Activision, Take-Two to benefit from next videogame cycle, Barron's says

Sony (SNE) has announced that its new console will be named PlayStation 5 and will launch in time for the 2020 holidays, while Microsoft (MSFT) saying its next console - code-named Project Scarlett - will also arrive in time for the 2020 holiday season, Tae Kim writes in this week's edition of Barron's. This will mean a new videogame console cycle, with Activision Blizzard (ATVI) and Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) likely to benefit from it, the author notes. Reference Link

Chicken Soup for the Soul initiated with a Buy at Maxim
As previously reported, Maxim analyst Allen Klee initiated Chicken Soup for the Soul (CSSE) with a Buy rating and a price target of $18. The analyst expects the company's Crackle Plus online streaming joint venture with Sony (SNE) to double the company's revenues in 2019, making it "one of the largest players in the attractive advertising video-on-demand market." Klee also cites Chicken Soup for the Soul's "strong brands, accretive acquisitions, low risk TV production, and revenue streams from production/distribution/advertising", positioning the company for longer term growth. The analyst further cites the attractive valuation for the shares at 12-times his expected 2019 adjusted EBITDA.

AMD has 'ample opportunity' to drive further growth, says Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst David Wong believes AMD's (AMD) "strong" 7nm product pipeline and recent next-generation gaming console wins could help it to maintain its microprocessor momentum and support its "semi-custom" revenue stream. In addition, AMD has "ample opportunity" to drive further growth through market share gains in discrete GPUs for personal computers and continued penetration of the market for datacenter GPUs and accelerators, Wong tells investors in a research note. He reiterates a Buy rating on the shares with a $33 price target. He highlights the company's gaming wins with Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG, GOOGL), and Sony (SNE).

Sony, Microsoft JV a 'surprsing turn' in 'battle for living room,' says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said he views the joint venture pact between competitors Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) on cloud-based gaming services as both "surprising" and a validation of the emerging market for streaming. The two companies clearly view video games as strategically important enough to put aside their intense competition and see Google (GOOGL) as a legitimate competitor and the Stadia streaming platform as a credible threat, said Sebastian, who added that he does not believe this means Sony and Microsoft will forego their separate console hardware platforms. He also believes that video game developers and publishers should benefit from the intensifying battle among platform companies for share of the game market and the "living room audience." Publicly traded game makers include Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two (TTWO).

CIOs see continued pressure on IT budgets in 2020, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analysts Katy Huberty, James Faucette and Keith Weiss noted that rising economic uncertainty has been reflected in the firm's past several CIO surveys, with 2019 overall IT budget growth expectations falling for 4 straight quarters. In keeping with that trend, 53% of the CIOs surveyed by the firm expect lower IT budget growth in 2020 and their composite initial read on 2020 IT spending calls for a 100 basis points growth deceleration, the firm's U.S. tech team stated in a note to investors. Among those surveyed, Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) are seen as having taken over the lead in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning while IBM (IBM) "maintains strong mind share," the analysts said. The team continues to favor companies they see as well positioned for key secular trends with good valuation, such as Microsoft, Adobe (ADBE) and Salesforce (CRM), while they are more cautious on legacy players at risk of losing share as organizations move to the cloud, like Symantec (SYMC) and VMware (VMW).

Slack Technologies price target lowered to $26 from $31 at DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Rishi Jaluria lowered his price target on Slack Technologies (WORK) to $26 and kept his Neutral rating on the shares after holding talks with its VP of Investor Relations Jesse Hulsing. The analyst notes that the company is in the "encouraging" early stages of adoption phase by companies outside of its core verticals and sees the pace of its overall platform adoption as solid, but also warns that "competitive intensity" from Microsoft (MSFT) on the marketing side is tightening. Overall, Jaluria remains positive on Slack's growth runway, but sees its stock as "fairly valued".

Wedbush expects Microsoft to post 'solid beat across the board'
Ahead of quarterly results, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives says he expects Microsoft to post a "solid beat across the board" on both the top and bottom line as cloud strength on Azure and Office 365 continues to be the fuel in the tank with "strong field checks" indicating the company could beat commercial cloud expectations by about 3%-plus. The analyst believes Microsoft remains in an "enviable position" heading into 2020 on the heels of its cloud success and is firing on all cylinders around its Office 365 and Azure strategic vision based on his recent checks. He reiterates an Outperform rating and $160 price target on the shares.

KeyBanc views Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty: Mobile datapoints as positive
KeyBanc analyst Tyler Parker notes that according to Sensortower, Activivision's "Call of Duty: Mobile" has accumulated over $2M in spend and 20M downloads within the first few days of release. This is relatively in line or above other battle royale games, or mobile games that have stemmed from established IP on console, he contends. The analyst continues to believe that the game has significant potential as a premium mobile game experience, and views initial datapoints as positive relative to his expectations of $20M for Q4.

Activision Blizzard price target raised to $59 from $56 at SunTrust
SunTrust analyst Matthew Thornton says he expects "solid" Q3 reports from the video game companies, with Activision Blizzard (ATVI) having the most upside vs. consensus, driven by WoW and model EPS and revenue at 30c and $1.27B. The analyst raised his price target to $59 from $56 and maintains a Buy rating. He expects "at least" an in-line Q2 report from Electronic Arts (EA) and expects full-year guidance to be raised, though not likely to where the consensus is yet with half the fiscal year still to go. Thornton sees Take-Two's (TTWO) Q2 results to be slightly above the consensus, but sees initial Q3 guidance to be slightly below consensus, citing the company's "typical conservatism." He expects Take-Two to raise full-year guidance, though not likely to where the consensus is yet.

Stephens sees 'robust demand' for Take-Two's 'Red Dead 2' on PC
Stephens analyst Jeff Cohen reiterated an Overweight rating and $145 on Take-Two after the game maker's Rockstar unit confirmed that its popular game "Red Dead Redemption 2" will be coming to PC on November 5, exclusively on the developer's own PC launcher. Cohen said that with the release date for the port being confirmed, five months of "Red Dead" PC sales will be captured in fiscal 2020. He assumes in his model 2.5M units for the PC port in FY20, which "could wind up being conservative" as he had previously assumed the launch would come later in the quarter. The analyst said he continues to believe there is "robust demand" for the PC release and thinks that the release can also boost interest in "Red Dead Online" moving forward.

His ongoing confidence in Activision, even after the recent run-up in shares, is due to a "favorable catalyst path" into 2020. This began with the recent launch of World of Warcraft Classic and continues with multiple new or updated titles coming over the next four-to-five quarters, Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst also keeps an Overweight rating on Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two Interactive (TTWO).
