ServiceNow new CEO well-suited for next growth phase, says Cowen
Cowen analyst J. Derrick Wood noted ServiceNow (NOW) announced its CEO would be leaving to be CEO of Nike (NKE) and that ex-SAP (SAP) CEO Bill McDermott will take his place. The company also preannounced its Q3 results, beating estimates on billings growth and raising guidance on the high-end. The analyst noted the CEO change was a surprise but he believes McDermott's skill set should be well-suited for the company's next growth phase. Wood reiterated his Outperform rating and $315 price target on ServiceNow shares.

ServiceNow stock price attractive following aftermarket decline, says UBS
UBS analyst Jennifer Lowe is keeping her Buy rating and $232 price target on ServiceNow (NOW) after the stock fell afterhours yesterday on the news that its CEO John Donahoe is leaving for a CEO post at Nike (NKE). The analyst notes that the company also pre-announced Q3 ahead of consensus while its FY19 outlook indicates no change to Q4 guidance. Lowe adds that although ServiceNow is faced with new CEO transition risk, the former SAP CEO Bill McDermott is also "seasoned", and the stock is "attractive" at a 29-times enterprise value to expected 2020 free cash flow.

Macquarie a buyer of ServiceNow, says Bill McDermott a 'huge win'
Macquarie analyst Sarah Hindlian says that while she understands the uncertainty in ServiceNow shares around the departure of John Donahoe and the lack of a CFO appointment, she thinks the preliminary results "spoke volumes against the bear case." Further, the analyst sees incoming CEO Bill McDermott "as one of the best executives available in enterprise software." McDermott is a "huge win," contends Hindlian, who is a buyer of ServiceNow shares into today's conference call. She has a Buy rating on the stock with a $335 price target.

ServiceNow shares may remain range-bound, says Jefferies
While ServiceNow's preliminary Q3 results beat subscriber billings expectations, the implied Q4 subscription revenue and billings guidance were both below consensus, Jefferies analyst Samad Samana tells investors in a research note. The analyst is not sure the Q3 results will be enough to drive shares higher in the near-term given the implied Q4 guidance, the uncertainty created by ServiceNow's leadership changes, and concerns facing high-growth software. However, he sees Bill McDermott as a "solid" CEO hire given his "successful track record in enterprise software." Samana keeps a Buy rating on ServiceNow shares with a $330 price target.

Morgan Stanley downgrades Caterpillar, sees 2020 declines for two biggest units
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Courtney Yakavonis downgraded Caterpillar to Equal Weight from Overweight with a price target of $145, down from $150. She believes that the U.S. Construction Equipment market peaked in 2019 and that Energy & Transportation, or E&T, markets will fail to re-accelerate in 2020, leading Yakavonis to now expect negative growth in the company's two largest business segments in 2020 as well as less upside in Resources. Her sales and EPS estimates are 4% and 2%, respectively, below consensus, and her updated estimates now call for a mild year-over-year earnings decline in 2020, Yakavonis tells investors.

Caterpillar price target lowered to $149 after dealer survey at Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Jamie Cook said 35% of Caterpillar dealers surveyed by the firm cited risks, albeit modest, to full year estimates, while the rest reiterated prior forecasts calling for demand to be flat to up 5%. In the U.S., used pricing remains fairly stable and dealer inventory is slightly elevated in certain regions, Cook said he found. For 2020, however, the outlook is now seen as worse, projected to be down 5%-10% compared to last quarter's forecast of flat to down 5%, the analyst noted. He lowered his FY19-FY21 EPS forecasts in response to the further deterioration in the survey results and weaker industrial data more broadly, causing him to cut his price target for Caterpillar shares to $149 from $165. Cook keeps an Outperform rating on Caterpillar.

