Buckingham no longer tactically bullish on Boeing amid continued negative news
Buckingham analyst Richard Safran continues to believe issues with Boeing's 737 MAX will be resolved and he sees a year end return to service for the aircraft. However, in light of continued negative news flow and increasingly negative investor sentiment, he has changed his view on the stock and is no longer tactically bullish. He keeps a Neutral rating and $395 price target on Boeing shares.

Stifel downgrades Southwest on risk of deal to lessen Boeing dependency
Stifel analyst Joseph DeNardi downgraded Southwest Airlines (LUV) to Hold from Buy with a price target of $60, down from $75. The stock in morning trading is up 7c to $53.55. Southwest is an all Boeing (BA) 737 airline, which makes its business model dependent on 737s, DeNardi tells investors in a research note. Southwest's decision to remove the 737 MAX from its schedule through early February, a "deteriorating" relationship between the Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing, and reports that Boeing may be looking at a 737 MAX rate cut indicate that Southwest "may be nearing a tipping point" where the duration of the MAX grounding pushes it to consider more significant and strategic solutions, including acquisitions, DeNardi contends. The analyst believes an acquisition by Southwest motivated by a desire to diversify away from the MAX "creates significant risks" in the near term for the company. DeNardi today also upgraded shares of JetBlue Airways (JBLU) to Buy from Hold.

JetBlue could be worth $28 in a takeout scenario, says Stifel
Stifel analyst Joseph DeNardi upgraded JetBlue to Buy from Hold with a price target of $24, up from $22. In a research note to investors, DeNardi says that a prolonged grounding of Boeing's (BA) 737 MAX is an "existential threat" to Southwest's (LUV) business model and that the "only reasonable option" Southwest has to address this risk is through an acquisition of JetBlue or Alaska Air (ALK). When combined with JetBlue's attractive CASMx story into 2020, the analyst now sees the increased likelihood of M&A as presenting a sufficiently attractive risk/reward setup to justify an upgrade. JetBlue could be worth $28 in a takeout scenario, DeNardi says. The Stifel analyst downgraded Southwest to Hold from Buy.

Thermo Fisher downgraded to Buy at Needham on valuation, slower growth

The analyst cites the "meaningful valuation improvement" of 32% for the stock over the past six months vs. the 20% advance for S&P500 along with his expectation of decelerating near-term organic revenue growth from the 7.2% reported in Q1 given the slower global business investment spending environment.

Thermo Fisher growth rate has moderated from first half, says Cleveland Research
Cleveland Research analyst Steve Willoughby said his recent checks suggest Thermo Fisher's growth rate has likely moderated from the first half of the year due to slower trends in Europe and China that are likely being somewhat offset by continued U.S. strength. He sees Q3 as "likely in-line" and thinks FY19 guidance appears realistic, though he said he is more concerned that the "end of year budget flush may be less impactful as compared to the past two years," Willoughby tells investors. AbbVie survey supports above-consensus estimates, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Raymond keeps an Overweight rating on AbbVie (ABBV) shares with an $81 price target following a new rheumatologist survey by his firm's partners Spherix Global Insights. The survey indicates "robust" expectations for the company's oral JAK1 inhibitor Rinvoq, Raymond tells investors in a research note. Rheumatologists project that in six months, Rinvoq will leapfrog Eli Lilly's (LLY) Olumiant to become the second-most prescribed JAK with 5% share, says the analyst, citing the survey. Lilly's 'impressive update' raised bar higher for Blueprint, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Raymond said he thinks Eli Lilly (LLY) issued an "impressive update" on selpercatinib at the World Lung meeting, raising the bar for Blueprint Medicines' (BPMC) pralsetinib "meaningfully higher." While selpercatinib's "best-in-class" ORR was maintained, initial durability data could be upwards of 50% better than that of pralsetinib, according to Raymond. While cautioning that his comparison is highly preliminary, Raymond said he worries that LOXO-292's superiority gap against pralsetinib "may be widening." He keeps a Neutral rating on Blueprint shares, which are down about 3% in morning trading to $75.89.

