Fly Intel: Top five weekend stock stories

Catch up on the weekend's top five stories with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Boeing (BA) engineers working on a flight-control system for the 737 Max omitted key safeguards that had been included in an earlier version of the same system used on a military tanker jet, The Wall Street Journal's Alison Sider and Andrew Tangel reported, citing people familiar with the matter. 2. SoftBank (SFTBY) is tapping Marcelo Claure to help turn around WeWork (WE), after ousting co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Adam Neumann, Bloomberg's Giles Turner, Sarah McBride and Liana Baker reported. Masayoshi Son, the head of SoftBank, WeWork's largest investor, has asked the former CEO of Sprint (S) to take a more hands-on role helping oversee a cleanup of the office-rental company from his position at SoftBank, but no decision has been made on his exact role, people familiar with the matter said. 3. Nothing seems to be going right for American Airlines (AAL) this year, including Boeing grounding the 737 Max and taking 24 of American's 956 mainline jets out of service, Al Root wrote in this week's edition of Barron's. The troubles have hammered the company's shares, the author noted, with some investors betting that this is about as bad as it gets. If the Boeing 737 Max can return to service and a contract is reached with the mechanics union, the reasoning goes, the shares could be ready for takeoff, he contended. 4. DreamWork's "Abominable" won the domestic box office with $20.9M in its first weekend. The movie is set to open Tuesday in China. Elsewhere overseas, the movie grossed $8.8M from 30 markets for a total of $31M globally. The film received an A CinemaScore and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. 5. Netflix (NFLX), Slack Technologies (WORK), and Wells Fargo (WFC) saw positive mentions in this week's edition of Barron's.

AeroVironment can take 'material' share in $15B market, says William Blair
AeroVironment (AVAV) can take "material" market share from the $15B per year satellite manufacturing industry as a supplier to Softbank (SFTBY), William Blair analyst Louie DiPalma tells investors in a research note after meeting with the head of Softbank's Advanced Technology Division, Ryuji Wakikawa. The analyst points out that Softbank in January 2018 formed a joint venture with AeroVironment called HAPSMobile to develop high-altitude, solar-powered drones for the purpose of providing next-generation Internet of Things connectivity. HAPSMobile now represents nearly 20% of AeroVironment's sales, DiPalma says. He affirms an Outperform rating on AeroVironment shares.

RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves lowered his price target on Nvidia (NVDA) to $230 after yesterday's report that Softbank (SFTBF) is exploring the sale of its stake in the company early next year. The analyst believes that in the near-term, the speculation is a negative since Softbank has "solid information on overall Data Center trends". Steves maintains his Outperform rating however, stating that a number of long-only investment managers have not participated in the run-up of the stock price. The analyst adds that Nvidia's long-term investment story around "AI/VR/AR/Autonomous" driving remains intact.

Barclays sees aerospace aftermarket stocks continuing to outperform in 2020
Barclays analyst David Strauss' analysis of global airline flight schedules indicates ~3% flight hour growth through the end of 2019, or 200 to 250 basis points below typical levels, due to the combination of the Boeing (BA) MAX grounding and weaker underlying traffic demand. The analyst forecasts decelerating second half of 2019 aftermarket growth as a result, given airlines dependency on older out-of-warranty aircraft. However, even with expected return of MAX in 2020, he forecasts that the aftermarket still grows 6%-8% as incremental MAX flight hours "do little to dilute contribution of continued strong growth in the older out-of-warranty fleet, which is responsible for the majority of aftermarket demand." Among his coverage, Strauss says TransDigm (TDG) is the primary beneficiary of continued aftermarket strength while Woodward (WWD) also has significant exposure. He believes the aerospace aftermarket stocks will continue to outperform in 2020 "despite elevated relative valuations."

Boeing CEO update at Laguna conference 'encouraging,' says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Rajeev Lalwani called Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg's update at the firm's Laguna conference "encouraging," noting that he reported that the 737 MAX certification process is progressing with no major setbacks. Muilenburg still sees the MAX returning to service in Q4, though he acknowledged that approval timing from global regulators and a collaborative approach among them are risks that could contribute to timing delays or a production halt, said Lalwani. Widebody risks are rising due to trade disputes, though they are contained for now, while 777X headwinds are mounting, there is no shift in the recently amended timeline, added Lalwani. Following the CEO presentation, the analyst maintains his Overweight rating and $500 price target on Boeing shares.

Embraer upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS
As previously reported, UBS analyst Myles Walton upgraded Embraer (ERJ) to Buy and raised his price target to $23 from $22, citing the approaching closing of its acquisition by Boeing (BA). The analyst notes that while he sees the possibility of that closing being delayed because of the stalling approval by China regulators, he does not see a significant risk of it being blocked. Walton adds that RemainCo catalysts beyond the tie-up are appearing, citing Embraer's first delivery of KC-390 aircraft to Brazilian air force earlier this month, with another expected to be delivered in Q4.

Further, Horan argues that Verizon should be early and successful in its 5G network, and expects it to pick up a lot of mid-band spectrum inexpensively next year. Its ARPUs should continue growing, and strong cable wholesale growth is accretive, he adds.