KeyBanc makes four Semiconductor rating changes after trip to Asia
KeyBanc analyst Weston Twigg made four rating changes in the Semiconductors space after his quarterly trip to Asia revealed overall demand trends, while still weak, "are not getting worse." The analyst was encouraged to find inventories are beginning to normalize and that expectations are for normal seasonality in Q4. As a result, he upgraded Analog Devices (ADI), Microchip (MCHP), and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) to Overweight from Sector Weight. Conversely, the China insourcing trends at Huawei and other manufacturers are accelerating faster than Twigg had expected, which results in his downgrade of Xilinx (XLNX) to Sector Weight from Overweight. The analyst also recommends building long-term positions in semi-cap and memory stocks like KLA-Tencor (KLAC), Teradyne (TER), Micron Technology (MU), MKS Instruments (MKSI), Entegris (ENTG), Applied Materials (AMAT) and Lam Research (LRCX). Lastly, Twigg says that initial demand for Apple's (AAPL) new iPhone "appears to be slightly worse than expected."

NXP becoming key supplier of EV battery management systems, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach said his checks suggest that NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) is beginning to win business in battery management systems for electric vehicles against incumbents Analog Devices (ADI) and Maxim Integrated (MXIM), which he sees as a key development. BMS could add 200 basis points to the company's growth rate in autos and evidence of success in this area and other new growth drivers like Ultra-wide band and crossover MCUs should "translate directly into multiple expansion" for NXP shares, said Hettenbach. He keeps an Overweight rating and $115 price target on the stock.

NXP Semiconductor (NXPI) was not specifically called out in the teardown, but chips are still being identified and he believes the company is well positioned to maintain some presence in the iPhone 11, Svanberg added. PayPal leads among P2P providers, app share remains stable, says UBS
UBS analyst Eric Wasserstrom is keeping his Neutral rating and $120 price target on PayPal as part of his broader research note into U.S. Payment Networks. The analyst states that his most recent UBS Evidence Lab Mobile Banking App Download data suggests that mobile payment apps continue to gain market share relative to the traditional banking apps, and within that category, remittance apps continue to lose share vs. P2P apps like Venmo. Wasserstrom adds that PayPal - while challenged by newer entrants like Square Cash - is still maintaining its leading position in P2P. The analyst maintains however that Venmo's contribution to PayPal's revenue and earnings is already reflected in the stock's premium multiple relative to its historical levels.

Stifel downgrades Southwest on risk of deal to lessen Boeing dependency
Stifel analyst Joseph DeNardi downgraded Southwest Airlines (LUV) to Hold from Buy with a price target of $60, down from $75. The stock in morning trading is up 7c to $53.55. Southwest is an all Boeing (BA) 737 airline, which makes its business model dependent on 737s, DeNardi tells investors in a research note. Southwest's decision to remove the 737 MAX from its schedule through early February, a "deteriorating" relationship between the Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing, and reports that Boeing may be looking at a 737 MAX rate cut indicate that Southwest "may be nearing a tipping point" where the duration of the MAX grounding pushes it to consider more significant and strategic solutions, including acquisitions, DeNardi contends. The analyst believes an acquisition by Southwest motivated by a desire to diversify away from the MAX "creates significant risks" in the near term for the company. DeNardi today also upgraded shares of JetBlue Airways (JBLU) to Buy from Hold.

JetBlue could be worth $28 in a takeout scenario, says Stifel
Stifel analyst Joseph DeNardi upgraded JetBlue to Buy from Hold with a price target of $24, up from $22. In a research note to investors, DeNardi says that a prolonged grounding of Boeing's (BA) 737 MAX is an "existential threat" to Southwest's (LUV) business model and that the "only reasonable option" Southwest has to address this risk is through an acquisition of JetBlue or Alaska Air (ALK). When combined with JetBlue's attractive CASMx story into 2020, the analyst now sees the increased likelihood of M&A as presenting a sufficiently attractive risk/reward setup to justify an upgrade. JetBlue could be worth $28 in a takeout scenario, DeNardi says. The Stifel analyst downgraded Southwest to Hold from Buy.

Last month, Platts reported a 35% decline in Atlantic pellet premiums to $40/dmt, the analyst points out. The analyst estimates this reduction lowered Cleveland-Cliffs' sales margins by approximately $10/lt on an annual basis. Until we see a material improvement in steel mill economics, Atlantic pellet premiums pricing could stay at these current levels for the next several quarters, Pipes tells investors in a research note.
