U.K. parliamentary inquiry recommending loot boxes regulation

The DCMS is recommending that in the absence of any research that proves that there is no harm in exposing children to gambling through loot boxes, a precautionary principle should apply. Further, the report by the digital, culture, media and sport committee argues that they should not appear in games marketed to children such as FIFA 20 or the recent NBA 2K20 which PEGI originally decided not to reclassify after backlash to a trailer depicting loot boxes with casinos and slot machines. The DCMS also concluded that the government should bring forward regulations for loot boxes under section 6 of the Gambling Act during the next parliamentary session to confirm that "loot boxes are a game of chance." Publicly traded vide game makers include Glu Mobile (GLUU), Sony (SNE), Huya (HUYA), Zynga (ZNGA), Take-Two Interactive (TTWO), Electronic Arts (EA), Nintendo (NTDOY), and Activision Blizzard (ATVI). Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Comcast (CMCSA) upgraded to Outperform from Perform at Oppenheimer with analyst Timothy Horan saying the company's fundamentals are "healthy" in the near-term, and 2020 is setting up to be a "strong year." 2. Activision Blizzard (ATVI) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Stephens with analyst Jeff Cohen citing his view that estimates for 2019 are now "de-risked" due to the successful launch of World of Warcraft Classic and the announcement of a Nintendo Switch port of Overwatch. 3. Match Group (MTCH) upgraded to Buy from Hold at SunTrust with analyst Youssef Squali saying that the "positive" intra-quarter app traffic and revenue trends imply a positive quarter-to-date momentum for the company. 4. Incyte (INCY) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at JMP Securities and to Outperform from Perform at Oppenheimer. 5. National Oilwell (NOV) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Jefferies with analyst Bradley Handler saying even with the uncertain macro environment, National Oilwell's outlook includes backlog-based growth potential and less margin risk. Stifel adds Activision Blizzard to Select List, boosts price target to $65
Stifel analyst Drew Crum added Activision Blizzard to his firm's Select List and boosted his price target for the shares to $65 from $57. The stock closed Friday at $54.58. The analyst sees possible upside for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which launches on October 25, as he believes expectations "have been generally lower." Further, BlizzCon 2019 could serve as a share catalyst while Activision's fundamentals should improve in 2020 against an easy comp, Crum tells investors in a research note. He keeps a Buy rating on the shares.

Activision Blizzard upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Andrew Marok upgraded Activision Blizzard to Buy from Neutral and raised his price target for the shares to $64 from $49. The game maker closed yesterday down $1.12 to $54.91. Last month's launch of World of Warcraft Classic has driven "strong, above-expectations" engagement in the franchise, Marok tells investors in a research note. Further, Overwatch has recently added new features and last week announced a launch on the Nintendo Switch, the analyst points out. He believes these provides a "much more favorable backdrop" heading into November's BlizzCon, where he expects Activision will see the reveal of a World of Warcraft expansion for 2020 release and at least one of Diablo 4 or Overwatch 2.

Jefferies says stick with Activision Blizzard after video game survey
After surveying 600 U.S. video game players to gauge interest in the fall content slate and track overall engagement trends, Jefferies analyst Alex Giaimo tells investors to stick with his top pick Activision Blizzard (ATVI). Survey takeaways were positive for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with 36% of responders planning to buy the game, says the analyst. He remains selective and favors Activision over Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two Interactive (TTWO).

Sony appeared to be video game hardware winner on Black Friday, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter notes that each of the four game retailers he tracked, namely Best Buy (BBY), GameStop (GME), Target (TGT) and Walmart (WMT) offered the Marvel's Spider-Man PlayStation 4 Bundle that included a slim PS4 with a 1TB hard drive and Sony's (SNE) Marvel's Spider-Man for $199.99, as well as the Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox One S Minecraft Creators Bundle that included an Xbox One S with a 1TB hard drive, a Minecraft full game download, the Starter Pack, the Creators Pack, and 1,000 Minecoins for $199.99. Nintendo's (NTDOY) primary hardware offering was less compelling given that it was priced at the console's standard MSRP, he adds. The only sell-out that the analyst saw over Black Friday was the primary PS4 deal. Pachter expects the Black Friday deals to eventually translate into permanent price cuts for the base PS4 and Xbox One, possibly by this Christmas.

Nintendo upgraded to Outperform on Switch Lite launch at Wedbush
As previously reported, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter upgraded Nintendo to Outperform from Neutral as he expects the introduction of the Nintendo Switch Lite to drive hardware and software sales well above 2020 guidance and maintain the company's positive momentum into 2021. The analyst also cited increased optimism about Switch's future success, and the release of the mobile game Mario Kart Tour this summer, which could also act as a positive catalyst for shares.

