Global PC shipments grew 1.5% in Q2, Gartner says

After two quarters of decline, the worldwide PC market grew 1.5% in the second quarter of 2019, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. Shipments totaled 63 million units in the second quarter of 2019, up from 62 million units in the second quarter of 2018. "Worldwide PC shipments growth was driven by demand from the Windows 10 refresh in the business market in the second quarter of 2019. Desktop PC growth was strong, which offset a decline in mobile PC shipments," said Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner. The ongoing trade dispute - and potential imposition of tariffs - adds uncertainty to the near-term outlook for PC demand. "While the U.S.-China trade war did not impact the PC market in the second quarter of 2019, the next phase of tariffs could have significant impact. Most laptops and tablets are currently manufactured in China and sales of these devices in the U.S. could face significant price increases if the punitive tariffs are imposed and vendors do not take quick action to respond," said Kitagawa. The top three vendors - Lenovo (LNVGY), HP Inc. (HPQ) and Dell (DELL) - accounted for 64.1% of global PC shipments in the second quarter of 2019, compared with 60.7% of shipments in the second quarter of 2018. These top three vendors continued to gain share in the PC market taking advantage of economies of scale. Intel's (INTC) CPU supply shortage in the first half of the year accelerated this trend. Other companies in the PC space include Apple (AAPL), Micron (MU), Western Digital (WDC), and Seagate (STX).

Gartner downgraded to Market Perform at BMO Capital on disappointing guidance
As previously reported, BMO Capital analyst Jeffrey Silber downgraded Gartner to Market Perform from Outperform and lowered his price target to $142 from $151. The analyst notes that the company's Q4 earnings miss should also make it difficult to achieve the management's reiterated outlook for double-digit Global Business Sales contract value growth. Silber adds that Gartner stock continues to trade at a "sizable premium on virtually all metrics", while its near term upside looks limited.

Outperform
HP Inc.'s current valuation more than discounts headwinds, says Evercore ISI
Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani started HP Inc. with an Outperform rating and $23 price target, saying he sees the current valuation more than discounting ongoing headwinds. In a research note to investors, Daryanani says he sees an upside bias on the stock from a quicker supplies recovery and more resilient free cash flow generation. The analyst thinks HP has an "impressive" management team that has executed well in the last several years and thinks it is prudent to be positively biased given the 10%+ free cash flow yield and the potential for supplies revenues to stabilized in the second half of 2019.

Dell Technologies has $10+ EPS potential longer term, says Evercore ISI
Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani started Dell Technologies (DELL) with an Outperform rating and $75 price target. In a research note to investors, Daryanani cited the company's comprehensive enterprise IT portfolio spanning from personal systems and data center solutions to cloud and infrastructure virtualization software through the company's ~80% ownership stake in VMWare (VMW) in addition to the stock's attractive valuation for the Outperform rating. While there is some level of investor concern surrounding the overall IT spend backdrop following a robust year of technology investments in calendar year 2018 and a "conglomerate discount," he thinks a mix of share gains in each of Dell's core markets, self-help levers., commodity tailwinds, and operational improvements will more than offset potential overhang from these trepidations. Longer term, the analyst sees $10+ EPS potential, which in an upside scenario, drives Dell stock higher toward the $75+ level.

JPMorgan turns 'incrementally positive' on iPhone shipments, boosts Apple target
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee is turning "incrementally positive" on the volume outlook for iPhone shipments in 2020. Global supply chain and smartphone channel checks suggest that Apple is likely to "pull an additional lever" in the form of a refresh of the legacy iPhone SE/iPhone 8 model to address a much more "value" category relative to recent launches, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes the incrementally positive volume outlook for 2020 is likely to drive upgrades to consensus earnings expectations and positive sentiment for Apple shares. This would mark a "significant change" from downward revisions to near-term earnings over the last few months amid concerns around the impact of the U.S.-China trade war, Chatterjee believes. He increased his 2020 iPhone shipment outlook to 195M units and his fiscal 2020 and 2021 earnings per share estimates to $13.00 and $15.30 from $12.85 and $15.10, respectively. The analyst also boosted his price target for Apple to $239 from $233 and keeps an Overweight rating on the name.

