PG&E deal talks report could drive renewed interest, says BofA/Merrill
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith noted that SparkSpread reported that Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BRK.A) was in talks to acquire bankrupt PG&E (PCG). However, CNBC subsequently reported that Berkshire had no interest, citing direct conversations with Warren Buffett, and a spokesperson also noted the company is not in talks with PG&E, noted the analyst. Still, he thinks headlines regarding the Berkshire interest could help drive renewed interest in PG&E from other large-cap entities, adding that "for all of the same reasons why we see credibility to a potential Berkshire bid, much of the same applies to any other large buyer." Dumoulin-Smith keeps No Rating on PG&E shares given ongoing Chapter 11 proceedings.

Axalta Coating under pressure to deliver on M&A, says Citi
Citi analyst P.J. Juvekar said Axalta is under increased pressure "to deliver on M&A now or risk its credibility" after the company announced it is exploring strategic options again after going through the same process in 2017. Previously the company had M&A negotiations with AkzoNobel (AKZOY) and briefly with Nippon Paints, though neither reached a deal, and this time it could approach new players like Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), which already owns roughly 10% of the company, or Sherwin-Williams (SHW), contends Juvekar. Axalta does not have architectural paint, which trades at high multiples compared to industrial paint, and he thinks a multiple range of 12x-13x, equating to a stock price in the mid-to-high $30 range, is possible in a deal, though "there is no guarantee that a deal would happen," Juvekar stated in a note to investor before the open.

KeyBanc analyst Brent Bracelin reported that he found a recent job posting indicating that Geico, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), plans to implement Workday (WDAY) Financials as its new ERP system. He view the Geico win, which also includes the use of Workday's Adaptive Insights planning software, as further validation of the increasing cloud financial momentum at the company. The analyst, who sees share gains across both HCM and ERP as the primary drivers of upside for Workday, has an Overweight rating and $235 price target on the shares.

Netflix downgraded to Underperform from Hold at Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin downgraded Netflix (NFLX) to Underperform from Hold without a price target. The streaming has consistently stated it will not have advertising, which will result in U.S. subscriber losses, Martin tells investors in a research note. She projects Netflix will lose 4M U.S. subs in 2020 at its premium priced tier of $9-$16 per month. The company must add a second, lower priced service to compete with Disney+ (DIS), Apple+ (AAPL), Hulu, CBS All Access (VIAC) and NBC's Peacock (CMCSA), each of which have $5-$7 per month choices, contends Martin. The analyst, who believes Netflix's balance sheet "cannot withstand lower revenue," recommends a six-to-minute per hour ad load to supplement a $5-$7 monthly consumer fee. She does not think the company's international subscriber growth can support its valuation and would find the stock more attractive around $260. Netflix closed Monday down $4.85 to $302.50.

Roku price target raised to $200 from $150 at Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin raised her price target on Roku to $200 and kept her Buy rating, saying the company's promising aggregation platform economics in 2019 will be followed with accelerated subscription SVOD revenues in 2020. The analyst sees Roku as a "key beneficiary" with an installed base of 32M connected-TV homes in the U.S. as Disney+, Apple+, Peacock, and HBOMax streaming services accelerate customer acquisition spending. Martin adds that the company should be valued as an "internet aggregator" comparable to YouTube in the video space.

HSBC downgrades AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Altice USA to Hold
HSBC analyst Sunil Rajgopal downgraded to Hold from Buy shares of AT&T (T), Verizon Communications (VZ), T-Mobile (TMUS) and Altice USA (ATUS). The analyst's only Buy in US Telecoms is now Comcast (CMCSA). Rajgopal keeps Reduce ratings on both Dish (DISH) and Sprint (S). The "evolving content business model" and increasing competition leads the analyst to be more cautious on the pay-TV business and operators with greater exposure to content revenues. Producers are increasingly distributing their content directly to consumers rather than relying on the cable and satellite aggregators, Rajgopal tells investors in a research note. In addition, the entry of a "well-funded" companies like Apple (AAPL) into content production and distribution "with its low sticker price adds to the concerns," contends the analyst. Rajgopal cut his pay-TV subscriber estimates for Comcast, AT&T, Charter and Altice USA to reflect his more cautious stance. The analyst lowered his price target for Altice USA to $28 from $30, raised his price target for AT&T to $42 from $38, raised his price target for Verizon to $65 from $62, and kept an $86 price target on T-Mobile.

