Fly Intel: What to watch in first round of big bank earnings reports

Citigroup (C) is scheduled to report quarterly results before the open on July 15, while JPMorgan (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are expected to report on July 16. What to watch for: 1. OUTLOOKS: During the company's last earnings call, JPMorgan said it sees fiscal year 2019 NII $58B-plus, market dependent, fiscal year 2019 adjusted expense to be less than $66B and 2019 net charge-offs less than $5.5B. Meanwhile, Wells Fargo CFO John Shrewsberry said that if deposit repricing continues to be slower than expected but has an upward trajectory, the net interest income could be closer to the high-end of the guidance range of down 2%-5%. Wells Fargo management said the company is on track to meet expense guidance of $52M-$53M and is set to hire 1,300 people with a focus on compliance. The company is also "redoubling" its efforts to satisfy regulators. 2. DIVIDEND INCREASE, SHARE REPURCHASE: Late last month, JPMorgan announced that the Federal Reserve Board did not object to the bank's capital plan under the recently concluded 2019 comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review. JPMorgan Chase's Board of Directors intends to increase the quarterly common stock dividend to 90c per share, up from the current 80c per share, effective the third quarter, and has authorized gross common equity repurchases of up to $29.4B between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020 under a new common equity repurchase program. Meanwhile, Wells Fargo expects to increase its third quarter 2019 common stock dividend to 51c per share from 45c per share, and its planning common stock repurchases of up to $23.1B for the four-quarter period. Additionally, Citi said its quarterly common stock dividend will increase from 45c to 51c per share, subject to quarterly approval by Citi's Board of Directors. The bank also announced a common stock repurchase program of up to $17.1B during the four quarters starting in the third quarter. 3. BLOCKCHAIN: JPMorgan and Microsoft (MSFT) announced back in May they signed a memorandum of understanding to form a strategic partnership to accelerate the adoption of enterprise blockchain. Through this partnership, Quorum, developed by JPMorgan, will become the first distributed ledger platform available through Azure Blockchain Service, enabling JPMorgan and Microsoft customers to build and scale blockchain networks in the cloud. 4. HEALTHCARE JV: Haven, the health joint venture formed last year by Amazon (AMZN), Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) and JPMorgan, has lost COO Jack Stoddard just nine months into his new role, CNBC's Christina Farr reported in May. Stoddard confirmed his departure to CNBC, saying he left the company for personal reasons. 5. LEGAL COSTS: Wells Fargo said in a regulatory filing that the high end of the range of reasonably possible potential losses in excess of the company's accrual for probable and estimable losses was approximately $3.1B as of March 31, 2019. The increase in the high end of the range from December 31, 2018, was due to a variety of matters, Wells said. Additionally, the bank said in the filing that it is reviewing disclosures made to debit card customers, and that it may have to refund some debit card fees.

Fly Intel: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Citi (C) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst Richard Ramsden saying he sees a "realistic path" to a 13% return on tangible common equity in 2020 for Citi, or 100 basis points ahead of market expectations, which he notes is not contingent on either higher interest rates or strengthening global growth trends. 2. Comcast (CMCSA) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Guggenheim with analyst Mike McCormack saying the company's successful pivot from primarily a video distributor to a connectivity company "has been fairly smooth." 3. Zynga (ZNGA) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Stephens with analyst Jeff Cohen saying the continued acceleration of recent acquisitions and the fact that Social Casino could be poised for a second half re-acceleration give him additional confidence in Zynga's live service portfolio. 4. Penumbra (PEN) upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at JPMorgan with analyst Robert Marcus saying the Street is overly focused on competitive entrants to the stroke aspiration market. 5. Cypress Semiconductor (CY) upgraded to Equal Weight from Underweight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Craig Hettenbach citing press reports indicating that the company is exploring strategic options. DFAST results encourgaing for Wells Fargo, says UBS
UBS analyst Saul Martinez said the DFAST results from the Federal Reserve, reported after the close on Friday, were most encouraging for "those who didn't fare as well last year," like Wells Fargo (WFC). He thinks Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS) and State Street (STT) look like they have room to reach his forecasted capital returns and also said lower stressed losses at Citi (C) and JPMorgan (JPM) could suggest that the current SCB proposal may not lead to materially higher minimum capital requirements, added Martinez. However, he thinks there could be some downside to his capital return estimates for Capital One (COF), which he notes have been above consensus.

