Netflix says speculation about selling advertising 'false'

Netflix said in its quarterly investor letter: "Over the next 12 months, Disney, Apple, WarnerMedia, NBCU and others are joining Hulu, Amazon, BBC, Hotstar, YouTube, Netflix, and many others in offering streaming entertainment. The competition for winning consumers' relaxation time is fierce for all companies and great for consumers. The innovation of streaming services is also drawing consumers to shift more and more from linear television to streaming entertainment. If you watch Our Planet on a new TV with Dolby Vision or HDR10, you will see why: the quality of streaming television is spectacular. In the US, our most developed market, we still only earn about 10% of consumers' television time, and less of their mobile screen time, so we have much room for growth. We, like HBO, are advertising free. That remains a deep part of our brand proposition; when you read speculation that we are moving into selling advertising, be confident that this is false. We believe we will have a more valuable business in the long term by staying out of competing for ad revenue and instead entirely focusing on competing for viewer satisfaction."

Key for Netflix earnings is International subscriber guidance, says Lynx
Lynx Equity Strategies analysts KC Rajkumar and Jahanara Nissar said ahead of Netflix's Q2 earnings that the key for the company's earnings report is the Q3 International subscriber guidance, noting that investors are looking for 5.5M or better for the stock to go higher, and "anything less may result in a flattish stock performance over the next week." The analysts suggest to "wait this one out."

Netflix price increases support healthy ARPU growth, says Morgan Stanley
In a preview of the upcoming earnings report from Netflix, Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said he expects the company to again deliver record net additions in FY19 and near double digit ARPU growth supported by its recent price increases. He remains in-line with guidance for 300,000 U.S. paid net adds and 4.7M international net adds in Q2 and raised his Q3 revenue and earnings estimates for more international price increases than he'd previously expected. Swinburne keeps an Overweight rating and $450 price target on Netflix shares.

KeyBanc expects Netflix to report in-line results, guidance
Ahead of Netflix's quarterly results, KeyBanc analyst Andy Hargreaves expects modest upside to Q2 guidance and Q3 subscriber guidance that is largely in line with current sell-side expectations. While the analyst sees the potential for some upside to this expectation, he maintains the magnitude of upside is likely to be limited, which is likely to prevent material near-term stock appreciation. Hargreaves has a Sector Weight rating on the shares.

Netflix app download trends weakened 'dramatically' in Q2, say Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Douglas Mitchelson tells investors in a research note that Netflix app download trends weakened dramatically in the second quarter, with global downloads up 8% year-over-year vs. an increase of 24% y/y in the first quarter, driven by price increases and was anticipated in guidance. Mitchelson, who maintains an Outperform rating, $450 price target and second quarter estimates, notes downside risk and little upside potential for Q2 international net adds.

Netflix is widening its 'competitive moat', says UBS
UBS analyst Eric Sheridan kept his Buy rating and $420 price target on Netflix (NFLX), saying he sees the company's competitive moat growing in strength. The analyst notes that while the launch of Disney+ (DIS) at the end of this year remains an unknown, the pricing power and content success of Netflix have resulted in "only modest" churn dynamics and "broad-based" add trends.

Disney's 'Toy Story 4' could generate $1B-$1.15B, says BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich maintained a Buy rating and $168 price target on Disney shares following the a "healthy" opening weekend at the box office for "Toy Story 4," which earned $118M domestically, an almost 7% increase on the opening weekend results for "Toy Story 3." The analyst believes "Toy Story 4" could generate between $1-$1.15bn in ultimate global box office for Disney, which could produce 23c in EPS for Disney over the life of the film. She added that the film could have favorable implications as a driver for the new Disney+ service.

Disney battle with Netflix in OTT to be 'expensive', says Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin keeps her Hold rating on Disney (DIS), saying that while the valuation on the stock has gapped up based on investor expectations of it "winning" the OTT battle, she believes that it will take longer for the company to "displace" Netflix (NFLX) and beat the other competitors in the space. The analyst raises her FY20 revenue estimates to $83.4B from $76.6B to account for the contribution of the new Fox assets, but also lowers her EPS view by 15c to $6.39 to reflect the higher investments tied to Disney's OTT service, as the management will have to incur higher TV production costs due to digital platform competition coming from "Netflix, Hulu, Amazon (AMZN) Video, etc."

AMC Entertainment price target lowered to $11 from $15 at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould lowered his price target on AMC Entertainment (AMC) to $11 and kept his Hold rating to reflect the lower box office numbers in Q2. The analyst states that the stock was particularly hard hit by the company's higher leverage, with the adoption of new lease accounting rules suggesting that its debt levels doubled to $10B in the latest quarter. Gould also contends that the selloff may be overdone with much easier comparisons expected in Q3, though Q4 will bring added pressure from Disney's (DIS) launch of its OTT service and 2020 will be challenged by Disney's push out of Avatar sequel release.