Data points to Apple services re-acceleration, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty noted that third-party data from Sensor Tower indicates that Apple's June quarter App Store net revenue grew 17.5%, which she notes would mark the second straight quarter of accelerating App Store growth. If she uses the Sensor Tower App Store revenue figure of $3.85B and keeps all her other Apple Services forecasts unchanged, it would imply June quarter normalized Services revenue growth of 20.0%, which Huberty notes is 1.5% higher than consensus. She maintains an Overweight rating and $231 price target on Apple shares.

Morgan Stanley ups PayPal price target, but sees Apple Pay narrowing volume gap
Morgan Stanley's analyst team, led by James Faucette, Katy Huberty, Betsy Graseck and Brian Nowak, introduced a new U.S. digital wallet model with forecasts out to 2027 that anticipates Apple Pay (AAPL) will likely narrow the volume gap with PayPal (PYPL) largely because of their expectation that Apple Pay will sustain its offline growth. However, they expect that PayPal's revenue generation will remain "substantially greater" than Apple Pay's due to the much higher take rates associated with online transactions and think that PayPal's volume lead could persist if the company can successfully address technology and user interface issues for offline. Faucette raised his price target on PayPal shares to $129 from $114 citing a combination of increased confidence in EPS growth and what he sees as the unexploited potential for PayPal to grow offline acceptance. In terms of Square's (SQ) Cash App, the team think it can grow volumes, but given the losses the company seems willing to endure they see little incremental value from it. Morgan Stanley has Overweight ratings on PayPal and Apple and an Equal Weight rating on Square.

DRAM, NAND monthly contract pricing declines continue in June, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Weston Twigg says that inSpectrum released its June monthly memory contract pricing, with price declines continuing. DRAM contract pricing for 8Gb DDR4 was down 7.4% month over month and down 26.5% quarter over quarter, he notes, adding that he anticipates DRAM price declines to continue through 2019, though the rate of decline will likely decelerate further in the second half of the year. Meanwhile, Twigg points out that NAND contract pricing for 128Gb TLC was down 3.3% month over month and down 11.5% quarter over quarter, and expects NAND pricing to stabilize in the second half of the year as year over year bit supply should drop and demand is likely to improve. Despite near-term demand headwinds in both DRAM and NAND, he continues to anticipate meaningful long-term growth as new demand drivers, such as 5G, hyperscale, and edge/endpoint devices, continue to expand. Further, Twigg views the DRAM market as likely healthier and more profitable than NAND over the long run given just three main producers - Micron (MU), Samsung (SSNLF), and SK Hynix -, strong long-term demand drivers, and rational capacity expansion.

Western Digital second half estimates raised at Longbow
Longbow analyst Nikolay Todorov noted that InSpectrum reported that Q2 NAND contract prices declined 12% quarter-over-quarter, in-line with the forecast for a low double-digit decline in his survey done in early June. However, given recent NAND supply reductions, he has raised his NAND price forecasts for the second half of the calendar year and consequently raised his estimates for Western Digital. Given the higher estimates, Todorov increased his price target on Western Digital shares to $55 from $49 and keeps a Buy rating on the stock.

Western Digital should be bought at current levels, says Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Sidney Ho lowered his price target for Western Digital (WDC) to $55 from $60 after trimming his estimates to reflect NAND pricing. The analyst, however, still favors Western Digital over Seagate (STX). He does not expect the Huawei ban and China tariffs to have a significant direct impact on Western Digital, but he adds that they create more uncertainties about end-demand growth. Further, recent comments from several companies in the supply chain seem to suggest that the recovery for enterprise spending may have slipped by one-to-two quarters, Ho tells investors in a research note. As a result, he trimmed his estimates, primarily to reflect lower NAND pricing assumptions. The analyst, however, believes the weakness of Western Digital shares, down 27% since the beginning of May, is likely overdone. Ho recommends investors buy the shares at these levels and keeps a Buy rating on the name.