Citi upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Richard Ramsden upgraded Citi to Buy from Neutral and raised his price target for the shares to $77 from $71. The stock closed yesterday down 9c to $63.71. Ramsden sees a "realistic path" to a 13% return on tangible common equity in 2020 for Citi, or 100 basis points ahead of market expectations, which he notes is not contingent on either higher interest rates or strengthening global growth trends. While there is a risk that Citi may back away from its 13.5%-plus ROTCE target, neither consensus expectations for 2020 or the current valuation discount achieving the target, Ramsden tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes the market is "overly pessimistic" on Citi's revenue growth inflection, targeted expense savings, and outlook for credit costs. As a result, he sees 21% upside potential from current share levels.

Wells Fargo says consensus EPS forecasts for Citi too low
After meeting with the CEO and CFO of Citi, Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo noted that both executives repeated expectations that Citi should achieve its ROTCE targets. Those targets imply that 2020 consensus EPS is too low by about 15%, contends Mayo, who added that the executives also pointed to a turn in Asia, from which the bank stands to benefit. Mayo maintains an Outperform rating on Citi with a $90 price target.

Visa, MasterCard disruption threat from Libra 'fairly low,' says Morgan Stanley
After Facebook (FB) unveiled its cryptocurrency Libra yesterday, Morgan Stanley analysts led by Brian Nowak highlighted six "key questions" they still have about the impact on Facebook, commerce and the overall global banking and payments system from the social media giant's offering. The team, as previously stated, believe that Instagram commerce could be a greater than $4B annual opportunity for Facebook and even larger over the long term across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the core app. However, they also think costs may rise as they believe Facebook is likely going to have to fund rewards to drive Libra adoption. Libra's real-time aspect largely already exists in the banking system, except for in real-time cross-border payments, which is a challenge that Facebook could address, though it won't be alone there as JPMorgan (JPM) is also working on its own s Interbank Information Network blockchain, the team noted. The team believes Libra's threat of disruption to Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) is "fairly low" as the major networks have a significant scale advantage, low costs, mature fraud detection abilities and they are both also founding members and investors, Nowak and the analysts also noted.

Worldpay downgraded to Sector Weight after Fiserv deal at KeyBanc
As previously reported, KeyBanc analyst Josh Beck downgraded Worldpay (WP) to Sector Weight from Overweight after the company and FIS (FIS) announced a deal, quickly adding another mega-deal in the wake of Fiserv (FISV)-First Data (FDC) and Global Payments (GPN)-Heartland Payment Systems. The analyst thinks this transaction is likely to expand the M&A discussion around Global Payments, TSYS (TSS), EVO Payments (EVOP), and i3 Verticals (IIIV) and sees paths to accretion should management teams further endorse a scale strategy. Future processing competition could increase among Global Payments, TSYS, First Data, and JPMorgan (JPM), but it remains too early to gauge, he contends.

Jefferies downgrades Financials to Underweight on 'shocking' Fed meeting
Jefferies analyst Steven DeSanctis is "very surprised" by last week's Federal Reserve's decision taking rate hikes completely off table in 2019. The "shocking" Fed meeting means lower rates for longer, which is not good for Financials, DeSanctis tells investors in a research note. A "lack of catalysts and weaker earnings growth" going forward for the entire sector, not just banks, means an Underweight rating on the space makes sense, says the analyst. As such, he downgraded his rating on the Financial sector to Underweight from Market Weight. Publicly traded companies in the space include Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), Goldman Sachs (GS), JPMorgan (JPM), Morgan Stanley (MS), U.S. Bancorp (USB) and Wells Fargo (WFC).

Morgan Stanley upgrade, Wells downgrade among Citi's bank changes
Citi analyst Keith Horowitz made seven rating changes in the U.S. Banks space after updating his estimates and target prices for a new base case rate forecast that more closely reflects the forward curve. This includes two interest rate cuts in 2019 and 2020. The analyst's terminal yield curve assumptions to Fed Funds is 1.75%. The lower rate assumptions led him to lower his normal return on tangible equity estimates ~100 basis points on average. Following these changes, Horowitz upgraded Morgan Stanley (MS) to Buy from Neutral), downgraded Comerica (CMA), Northern Trust (NTRS), and M&T Bank (MTB) to Sell from Neutral, and downgraded Wells Fargo (WFC), Citizens Financial (CFG), and Fifth Third (FITB) to Neutral from Buy.

Morgan Stanley still confident in Microsoft's Server & Tools division growth
Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss noted that a key debate about Microsoft (MSFT), which has been stoked by recent weakness in other on-premise infrastructure software vendors such as Cloudera (CLDR), Pivotal Software (PVTL) and VMware (VMW), remains the durability of growth in the company's On-premise Server Products and Tools. However, he maintains confidence in the durability of low-single digital growth in the Server Products & Tools division, citing share gains across the solution portfolio. However, Weiss does note that Microsoft faces face unusually tough comparison in the division in Q4 and Q1 of FY20, leaving him to forecast year-over-year declines in these two quarters. He maintains an Overweight rating and $145 price target on Microsoft shares.

