Morgan Stanley cuts large cap banks view, double downgrades State Street, BNY
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Betsy Graseck double downgraded State Street (STT) and BNY Mellon (BK), each to Underweight from Overweight, and downgraded her industry view for large cap banks to In-Line from Attractive. The group is up 23% year-to-date, but the next 6-18 months look tougher as global GDP is slowing, inflation expectations are dimming and the Fed is expected to cut rates in 2019 and 2020, which will make it "much harder for bank stocks to deliver positive surprises in operating leverage," Graseck tells investors. While she is not double downgrading the group to Cautious, because credit remains strong, Graseck sees trust banks as most exposed to the yield curve ahead of what she foresees as "18 months of rate cuts," the analyst added. She lowered her price targets on a number of large cap banks and cut her target on State Street to $55 from $69 while dropping her target for BNY to $41 from $50.

Morgan Stanley still confident in Microsoft's Server & Tools division growth
Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss noted that a key debate about Microsoft (MSFT), which has been stoked by recent weakness in other on-premise infrastructure software vendors such as Cloudera (CLDR), Pivotal Software (PVTL) and VMware (VMW), remains the durability of growth in the company's On-premise Server Products and Tools. However, he maintains confidence in the durability of low-single digital growth in the Server Products & Tools division, citing share gains across the solution portfolio. However, Weiss does note that Microsoft faces face unusually tough comparison in the division in Q4 and Q1 of FY20, leaving him to forecast year-over-year declines in these two quarters. He maintains an Overweight rating and $145 price target on Microsoft shares.

Visa, MasterCard disruption threat from Libra 'fairly low,' says Morgan Stanley
After Facebook (FB) unveiled its cryptocurrency Libra yesterday, Morgan Stanley analysts led by Brian Nowak highlighted six "key questions" they still have about the impact on Facebook, commerce and the overall global banking and payments system from the social media giant's offering. The team, as previously stated, believe that Instagram commerce could be a greater than $4B annual opportunity for Facebook and even larger over the long term across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the core app. However, they also think costs may rise as they believe Facebook is likely going to have to fund rewards to drive Libra adoption. Libra's real-time aspect largely already exists in the banking system, except for in real-time cross-border payments, which is a challenge that Facebook could address, though it won't be alone there as JPMorgan (JPM) is also working on its own s Interbank Information Network blockchain, the team noted. The team believes Libra's threat of disruption to Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) is "fairly low" as the major networks have a significant scale advantage, low costs, mature fraud detection abilities and they are both also founding members and investors, Nowak and the analysts also noted.

The analyst assumed coverage with Buy ratings on AutoZone (AZO), BJ's Wholesale (BJ), Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) and Walmart (WMT). The U.S. consumer remains on "solid footing" amid low unemployment, rising wages, declining gas prices, manageable levels of debt, and elevated consumer confidence, Small tells investors in a research note. However, he points out that we are in the ninth year of the current economic expansion and "the possibility of a macroeconomic slowdown cannot be ignored." The analyst prefers retailers operating in "defensive sectors that are less susceptible to disruption by online competitors," namely auto parts, broadlines and home improvement retail. Broadcom bias higher on Symantec speculation, says SunTrust
SunTrust analyst William Stein kept his Buy rating and $307 price target on Broadcom (AVGO) but says his bias is turning higher on the company's valuation and consensus expectations following this week's press speculation regarding its interest in Symantec (SYMC). The analyst contends that the dip in the Broadcom stock price is comparable to last year's downturn when the company announced a deal to acquire CA Technologies and should also be bought, since the shares recovered quickly as the assets "become a relatively better performing part" of the company's business this year. Stein is also positive on Broadcom's "outstanding historical track record of value creation" from its investing decisions and expects its management to continue to make "intelligent capital allocation decisions."

Symantec sale well above $24 per share would be 'huge windfall,' says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst John DiFucci raised his price target for Symantec (SYMC) to $24 from $19 after Bloomberg reported last week that Broadcom (AVGO) is in advanced talks to acquire the company. There is some logic in Symantec as a takeout candidate, "though at what price is the primary question," DiFucci tells investors in a research note. Further, the analyst does not believe that Broadcom's acquisition of CA is a good compare to this potential transaction. DiFucci views the value of Symantec's potential future free cash flow at about $24 per share. Any sale at a "material premium" to $24 per share would be a "huge windfall" to shareholders, says the analyst.

Wedbush sees $26-$28 per share as 'sweet spot' for Symantec, Broadcom deal
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes that with more media reports discussing Broadcom (AVGO) and Symantec (SYMC) walking down the aisle on the near-term horizon, he continues to believe given the price points being discussed and rationale behind such a deal that the chances of another bidder is unlikely. With the financing seemingly secured from the Broadcom side, the analyst believes it is all about synergies and Broadcom should be able to find between $1.3B-$1.5B of annual cost synergies from "the bloated" Symantec structure with the enterprise segment being the laser focus. From a valuation basis, Ives believes $26-$28 per share would be the "sweet spot" range a deal likely gets consummated and a valuation that many investors would ultimately approve. He has a Neutral rating and $19 price target on Symantec's shares.

Broadcom reported deal talks likely to raise questions, says Morgan Stanley
After Bloomberg and the Financial Times reported that Broadcom (AVGO) is in advanced talks to buy Symantec (SYMC), Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach said he thinks such a potential deal would be less surprising than the company's prior acquisition of CA, but there will likely be many questions about it given the deterioration in Symantec's business. He estimates such a potential deal could be approximately 10% accretive at a typical M&A premium and with a 10% reduction in operating expenses. Given that he thinks questions about Broadcom's strategy could linger, Hettenbach keeps an Equal Weight rating on the shares.

DFAST results encourgaing for Wells Fargo, says UBS
UBS analyst Saul Martinez said the DFAST results from the Federal Reserve, reported after the close on Friday, were most encouraging for "those who didn't fare as well last year," like Wells Fargo (WFC). He thinks Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS) and State Street (STT) look like they have room to reach his forecasted capital returns and also said lower stressed losses at Citi (C) and JPMorgan (JPM) could suggest that the current SCB proposal may not lead to materially higher minimum capital requirements, added Martinez. However, he thinks there could be some downside to his capital return estimates for Capital One (COF), which he notes have been above consensus.

The analyst also points to Cloudera's higher churn, and increased competitiveness from Amazon's (AMZN) AWS, Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure, and Google's (GOOGL) GCP impacting the quarter. Jaluria cuts his FY21 EPS view to (19c) from 22c but maintains his Buy rating on Cloudera, citing his "glimmer of hope" that the company can reaccelerate growth with CDP or that either a private equity firm or IBM (IBM) would acquire it given the reduced 1.8-times enterprise value to expected 2020 revenue valuation.

While 2019 is "shaping up to be a tough year for eBrokers' stocks," Cyprys said he sees Charles Schwab (SCHW) as best positioned for an upside surprise given what he views as "overly bearish" investor sentiment.