Now is 'opportune time' to buy Dish, Raymond James says in double upgrade

Following the recent pullback on investor concerns about the shift from a spectrum bank to a wireless operator, now is the "opportune time" to buy shares of Dish, Prentiss tells investors in a research note. The T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S) merger saga should wrap up in the next six months, while 5G network deployments by U.S. carriers needing multiple spectrum bands should ramp, contends the analyst. Macquarie warns about pricing pressure among airlines from Southwest competition
Macquarie analyst Susan Donofrio downgraded American Airlines (AAL), Spirit Airlines (SAVE), Hawaiian Holdings (HA), and Alaska Air (ALK) to Neutral from Outperform as part of a broader industry note, saying the competitive environment for these airlines should become "choppy" in the fall of 2019 and in 2020 as Southwest (LUV) attempts to win back market share. The analyst believes that the latter's sizable domestic scope should lead to "unit revenue softness" within the overall pricing structure, through she maintains an Outperform rating on United Airlines (UAL), Delta (DAL) and Allegiant (ALGT) given their ongoing revenue initiatives and minimal overlap with Southwest.

Berenberg says big 4 airlines can generate cash, prefers American and Delta
As previously reported, Berenberg analyst Adrian Yanoshik initiated coverage of the four largest U.S. airlines, starting American Airlines (AAL) with a Buy rating and $35 price target, Delta Air Lines (DAL) with a Buy rating and $72 price target, United Continental (UAL) with a Hold rating and $95 price target and Southwest Airlines (LUV) with a Hold rating and $57 price target. Amid market worries over both capacity growth and demand weakness, his work suggests that U.S. airlines can generate free cash flow in "all scenarios but a 9/11-scale shock," Yanoshik tells investors. He thinks airline sector valuations reflect fears, but overlook broadly stable, albeit two-tiered, returns. He would buy American with valuation at multi-year lows as he estimates that American will narrow its margin gap to peers and thinks it debt burden is misunderstood. He would also buy Delta, which Yanoshik calls "arguably the highest-quality airline."

Stifel constructive on Netflix ahead of earnings, sees light net adds priced in
Stifel analyst Scott Devitt said he views Netflix management's explanations regarding the company's lower than expected net additions in Q2 as "mostly reasonable" and he thinks the stock is now pricing in potentially light net adds for Q3 and light Q4 guidance. Given that sentiment has "turned decidedly bearish" amid "a slew" of intra-quarter announcements from competitors about upcoming streaming-video-on-demand products," he is constructive on the risk/reward set up ahead of the company's earnings report, Devitt tells investors. JPMorgan reiterates Overweight on Netflix with stock down 12% in seven days
Netflix (NFLX) shares are down 27% since the Q2 earnings report, including down 12% over the past seven trading days, due to increased concern around Q3 net additions, especially in international markets, and heightened competition heading toward year-end and into 2020 from Disney+ (DIS), Apple TV+ (AAPL), and HBO Max (T), JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth tells investors in a research note. While the operating environment is changing, global disruption of linear TV is a "strong secular trend" that remains early stage in many international markets, and Netflix will remain a key beneficiary as more people cut the cord, says Anmuth. Further, the analyst believes Netflix has "significant advantages" around data and also its breadth and depth of content. In addition, the bar for Q3 has come down, says Anmuth, who keeps an Overweight rating on Netflix with a $425 price target.

Last three weeks soft for Netflix app downloads, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Douglas Mitchelson says that while July and the first few weeks of August looked like Netflix subscriber growth trends had rebounded from Q2 based on his analysis of Sensor Tower first time Netflix app downloads globally, the last 3 weeks have been relatively soft. While the analyst cautions that app downloads are best used as a general momentum indicator for Netflix subscriber trends and that it is hard to correlate app download levels with a specific Netflix quarterly net additions outcome, he would note his view has shifted from Q3 likely coming in line-to-ahead of guidance to now likely in line-to-below. Mitchelson reiterates an Outperform rating and $440 price target on the shares.

Barclays still likes Netflix shares with bearish views becoming 'de jour'
Since Netflix's Q2 miss, bearish views on the company have become "de jour," with structural issues becoming a bigger concern, Barclays analyst Kannan Venkateshwar tells investors in a research note titled "Wall of worry overblown". However, he believes the structural worries related to new competition and growing competition for talent "needs context." 90% of Netflix's subscriber growth next year will come from outside the U.S., but both new competition as well as content loss is for the most part a U.S. issue, contends Venkateshwar. Netflix's domestic wholesale distribution is likely to continue, helping subscribers grow and should also help reduce churn, says the analyst. Venkateshwar also believes that the launch of multiple streaming services is likely to alter the overall distribution model for streaming in a manner "that ironically could benefit Netflix the most." The analyst does not believe major licensors other than Disney (DIS) will withhold content from third parties like Netflix permanently due to the magnitude of dependence on these revenue streams. Also, he thinks the execution risk around new services such as Disney+ and HBO Max are "substantial, which is not being recognized at present." While admitting there is a "narrative risk near term for the story muting short term performance," Venkateshwar continues to like Netflix shares with an Overweight rating and $375 price target.

Large-cap banks aren't gaining deposit market share, says Morgan Stanley

Individual large-cap banks that have had the biggest deposit share gains include Goldman Sachs (GS), Ally Financial (ALLY) and Synchrony Financial (SYF), while mid-cap banks that have delivered the biggest gains in share of total deposits include First Republic (FRC), KeyCorp (KEY) and Huntington (HBAN), Zerbe tells investors. Large-cap banks that have seen the largest declines in their respective individual shares of total deposits include JPMorgan (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC) and Citigroup (C), while deposit share losers among mid-cap banks include Comerica (CMA), Prosperity Bancshares (PB) and Zions (ZION), said Zerbe.