She believes that the U.S. Construction Equipment market peaked in 2019 and that Energy & Transportation, or E&T, markets will fail to re-accelerate in 2020, leading Yakavonis to now expect negative growth in the company's two largest business segments in 2020 as well as less upside in Resources. Caterpillar price target lowered to $149 after dealer survey at Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Jamie Cook said 35% of Caterpillar dealers surveyed by the firm cited risks, albeit modest, to full year estimates, while the rest reiterated prior forecasts calling for demand to be flat to up 5%. In the U.S., used pricing remains fairly stable and dealer inventory is slightly elevated in certain regions, Cook said he found. For 2020, however, the outlook is now seen as worse, projected to be down 5%-10% compared to last quarter's forecast of flat to down 5%, the analyst noted. He lowered his FY19-FY21 EPS forecasts in response to the further deterioration in the survey results and weaker industrial data more broadly, causing him to cut his price target for Caterpillar shares to $149 from $165. Cook keeps an Outperform rating on Caterpillar.

UnitedHealth comments on 2020 eased concerns about MCOs, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Ricky Goldwasser noted that concerns over democratic presidential candidates' positions on "Medicare For All" have been weighing on the Managed Care Organization group since April when a bill was officially introduced in congress by Bernie Sanders. However, UnitedHealth (UNH) shares rose sharply, and the MCO group joined in yesterday, after the company reported an in-line Q3 Medical Loss Ratio, or MLR, and gave commentary on 2020 that eased market concerns around fundamentals, Goldwasser said. The analyst, who keeps an Overweight rating on UnitedHealth with a $294 price target, said the next catalyst for the MCO group will be Anthem's (ANTM) earnings report on October 23. JPMorgan downgrades CSX and Echo Global, upgrades Hub Group
JPMorgan analyst Brian Ossenbeck downgraded both CSX (CSX) and Echo Global (ECHO) to Neutral from Overweight while upgrading Hub Group (HUBG) to Overweight from Neutral. The analyst sees downside risk to 2020 consensus estimates across the Transportation & Logistics sector. However, the truckload carriers should navigate the revisions well as the full truckload rate cycle gains momentum with help from the full implementation of electronic logging devices in mid-December, Ossenbeck tells investors in a research note. His upgrade of Hub Group to Overweight reflects his preference to add full truckload rate exposure at a "reasonable valuation." Further, the company's diverse business model should continue beating expectations in 2020, contends the analyst, who notes that Hub is now his top SMID cap idea. Ossenbeck's downgrade of Echo is based on expectations for continued margin compression in 2020 from its increasing tech investments and narrowing contract/spot spreads. His downgrade of CSX is based on valuation after the company's "tremendous run." The analyst's top rail pick remains Norfolk Southern (NSC).

The analyst's estimates remain below management's long-term earnings target and consensus in fiscal 2021 as he anticipates a slower sell-through of owned inventory. The delayed sell-through is likely to also postpone any free cash flow inflection and raise Hilton Grand Vacations' earnings risk in the near term in the event of any macro deterioration, contends Grambling. Bernstein bullish on Hilton, initiates with an Outperform
As previously reported, Bernstein analyst Richard Clarke started coverage of Hilton with an Outperform rating and $108 price target. The analyst believes asset-light hotel model is a "fantastic business model," enabling fast growth, high returns and high cash generation. A recent valuation pullback and "misdiagnosed" cyclical fears provide a rare attractive entry point, he contends.

Hilton initiated with an Outperform at BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst Ari Klein initiated coverage of Hilton Worldwide Holdings with an Outperform rating and $104 price target. The analyst views Hilton as one of the best positioned lodging companies, citing its "rapidly" growing loyalty program, and "durable" fee-based business model that he believes can sustain 10%-15% earnings growth. While weakening economic conditions can weigh on its RevPAR, Hilton's fee growth is supported by a strong development pipeline, says the analyst.

Freeport McMoRan upgraded to Sector Perform at RBC Capital on copper view
As previously reported, RBC Capital analyst Sam Crittenden upgraded Freeport McMoRan to Sector Perform and raised his price target to $14 from $12. The analyst says he is turning more "cautiously optimistic" on copper heading into 2020 and believes the stock could follow that rally. Crittenden adds that while risks around the transition to block caving at Grasberg remain, some "solid progress" has been made thus far.

Freeport McMoRan upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS
UBS analyst Andreas Bokkenheuser upgraded Freeport McMoRan to Buy from Neutral with a price target of $12, down from $13. The analyst believes the market is overly focused on lower near-term copper prices versus the company's growth trajectory. Bokkenheuser, who lowered his copper estimates, believes Freeport is oversold at current share levels. The company's "disproportionally high" gold exposure and 10% annual production growth should drive outperformance relative to peers, contends the analyst.

The company's installation business should benefit from recent improved volumes in residential U.S. construction and potentially improved price stability, McGrath tells investors in a research note. Further, its roofing business could see some upside in upcoming quarters from better weather as well as any higher storm activity in late 2019 and early 2020, adds the analyst.