Apple price target raised to $187 from $171 at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall raised his price target on Apple shares to $187 from $171 to reflect a higher S&P 500 P/E multiple and an unchanged 10% discount to that multiple. However, Hall also noted that App Store data from Sensor Tower suggests a material slowdown in revenues in May and June, adding that his current estimate for the June quarter is for 15.7% year-over-year Services growth and for 15.1% year-over-year Services growth in the September quarter. Data points to Apple services re-acceleration, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty noted that third-party data from Sensor Tower indicates that Apple's June quarter App Store net revenue grew 17.5%, which she notes would mark the second straight quarter of accelerating App Store growth. If she uses the Sensor Tower App Store revenue figure of $3.85B and keeps all her other Apple Services forecasts unchanged, it would imply June quarter normalized Services revenue growth of 20.0%, which Huberty notes is 1.5% higher than consensus. She maintains an Overweight rating and $231 price target on Apple shares.

Apple iPhone revenue headwinds are abating, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee says supplier revenue trends in his firm's iPhone Supplier Tracker continue to indicate abating iPhone headwinds despite recent China concerns. On a year-over-year basis, aggregate revenues rose for the fourth consecutive month, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. He believes the monthly supplier revenue trends support his belief that iPhone revenue headwinds are abating despite concerns driven by the uncertainty around the trade stand-off.

Morgan Stanley ups PayPal price target, but sees Apple Pay narrowing volume gap
Morgan Stanley's analyst team, led by James Faucette, Katy Huberty, Betsy Graseck and Brian Nowak, introduced a new U.S. digital wallet model with forecasts out to 2027 that anticipates Apple Pay (AAPL) will likely narrow the volume gap with PayPal (PYPL) largely because of their expectation that Apple Pay will sustain its offline growth. However, they expect that PayPal's revenue generation will remain "substantially greater" than Apple Pay's due to the much higher take rates associated with online transactions and think that PayPal's volume lead could persist if the company can successfully address technology and user interface issues for offline. Faucette raised his price target on PayPal shares to $129 from $114 citing a combination of increased confidence in EPS growth and what he sees as the unexploited potential for PayPal to grow offline acceptance. In terms of Square's (SQ) Cash App, the team think it can grow volumes, but given the losses the company seems willing to endure they see little incremental value from it. Morgan Stanley has Overweight ratings on PayPal and Apple and an Equal Weight rating on Square.

Comcast upgraded to Conviction Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Brett Feldman upgraded Comcast to Buy from Neutral and added the shares to his firm's Conviction List. He also boosted his price target for the stock to $54 from $44. Feldman estimates Comcast will sustain "strong growth" over next three years with annual earnings growth of 11%, free cash flow per share of 12% and dividends of 15%, driven by "healthy fundamentals across its key businesses." He expects cable margins will grow 100 basis points annually through 2024, NBC Universal revenue will grow annually at 4% through 2024, and that increasing video penetration, recent price increases and moderating increases in sports programming costs position Sky for a "material ramp" in EBITDA in the second half of 2019. Further, he views Comcast's current valuation as attractive.

JPMorgan downgrades BCE to Neutral, Rogers to Underweight
JPMorgan analyst Richard Choe downgraded BCE (BCE) to Neutral from Overweight and Rogers Communications (RCI) to Underweight from Neutral. The analyst cut his price target for BCE to C$60 from C$63 and for Rogers to C$69 from C$71. Choe also reduced his price target for Neutral-rated Telus (TU) to C$49 from $C51. Rogers on June 12 announced the launch of its unlimited plan offering for its premium postpaid brand and BCE as well as Telus quickly followed, Choe tells investors in a research note. The analyst says he's starting to see a slowdown in subscriber growth. In addition, potential average revenue per user pressure from the migration to unlimited plans creates risk to the premium multiples the Canadian Communications companies have traded at versus U.S. and global peers, contends the analyst. He recommends stepping away from Canadian carriers at this level and prefers AT&T (T) and Comcast (CMCSA) in the U.S.

Citi downgrades Verizon to Neutral on rising long-term industry risks
Citi analyst Michael Rollins downgraded Verizon Communications (VZ) to Neutral from Buy with an unchanged price target of $62. Rising long-term industry risks and the stock's current valuation premium are likely to limit returns over the next 12-months, Rollins tells investors in a research note. He believes long-term risks are rising for industry pricing and margins given the "widening array of possible outcomes" for the proposed merger of T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S). Rollins thinks national wireless firms that take more aggressive steps to shape their long-term strategic and competitive position in the industry have a better chance of creating value over the next 12-months. As such, he maintains Buy ratings on T-Mobile, AT&T (T), Telephone and Data (TDS) and U.S. Cellular (USM).

In a research note to investors, Sutton says views this move this as the removal of the largest headwind facing the stock and believes investors will be able to fully recognize the remaining value of the software and advertising segments, which are reflected in his updated FY20 estimate of $100M.
