Fly Intel: What to watch in IBM's earnings report

IBM (IBM) is scheduled to report results of its fiscal third quarter after the market close on October 16, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. What to watch for: 1. GUIDANCE/RED HAT: On August 2, IBM updated its guidance for fiscal 2019 to include the contribution from the acquisition of Red Hat, cutting its FY19 operating earnings per share view to "at least" $12.80 from "at least" $13.90. Analysts at the time were expecting the company to report FY19 EPS of $13.90, but that figure has since dropped to $12.81. IBM added in presentation slides that it sees the acquisition of Red Hat being accretive to operating EPS by the end of year two and is expected to contribute to IBM growth in 2020. Meanwhile, the company said in the slides that, given the seasonality of its base business, it expects Q3 base revenue to decline $1.3B-$1.4B from the second quarter. IBM reported total revenue of $19.2B for Q2. 2. LIBRA: Last month, Jason Kelley, IBM's general manager of blockchain services, said that the company was open to working with Facebook (FB) on its Libra digital currency efforts, according to CNBC. Kelley said that IBM was looking to foster "collaboration" across industries when it comes to like blockchain, which he calls a "team sport." "Our clients are ready to work with and we're ready to work with all of them to bring it together," he said, according to CNBC. Since those comments, however, several companies that original pledged to support the Libra project have exited the network, including Visa (V), PayPal (PYPL), eBay (EBAY), Stripe, MasterCard (MA), and Booking Holdings (BKNG). According to Business Insider, though, Facebook took measures to advance Libra amid the backer mutiny. 3. LATAM EXPANSION: In late August, IBM announced plans to launch a new IBM Cloud multizone region, namely MZR in Latin America by late 2020. The MZR in Brazil will become IBM's first in Latin America, and will help clients in the region quickly deploy mission-critical workloads and applications across hybrid cloud environments, the company said. "Our continued cloud investment reflects that clients are increasingly seeking hybrid cloud environments that offer access to cutting edge tools including AI, analytics, IoT and blockchain to boost competitiveness," said Tonny Martins, General Manager, IBM Brazil. "As companies in Brazil look to gain greater control of their data in the face of upcoming tighter compliance and protection regulations, IBM offers the cloud capabilities that allow them to innovate and take advantage of data from all sources across any hybrid multicloud environment." 4. CCC: Also in late August, Microsoft Azure (MSFT) CTO Mark Russinovich said that the company was joining Google (GOOG, GOOGL), IBM, Intel (INTC), and other technology giants to create the Confidential Computing Consortium, an organization that will be dedicated to "defining and accelerating the adoption of confidential computing." Other members of the consortium include Alibaba (BABA), ARM (SFTBF), Red Hat, Baidu (BIDU), Swisscom (SCMWY), and Tencent (TCEHY).

CIOs see continued pressure on IT budgets in 2020, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analysts Katy Huberty, James Faucette and Keith Weiss noted that rising economic uncertainty has been reflected in the firm's past several CIO surveys, with 2019 overall IT budget growth expectations falling for 4 straight quarters. In keeping with that trend, 53% of the CIOs surveyed by the firm expect lower IT budget growth in 2020 and their composite initial read on 2020 IT spending calls for a 100 basis points growth deceleration, the firm's U.S. tech team stated in a note to investors. Among those surveyed, Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) are seen as having taken over the lead in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning while IBM (IBM) "maintains strong mind share," the analysts said. The team continues to favor companies they see as well positioned for key secular trends with good valuation, such as Microsoft, Adobe (ADBE) and Salesforce (CRM), while they are more cautious on legacy players at risk of losing share as organizations move to the cloud, like Symantec (SYMC) and VMware (VMW).

JPMorgan ups IBM target to $152 on favorable view of Red Hat deal
JPMorgan analyst Tien-tsin Huang views IBM's acquisition of Red Hat favorably, saying the asset "should energize" IBM's quest to be the leader in hybrid cloud. The acquisition, while not without risks, could significantly accelerate OpenShift adoption rates, and help Red Hat establish the product as an industry standard in Containerization, Huang tells investors in a research note. He raised his price target for IBM to $152 from $147 but keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. The analyst wants to see proof of integration and execution before getting more constructive on the name.

