgraded Spotify to Underperform from In Line and lowered his price target on the shares to $110 from $125, stating that the recent rally in the stock "reflects an overly optimistic view" on the company's gross margin path and potential label negotiation outcomes. He does not see a way for Spotify to generate the gross profits "demanded by Street estimates" in the medium-term, Rippey tells investors. The risk "is real" that publisher rates go higher per the existing Copyright Royalty Board ruling and SensorTower data shows that competition at the country level is far more intense than suggested by global aggregates, the analyst said.

AeroVironment can take 'material' share in $15B market, says William Blair
AeroVironment (AVAV) can take "material" market share from the $15B per year satellite manufacturing industry as a supplier to Softbank (SFTBY), William Blair analyst Louie DiPalma tells investors in a research note after meeting with the head of Softbank's Advanced Technology Division, Ryuji Wakikawa. The analyst points out that Softbank in January 2018 formed a joint venture with AeroVironment called HAPSMobile to develop high-altitude, solar-powered drones for the purpose of providing next-generation Internet of Things connectivity. HAPSMobile now represents nearly 20% of AeroVironment's sales, DiPalma says. He affirms an Outperform rating on AeroVironment shares.

Amazon.com should be bought ahead of Q2 results, says Barclays
Amazon should report revenue acceleration in Q2 and guide below for operating income, Barclays analyst Ross Sandler tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. The analyst would add to share positions into the results. In periods of accelerating growth, little else has mattered for Amazon shares historically, contends Sandler. He believes the combination of core retail picking up slightly earlier in Q2 and the extra 3%-4% to run-rate from next day shipping should take Amazon's growth rates up from Q1. The analyst keeps an Overweight rating on the shares with a $2,050 price target.

Amazon's Prime 1-day delivery to drive higher conversion rates, says Cowen

Blackledge, who raised his U.S. unit forecast to 12.6% y/y CAGR for 2019-2024 vs. ~9% prior, says he thinks Prime 1-day could drive an incremental $1B-$2B in revenue this year.

Amazon's free one-day delivery to drive significant revenue, says Loop Capital

In a research note to investors, the analyst says his firm analyzed the likely impacts on Amazon's top line growth following the introduction of free one-day delivery on over 10M items. Based on the analysis, Chukumba says he believes Amazon's move to free one-day delivery for Prime members will drive significant incremental revenue from three sources: incremental gross merchandise volume and the resulting revenue from additional consumers signing up for Prime memberships; incremental subscription fees from new Prime members; and incremental GMV and the resulting revenue from current Prime members buying more items.

Cowen analyst John Blackledge maintained an Outperform rating and $455 price target on Netflix ahead of the company's second quarter earnings on July 17. Additionally, the analyst says his firm's latest U.S. survey data suggests about 51% of Netflix users will watch "Stranger Things" Season 3 and many lapsed users may resubscribe, possibly driving gross additions at the end of Q2 and into the third quarter.

Netflix shares can rally 50% over next 12-18 months, says Piper Jaffray
Netflix has "significant room" to grow subscribers based on various ways of slicing the company's total addressable market, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst has historically used fixed broadband households as the Netflix addressable market, but he now believes this is "too limiting" given the potential for mobile-first and mobile-only users to adopt the service, especially outside of the U.S. When looking at current Netflix adoption as a percentage of internet or pay-TV households, Olson sees international "significantly" lagging domestic, suggesting potential for "dramatic" international growth in the coming years. While consensus estimates assume a high rate of ongoing international sub growth, "relatively more aggressive scenarios" have a realistic chance of playing out, Olson tells investors in a research note. Looking to 2021, the analyst believes investor anticipation around potential for greater than 20% penetration of Netflix across global internet households could lead to a ~50% move in the stock over the next 12-18 months. Olson keeps an Overweight rating on Netflix shares with a $440 price target. The stock closed yesterday up $1.90 to $362.20.

SunTrust expects in-line Q2 results for Netflix with upside to Q3

He sees his 2019 thesis in-tact and the firm's model is unchanged.
