AMD second half of 2019 estimates look optimistic, says Mizuho
Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh believes AMD's (AMD) EPYC 2 benchmarks "show significant potential" versus Intel's (INTC) 14nm Cascale Lake with a number of key partners out of the gate. However, the analyst thinks near-term expectations for AMD are optimistic. While AMD is looking for a big Q4 ramp, potential pricing, share and capacity challenges could be headwinds to meeting consensus estimates in the second half of 2019, Rakesh tells investors in a research note. As such, the analyst keeps a Neutral rating on AMD with a $36 price target. The stock closed Friday up 27c to $34.19.

He raised his price target to $48 from $38 to reflect sector multiple expansion and keeps an Underperform rating on Intel. While the company cited tough comps and inventory digestion for the data center weakness, Richard believes Intel is losing share of bill of material.

AMD facing some near-term challenges, says Mizuho
Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh lowered his price target for AMD (AMD) to $36 from $37 after the company reduced its Q3 sales below consensus, noting weak semi-custom gaming revenues, and 2019 guide to 5% year-over-year growth versus the prior of high single digit growth. The analyst believes there are some challenges for AMD in the near-term. AMD is looking for a "big" Q4 ramp, which might be optimistic even as Intel (INTC) opens up 10/14nm capacity with competitive pricing, says the analyst. He keeps a Neutral rating on AMD shares.

Ambarella, Silicon Labs could be next as semiconductor M&A heats up, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst John Vinh believes semiconductor M&A activity is starting to heat up again, and sees diversification into secular growth areas in IoT, automotive, and cloud, and increased scale and customer breadth, as key underlying deal drivers within the space. The analyst expects further consolidation to continue, but notes U.S./China political tensions and uncertainty regarding regulatory approvals could limit larger scale M&A. Companies that could be acquired next include Ambarella (AMBA) or Silicon Labs (SLAB), he contends, while expecting Broadcom (AVGO), Applied Materials (AMAT), Intel (INTC), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), Skyworks (SWKS), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Xilinx (XLNX) to be the most acquisitive.

Cisco pullback presents 'attractive' buying opportunity, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee sees an "attractive" buying opportunity with Cisco (CSCO) shares down 10% from its 52-week high. Recent investor concerns over a softer macro outlook and softening Enterprise IT spending following NetApp's (NTAP) negative preannouncement are overdone, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. Both of Cisco's direct competitors in networking equipment, Arista Networks (ANET) and Juniper (JNPR), highlighted a strong Enterprise growth, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. Further, Cisco's accelerating sales momentum driven by Campus switching and Security product cycle will allow the company to offset macro headwinds, adds the analyst. Following Apple's Q3, Broadcom called top Apple supply chain pick by Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Rick Schafer said he prefers content increase stories and consistent execution within Apple's (AAPL) supply chain, identifying Broadcom (AVGO) as his top Apple supply chain pick on the heels of the iPhone maker's Q3 report as he believes the chipmaker is set to recapture the share it lost in 2018 this year, implying incremental revenue of about $400M in 2020. He remains on the sidelines on Cirrus Logic (CRUS), citing headwinds from the removal of the digital-to-analog audio converter in 2018 and likely lack of content expansion this year. In terms of Qorvo (QRVO), Schafer said much of the benefit from the mid/high-band iPhone PAD last year "appears lost in the 2019 refresh."

Cirrus Logic ANC not in new Apple AirPods 2, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss says that recent iFixit teardown confirms Cirrus Logic's (CRUS) Adaptive Noise Cancelation, or ANC, is not in the new Apple (AAPL) AirPods 2. The analyst believes shares of Cirrus Logic have risen 30%-plus since hitting their low in the beginning of January on investor belief that it was in the AirPods 2. The low power codec looks very similar to the previously used Maxim Integrated (MXIM) codec, which leads the analyst to believe Apple is likely using Maxim Integrated again. Stoss believes that given the rally in shares and historically high PE, Cirrus Logic's shares will likely selloff as investors figure out their assumptions were incorrect. He reiterates a Hold rating and a $38 price target on Cirrus Logic stock.

Roy is also positive on Cirrus Logic's customer diversification contributing to a "broader set of end market applications."

Avalara initiated with an Outperform at William Blair
William Blair analyst Bhavan Suri last night initiated coverage of Avalara with an Outperform rating. The analyst estimates the company's market opportunity at more than $8B, which he believes can support long-term growth of 20% or higher. The landmark South Dakota versus Wayfair ruling provides a "clear catalyst" for increased adoption of sales tax solutions, as states are empowered to collect sales taxes from out-of-state merchants, says Suri.

The analyst, who noted he is projecting strong growth in its non-semis business in 2020, is also more optimistic on a recovery in Wafer Fab Equipment. He sees MKS Instruments being poised to benefit from this recovery and thinks it can outperform peers with its diversified approach, Ho said. He maintains a Buy rating on MKS shares.

MKS' semis business remains stable and is not yet at an inflection point, but its diversification strategy remains underappreciated, Ho tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes that with ~50% of its business not directly impacted by the semi cycle and with organic and non-organic growth opportunities in other advanced markets, MKS is set up well to be less volatile than its semicap peers and to potentially outgrow them. He views the stock as "mispriced" at current levels.

Memory summit reinforces Goldman view that NAND pricing set to improve
After attending the Flash Memory Summit on August 6 and 7, Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney said his meetings and talks with industry participants reinforced his view that NAND pricing is already showing signs of improvement and increased his confidence that blended NAND pricing will be up sequentially in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, he still thinks DRAM pricing is likely to fall in the near-term, but said the rate of Q4 decline could be "somewhat less severe" than he previously expected. Delaney has a Buy rating on Micron (MU), a Neutral rating on Western Digital (WDC) and a Buy rating on Lam Research (LRCX), which he believes is well-positioned to benefit from continued scaling in NAND.

Lam Research upgraded to Buy on improved WFE spending view at Goldman Sachs

The analyst, who now forecasts the WFE market to grow 7% -year-over-year in 2020 compared to his prior assumption of it being flat, still noted he sees downside to Street estimates for the second half and for calendar year 2020. Hari, who raised his 2020 WFE assumptions in both NAND and DRAM, increased his price target on Lam shares to $231 from $197. Hari also upgraded Applied Materials (AMAT) to Conviction Buy from Neutral and raised his rating on KLA-Tencor (KLAC) to Neutral from Sell, citing similar grounds.