Cloudera upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at JMP Securities
As previously reported, JMP Securities analyst Patrick Walravens upgraded Cloudera (CLDR) to Outperform from Market Perform with a $12 price target after its Q2 earnings beat and raised FY20 guidance yesterday. The analyst notes that the results were much improved in the latest quarter while also raising his FY20 EPS view to (26c) from (30c). Walravens sees a number of catalysts for Cloudera, including the phased rollout of its Data Platform, new strategic partnerships such as one announced with IBM (IBM) in June, as well as a "new open source licensing and distribution framework that aligns Cloudera's model with industry standards set by Red Hat". The analyst also sees the stock as "quite reasonably valued" at 2.1-times enterprise value to his expected 20201 revenues.

Helfstein is now less concerned about competition from Facebook (FB) Dating, and highlights that 3P download data shows an acceleration in Tinder and localized offerings. Jefferies selective on Internet into Q3, most positive on Alphabet and Facebook
Jefferies analyst Brent Thill, who is "generally positive" on Internet sector fundamentals, tells investors to remain selective ahead of Q3 earnings. The analyst is most bullish on Alphabet (GOOGL), Facebook (FB), Expedia (EXPE), and Wix.com (WIX). He remains underweight TripAdvisor (TRIP), Shutterstock (SSTK), and Endurance (EIGI). Thill is most positive on Alphabet and Facebook. Alphabet's setup is better in the second half of the year relative to the first half due to easier comps, healthy core advertising, momentum in Google Cloud, and expanded hardware line-up ahead of the holidays, the analyst tells investors in a research note. He also likes Facebook's setup due to easier second half comps, recent product innovation on Instagram Commerce, and improvements to the core Facebook app. In e-commerce, Thill is a buyer of Amazon.com (AMZN) on any pullback. In travel, he like Expedia (EXPE) over Booking Holdings (BKNG). The analyst also views the recent selloff in Match Group (MTCH) shares as a buying opportunity.

Demand side indications remain strong for both News Feed and Instagram as respective return on ad spend remains at the top end of advertiser buys, Zgutowicz tells investors in a research note. However, with Facebook "under a regulator microscope," the analyst does not expect a "big" beat and raise quarter, but rather a modest beat and reduction to 2019 expense growth guidance. With the stock trading at 19 times estimated 2020 earnings, a modest beat will satisfy "the bar," contends Zgutowicz. He reiterates a Buy rating on Facebook with a $242 price target.

PayPal leads among P2P providers, app share remains stable, says UBS

Slack overhang from Microsoft competition should dissipate, says William Blair
After hosting investor meetings with Slack Technologies (WORK) management, William Blair analyst Bhavan Suri has "increased confidence in the story." While there was plenty of focus on the competitive environment with Microsoft (MSFT) and its Teams offering, much of the conversation also focused on the company's internal growth initiatives, its ability to continue winning large enterprise customers, its customer acquisition strategy, and the path to free cash flow breakeven, Suri tells investors in a research note. Management views Slack as having a different value proposition than Teams, says the analyst. Although the Microsoft overhang may remain with the stock for the next couple of quarters, it should dissipate over time as the company continues to execute and showcases its ability to win customers that are also using Office 365 for other functions, Suri contends. He believes Slack is well positioned long-term to continue "winning in the space" and sees a "long growth runway" for the company. The analyst keeps an Outperform rating on the shares.

Further, Tmall is more effective in new products launches, with higher profits for Alibaba versus Pinduoduo (PDD), contends the analyst. Wong views Alibaba as attractively valued and boosted the stock's price target to $233 from $230. The analyst keeps a Buy rating on the shares.