JPMorgan bullish on European oil stocks, sees demand 4% by 2040
Despite energy efficiency improvements in the West, global energy consumption is expected to continue to grow, led by Asia, JPMorgan analyst Christyan Malek tells investors in a research note. The analyst, who believes decarbonizing will be "far harder than current consensus assumes," estimates oil demand will be 4% higher than current levels by 2040, with demand growth peaking during 2035 through 2040. Amidst this backdrop, Malek has turned bullish on oil equities. The analyst's top pick is Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) and he reiterates an Overweight rating on BP (BP). Malek today upgraded Total (TOT) to Overweight from Neutral as he believes the company is best placed to reduce its own emissions intensity from core businesses and products and capture new sources of global energy demand growth. Malek also upgraded Equinor (EQNR) to Neutral from Underweight and following a period of restriction, moved to an Underweight from Neutral on Eni SpA (ENI) and Overweight rating on OMV AG (OMVKY).

In a period of slower economic growth, Selesky says the elevated debt is a disadvantage and sees the company's less leveraged peers as better positioned in managing potentially lower energy prices. The analyst also lowers his FY19 and FY20 EPS views on BP by 38c and 40c to $2.94 and $3.38 respectively.

Time to dismiss Solid Biosciences as Sarepta competitor, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Danielle Brill says that while she had dismissed Solid Biosciences' (SLDB) microdystophin gene therapy program as a competitive threat to Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT), some investors worried that Solid could provide compelling data after adjusting protocol and moving up the dose. However, today's report of another clinical hold confirms that Solid's construct is toxic, indicating that Pfizer's (PFE) may to too, Brill tells investors in a research note. The analyst points out that both Solid and Pfizer use AAV9 and have had complement mediated serious adverse events after dosing just a few patients. Solid's program reaffirms her view that Sarepta's safety profile is differentiated. It is unlikely that the competition "is viable, let alone will ever catch up," says Brill. She keeps an Overweight rating on Sarepta Therapeutics with a $185 price target. The stock in midday trading is up 4% to $99.02 while Solid Biosciences is down 71% to $3.22.

The analyst also says Intellia's lead gene editing program, NTLA-2001 has "really good" primate data showing TTR knockdown potentially better than Alnylam's (ALNY) patisiran. He expects the market will already start to impute downstream clinical benefit for NTLA-2001 after only a few patients with initial TTR knockdown data, because of the collective data for Ionis Pharmaceuticals' (IONS) inotersen and Alnylam's patisiran showing knockdown is relevant.

Alphabet upgraded to Buy at Stifel on forecast for durable growth
As previously reported, Stifel analyst Scott Devitt upgraded Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG) to Buy from Hold with a price target of $1,525, up from $1,325. He is also encouraged by Google's continued share gains of advertising dollars and sees a runway for healthy revenue growth, leading him to raise his long-term Properties revenue estimates. Devitt additionally said he views the streamlining of the management structure - with Sundar Pichai now the CEO of both Google and Alphabet - as a positive for investors. Though it is too early to determine what changes, if any, Pichai will bring to the Other Bets portfolio, the analyst thinks Pichai will keep investors in mind when considering the long-term portfolio objectives.

Jefferies small business survey points to 'more love' for internet leaders
Jefferies analyst Brent Thill said his survey of 600+ small-to-mid-size businesses indicated that 64% of respondents advertise on Facebook (FB), 50% on Google (GOOGL) and 43% on Instagram. However, usage of advertising on Amazon (AMZN) and Twitter (TWTR) improved in this year's survey compared to last year, noted Thill. When asked where they planned to allocate more ad dollars, 46% and 45% of SMBs pointed to plans to spend more on Facebook and Google, which Thill characterized as "more love for the leaders." Smaller ad businesses, such as Pinterest (PINS) and Snap (SNAP), were not as popular with SMBs, though this highlights a potential opportunity, added the analyst. The survey also showed that Intuit (INTU) leads the SMB market for accounting software, while the most popular web site builders are GoDaddy (GDDY) and Wix (WIX), but Thill believes all three remain underpenetrated. He continues to identify Facebook, Alphabet, Amazon, Wix, Intuit and GoDaddy as top internet picks.

Credit Suisse upgrades Raytheon ahead of merger, boosts target to $230
Credit Suisse analyst Robert Spingarn upgraded Raytheon (RTN) to Outperform from Neutral and raised his price target for the shares to $230 from $188. The analyst believes United Technologies' (UTX) aerospace businesses are undervalued and that the market has yet to appropriately discount Raytheon's ~43.1% ownership of the proposed combined entity. Further, as standalone entity, Raytheon has very little net debt, which is a "significant positive" in the context of the pending merger with United Technologies' aerospace businesses, Spingarn tells investors in a research note.

United Technologies price target raised to $169 from $150 at Cowen
Cowen analyst Cai von Rumohr raised his price target on United Technologies (UTX) to $169 from $150 citing its sum-of-the-parts value, margin upturns at its Pratt & Otis subsidiaries, and the proposed synergies the Raytheon (RTN) merger offers to further enhance upside. von Rumohr reiterated his Outperform rating on United Technologies shares.
