Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.
'THE LION KING' OFF TO STRONG START: Disney's (DIS) live-action adaptation of "The Lion King," which is opening in more than 4,700 theaters, has already earned $23M in Thursday night previews, and is looking to domestically gross in the range of $175M-$210M. Box Office Mojo is forecasting $190M, although it added that, "given how so many films have performed lately, we wouldn't be a bit surprised if it came up a bit short." Last weekend "The Lion King" opened in China, where it earned $54M, and in all international markets it has earned over $94M to date.
'SPIDER-MAN,' 'TOY STORY 4' TO ROUND OUT TOP THREE: Sony's (SNE) superhero sequel "Spider-Man: Far From Home," starring Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal, is in its third weekend at theaters, and is anticipated to drop over 50% to about $22M domestically for the weekend, putting it in second place. Disney's "Toy Story 4," in its fifth weekend at theaters, is looking to add $12M-$13M to its totals, putting its domestic gross around $375M.