NetEase price target raised to $326 from $301 at Citi
Citi analyst Hillman Chan raised his price target for NetEase (NTES) to $326 from $301 saying he's positive on the sale of Kaola to Alibaba (BABA). The disposal signals NetEase's continuous focus on profitability and the additional funding to Cloud Music could make it more competitive versus Tencent Music (TME), Chan tells investors in a research note. The analyst expects investors to gradually assign value to NetEase's remaining non-gaming assets, like Cloud Music, and he keeps a Buy rating on the shares.

Alibaba unlikely to revise sales guidance at investor day, says Citi
Citi analyst Alicia Yap expects Alibaba's September 23 and 24 investor days to focus on new chairman and CEO Daniel Zhang's vision and strategy, the CFO's comments on investment strategy and margins, and progress and customer feedback on recommended feeds and Tmall 2.0 initiatives. The analyst believes the CFO is unlikely to revise Alibaba's fiscal 2020 revenue guidance, and instead will likely offer reassurance on "healthy" growth in core marketplace margins and on a disciplined approach to new investment initiatives. Yap keeps a Buy rating on Alibaba shares with a $233 price target.

Easing competition presents potential upside for Pinduoduo, says BofA/Merrill
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Joyce Ju said her proprietary price point checks on some products across Chinese e-commerce platforms, including Alibaba's (BABA) Taobao, support the assumption of a stabilized competitive landscape and less aggressive promotion in Q3. The easing price competition should give Pinduoduo (PDD) more budget flexibility and room for moderate margin upside in non-peak season, according to Ju, who raised her price target on the stock to $39 from $34. She maintains a Buy rating on Pinduoduo.

Nvidia price target lowered to $230 from $260 at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves lowered his price target on Nvidia (NVDA) to $230 after yesterday's report that Softbank (SFTBF) is exploring the sale of its stake in the company early next year. The analyst believes that in the near-term, the speculation is a negative since Softbank has "solid information on overall Data Center trends". Steves maintains his Outperform rating however, stating that a number of long-only investment managers have not participated in the run-up of the stock price. The analyst adds that Nvidia's long-term investment story around "AI/VR/AR/Autonomous" driving remains intact.

SoftBank price target raised to $60 from $50 at BTIG
BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk raised his price target on SoftBank (SFTBY) to $60 and kept his Buy rating, citing his "better understanding" of the previously acquired ARM Holdings business which warrants a higher multiple. The analyst also sees a major catalyst coming in the "imminent decision" around Sprint (S) / T-Mobile (TMUS) deal, which could amount to additional $14 price target impact on Softbank shares.

Baidu could use Ctrip proceeds for buyback, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Thomas Chong thinks the proposed secondary offering announced by Ctrip (CTRP) represents about one-third of Baidu's (BIDU) stake in the company. He sees the relationship between both companies as unchanged post the deal. Further, it should provide greater strategic flexibility for Baidu with additional U.S. dollars, and share repurchases could be one option for the cash, Chong tells investors in a research note. He keeps a Buy rating on Baidu with a $134.50 price target.

Baidu price target raised to $141 from $137 at HSBC
HSBC analyst Binnie Wong said Baidu is currently navigating through macro headwinds and competition challenges to its core search but she expects an inflection point to come in 2020. She thinks Baidu's earlier investments might start bearing fruit shortly, while investments remain flattish, likely driving a sequential margin improvement, said Wong, who raised her price target on Baidu shares to $141 from $137 and keeps a Buy rating on the stock.

Bernstein sees limited downside for iQIYI, upgrades to Market Perform
Bernstein analyst David Dai upgraded iQIYI (IQ) to Market Perform from Underperform with a price target of $18, up from $16. The company's near-term outlook and sentiment should improve, creating limited downside for the shares, Dai tells investors in a research note. The analyst sees iQIYI's near-term headwinds turning "incrementally better from here" ahead of declining content costs next year. Baidu (BIDU) should also benefit from improving profitability and reducing loss from iQIYI, says Dai. The analyst maintains a Market Perform rating on Baidu shares with a $126 price target.