Electronic Arts removed from Best Ideas List at Wedbush
Wedbush is removing Electronic Arts from its Best Ideas List, as the firm sees few near-term catalysts ahead of the launch of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in mid-November. In addition, Wedbush is less confident in upside to guidance for free-to-play title Apex Legends, as it appears to be performing within the guidance range over its first six months. Apex players seem 'extremely pleased' with addition of Solos mode, says Stephens
Stephens analyst Jeff Cohen noted that Apex Legends' Iron Crown Event, which added a Solos mode to the game, has generated a significant amount of media attention and his survey found that the playerbase is "extremely pleased" with the addition of the Solos mode. Though players have expressed frustration with some of the monetization mechanics, his survey of 167 players found that about 80% indicated they will continue playing Apex going forward and Twitch engagement has now eclipsed Season 1 on a like-for-like basis, said Cohen, who keeps an Overweight rating on Electronic Arts shares.

Holiday video game slate less crowded this year, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson sees a less crowded holiday video game title slate this year versus 2018. There are actually more titles launching in holiday 2019, but fewer large titles, suggesting gamer wallet share will be more concentrated, Olson tells investors in a research note. Most notably, Take-Two Interactive's (TTWO) Borderlands 3 and Electronic Arts' (EA) Star Wars Jedi, incremental titles that can expand an established player base, could be beneficiaries, says the analyst. Further, Activision Blizzard's (ATVI) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare could draw in lapsed players, particularly with the inclusion of cross-play, adds Olson. The analyst's survey of over 500 gamers showed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Star Wars are "top of mind." Take-Two and EA have the most near-term upside potential but with a "strong" 2020 slate, Activision "may be the best longer-term bet," Olson writes. He has Overweight ratings on all three names.

Glu Mobile price target lowered to $7 from $12 at Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson lowered his price target for Glu Mobile to $7 from $12 and maintains an Overweight rating on the shares. While the company reported "solid" Q2 results, fiscal 2019 bookings and adjusted EBITDA guidance were lowered "well below" consensus due to weakness in WWE Universe and the delay of Disney Sorcerer's Arena to Q1 of 2020, Olson tells investors in a research note. However, while this "latest challenge" will likely test the company's credibility and investor patience, the stock now reflects these issues and the setup for 2020 is "compelling," contends the analyst.

Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey lowered his price target on Glu Mobile to $8 from $14 after the company "greatly reduced" its FY19 outlook due to the push out of Disney Sorcerer's Arena, weaker than expected performance from WWE Universe and higher marketing spending. Glu has had strong success in M&A, said Hickey, though he does not see any near-term pivot to being more opportunistic about deals and he doesn't think Glu plans to repurchase shares. However, he keeps a Buy rating on Glu shares.

Sony, Microsoft JV a 'surprsing turn' in 'battle for living room,' says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said he views the joint venture pact between competitors Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) on cloud-based gaming services as both "surprising" and a validation of the emerging market for streaming. The two companies clearly view video games as strategically important enough to put aside their intense competition and see Google (GOOGL) as a legitimate competitor and the Stadia streaming platform as a credible threat, said Sebastian, who added that he does not believe this means Sony and Microsoft will forego their separate console hardware platforms. He also believes that video game developers and publishers should benefit from the intensifying battle among platform companies for share of the game market and the "living room audience." Publicly traded game makers include Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two (TTWO).

AMD has 'ample opportunity' to drive further growth, says Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst David Wong believes AMD's (AMD) "strong" 7nm product pipeline and recent next-generation gaming console wins could help it to maintain its microprocessor momentum and support its "semi-custom" revenue stream. In addition, AMD has "ample opportunity" to drive further growth through market share gains in discrete GPUs for personal computers and continued penetration of the market for datacenter GPUs and accelerators, Wong tells investors in a research note. He reiterates a Buy rating on the shares with a $33 price target. He highlights the company's gaming wins with Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG, GOOGL), and Sony (SNE).

Zynga still 'cheap' despite 62% year-to-date rally, says Jefferies

He keeps a Buy rating on the shares with a $7.50 price target. Despite the 62% move higher year-to-date, the stock is still "cheap" at 17 times estimated 2020 EBITDA, contends Giaimo.

Piper mobile analysis positive for Activision, slightly negative for EA
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says his firm's Q2 "mobile meter" analysis of iOS app rankings in the U.S. suggests upside potential versus consensus Q2 mobile revenue for Activision Blizzard (ATVI). Further, the data for Glu Mobile (GLUU) and Zynga (ZNGA) appear "essentially in-line" and "slightly negative" for Electronic Arts (EA) relative to consensus mobile revenue estimates, Olson tells investors in a research note. Oppenheimer analyst Andrew Uerkwitz raised his price target for Take-Two to $145 from $135 after meeting with management and walking away more confident in the underlying fundamentals of the industry and his Outperform thesis, which is predicated on the idea that majority of future growth in the industry will come from original or irregular-sequelled, high quality content. Moreover, to grow recurring revenue, in-game rewards must by tightly integrated with satisfying gameplay loop as opposed to repetitive grind, the analyst contends, nothing that in this regard, Take-Two "not only has a strong track record but is arguably the best at it."