Disney battle with Netflix in OTT to be 'expensive', says Needham

The analyst raises her FY20 revenue estimates to $83.4B from $76.6B to account for the contribution of the new Fox assets, but also lowers her EPS view by 15c to $6.39 to reflect the higher investments tied to Disney's OTT service, as the management will have to incur higher TV production costs due to digital platform competition coming from "Netflix, Hulu, Amazon (AMZN) Video, etc."

Stifel analyst Mark Astrachan noted that Costco (COST) reported "solid" June comparable sales growth of 5.1% total and 5.3% for its U.S. core business, which were both a bit better than consensus forecasts. He reads the results as an indication that Costco can coexist with large hardline competitors like Walmart (WMT) while having limited cannibalization from Amazon (AMZN), Astrachan tells investors. He also continues to view it as "reasonable" that Costco could declare a special dividend in the next few quarters given its "sizable and increasing" cash balance. Amazon.com should be bought ahead of Q2 results, says Barclays
Amazon should report revenue acceleration in Q2 and guide below for operating income, Barclays analyst Ross Sandler tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. The analyst would add to share positions into the results. In periods of accelerating growth, little else has mattered for Amazon shares historically, contends Sandler. He believes the combination of core retail picking up slightly earlier in Q2 and the extra 3%-4% to run-rate from next day shipping should take Amazon's growth rates up from Q1. Axalta Coating under pressure to deliver on M&A, says Citi
Citi analyst P.J. Juvekar said Axalta is under increased pressure "to deliver on M&A now or risk its credibility" after the company announced it is exploring strategic options again after going through the same process in 2017. Previously the company had M&A negotiations with AkzoNobel (AKZOY) and briefly with Nippon Paints, though neither reached a deal, and this time it could approach new players like Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), which already owns roughly 10% of the company, or Sherwin-Williams (SHW), contends Juvekar. Axalta does not have architectural paint, which trades at high multiples compared to industrial paint, and he thinks a multiple range of 12x-13x, equating to a stock price in the mid-to-high $30 range, is possible in a deal, though "there is no guarantee that a deal would happen," Juvekar stated in a note to investor before the open.

Morgan Stanley says 13F a 'clear signal' of value Buffett sees in financials
Following the release last night of 13F filings detailing the holdings of large investors, including Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), Morgan Stanley analyst Kai Pan noted that the filing from Warren Buffett's Berkshire revealed increased stakes in Bank of America (BAC), U.S. Bancorp (USB) and Goldman Sachs (GS) along with new stakes in JPMorgan (JPM), PNC Financial (PNC) and Travelers (TRV). The analyst sees these investments, along with the fact that Berkshire's s financial holdings stood at 46% of its overall $203B equity portfolio as of quarter end, as a "clear signal" of the value that Buffett sees in financials, Pan tells investors. He adds that he views Buffett's new stake in Oracle (ORCL) as another "notable" new purchase.

PG&E deal talks report could drive renewed interest, says BofA/Merrill
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith noted that SparkSpread reported that Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BRK.A) was in talks to acquire bankrupt PG&E (PCG). However, CNBC subsequently reported that Berkshire had no interest, citing direct conversations with Warren Buffett, and a spokesperson also noted the company is not in talks with PG&E, noted the analyst. Still, he thinks headlines regarding the Berkshire interest could help drive renewed interest in PG&E from other large-cap entities, adding that "for all of the same reasons why we see credibility to a potential Berkshire bid, much of the same applies to any other large buyer." Dumoulin-Smith keeps No Rating on PG&E shares given ongoing Chapter 11 proceedings.

Berkshire shares are undervalued on look-through earnings, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Sarah DeWitt views Berkshire Hathaway as one of the best value plays in her coverage group. Although the stock appears more expensive than the S&P 500 at 20 times 2019 estimated earnings, reported earnings ignore the company's "massive" equity portfolio of nearly $200B, DeWitt tells investors in a research note. The analyst thinks a better measure is look-through earnings, which she notes is the one Warren Buffett endorses and includes Berkshire's share of retained earnings of major investees that are not reflected in GAAP earnings. On this basis, Berkshire trades at 13.6 times estimated 2019 look-through earnings, near the all-time historical low for price-to-look-through earnings ratio and a significant discount to the S&P 500 at 16 times, the analyst says. She thinks Berkshire should trade at least in line with the historical median on look-through earnings of 17 times, which would imply 25% upside. The analyst keeps Overweight rating on both of Berkshire's share classes. DeWitt has a $375,000 price target for the class A shares (BRK.A) and $250 target for the class B shares (BRK.B).
