Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. VMware (VMW) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo with analyst Philip Winslow saying investors have been concerned that growing interest in deploying containerized applications into Kubernetes-centric environments will eventually reduce customer demand for VMware's virtualization-centric product portfolio. 3. Tradeweb Markets (TW) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Barclays with analyst Jeremy Campbell saying recent weakness in the shares "seems largely technical," which presents an "attractive upside opportunity." 4. Scotts Miracle-Gro (SMG) upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at BofA/Merrill with analyst Christopher Carey saying the bar on the company's earnings consensus may be "too low." 5. Philip Morris (PM) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill with analyst Lisa Lewandowski citing the suspended merger discussions with Altria (MO) amid the heightened risk for U.S. vaping category following reports of lung health concerns. Citi 'getting much more bullish' on cigarettes, upgrades Altria to Buy
Citi analyst Adam Spielman upgraded Altria Group to Buy from Neutral with a price target of $60, up from $47. It is becoming hard to argue that "tobacco is being disrupted," Spielman tells investors in a research note. He believes investors will start to care less about "reduced risk products" and points out that traditional tobacco companies have fallen to price-to-earnings multiples last seen when litigation meant bankruptcy was a realistic prospect. As a result, Spielman is "getting much more bullish on the cigarette companies." He upgraded Altria Group while downgrading Philip Morris (PM) to Neutral with an unchanged price target to $90.

Boeing production halt should be end of negative news, says Jefferies
Last night's 737 MAX production halt announcement should be the end of the negative news flow for Boeing, Jefferies analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu tells investors in a research note. The analyst keeps a Buy rating on the shares with a $420 price target. The stock in premarket trading is down $4.60 to $322.40. The halt creates continued volatility given uncertainty on the return to service, says the analyst. However, Kahyaoglu still targets over $30 per share of free cash flow in 2022. She estimates $18.30 per share of free cash flow in 2020, climbing to $27.90 in 2021 and $30.80 in 2022.

Boeing price target lowered to $370 from $400 at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Seth Seifman lowered his price target for Boeing to $370 from $400 after the company announced the 737 Max production halt. The announcement leaves many questions unanswered but that was probably inevitable, given the difficulty of forecasting how the aircraft will return, Seifman tells investors in a research note. The analyst expects the halt to be "fairly short term," perhaps a few months, and keeps an Overweight rating on Boeing shares. He estimates that Boeing is burning nearly $2B per month on the MAX, "but this will not drop to zero during the halt."

Boeing Street free cash flow estimates too high, says Baird
Baird analyst Peter Arment Said the Boeing production halt was expected but believes the Street's free cash flow estimates remain too high. He said with a significant working capital drain, the production halt decision will allow for less finished goods stacking up ad it is considered easier to cut production than it is to force the supply chain to cut and then ramp it back up again. Arment maintained his Neutral rating and lowered his price target to $322 from $342 on Boeing shares.

She notes that ~70% of units from Amazon's third party business are Fulfilled by Amazon and the rest is seller-fulfilled. The analyst keeps an Outperform rating and $168 price target on FedEx shares.

General Electric (GE) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS with analyst Markus Mittermaier saying the shares are at a "positive inflection point" into 2020 given GE's successful de-levering, "strong" estimated earnings growth in 2020 and 2021, and a tripling of free cash flow to $2.3B next year led by Aviation and Healthcare. 3. Morgan Stanley cuts UPS, FedEx price targets on growing Amazon risk
Morgan Stanley analyst Ravi Shanker estimates Amazon (AMZN) is delivering 46% of U.S. packages bought on its platform through Amazon Logistics, its in-house logistics operation, and he believes "AMZNL" is already shipping at a run rate of over 2.5B packages annually in the U.S. as of August. He also continues to believe that a Third-Party Logistics offering is coming from the e-commerce giant, Shanker tells investors. Contrary to what he views as the general investor perception that Amazon is still in the very early stages of building out its logistics network, Shanker thinks "the already large and quick ramp of AMZNL represent a large opportunity-loss" and competitive risk for the parcel carrying leaders. He lowered his price target on UPS (UPS) to $78 from $85 and keeps an Underweight rating on the shares while trimming his FedEx (FDX) target to $111 from $120 and maintaining an Equal Weight rating on the stock.

Piper analysis shows Q4 subscriber upside for Netflix
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says the combination of his preliminary "Netflix Navigator" search index and YouTube trailer analysis point to Q4 subscriber addition upside for both domestic and international. Specifically, the preliminary search index analysis suggests Q4 domestic subscriber growth of 6.0% year-over-year, above the consensus estimate of 4.8%, and international growth of 30.9%, above the consensus of 29.9%. Further, through the first two months of the quarter, the number of U.S. YouTube trailer views for "major" Netflix originals is up 3% year-over-year compared to Q4 of last year, which signals a more engaging content slate, contends Olson. The analyst expects Netflix will continue to capture a "significant portion" of traditional content dollars as they migrate to streaming "despite an onslaught of new streaming services." Olson keeps an Overweight rating on Netflix with a $400 price target.

JPMorgan says Irishman views likely below expected, but Netflix slate 'strong'
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth noted that Netflix announced during an investor conference presentation that 26.4M accounts watched "The Irishman" over its first seven days, which he thinks is likely below expectations but also impacted by the film's 3.5 hour viewing time. He expects viewership to build over the quarter, noting that Netflix said it expects about 40M viewers of the film over the first 28 days of release. Netflix released Marriage Story on Dec. 6, which has generated strong buzz and is also an awards contender, and its late-December content slate is "strong," added Anmuth. The analyst, who believes Netflix's fourth quarter subscriptions have "historically been very back-end weighted," has an Overweight rating on the stock.

Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. JPMorgan (JPM) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Keefe Bruyette with analyst Brian Kleinhanzl saying JPMorgan has been a strong performer in 2019 and remains best in class in terms of quality, but investors should own stocks where consensus earnings estimates have the potential to rise. 3. McCormick (MKC) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst Adam Samuelson saying with the shares having substantially outperformed peers over the past two years, rallying 63% versus the peer group at 5%, and valuation at or near all-time highs on both an absolute and relative basis, McCormick's risk/reward "appears uncompelling absent a notable acceleration in underlying revenue growth which appears unlikely." 4. CSX (CSX) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Citi with analyst Christian Wetherbee saying CSX has been a "great turnaround and earnings growth story" over the last three years, but as headwinds build in 2020, there is "real risk" to year-over-year earnings growth. 5. Ventas (VTR) downgraded to Underperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo with analyst Todd Stender saying he appreciates the REIT's diversification across medical office, life science, and hospitals, but he expects its senior housing exposure which accounted for 57% of revenue in the most recent quarter to determine share performance. Netflix downgraded to Underperform from Hold at Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin downgraded Netflix (NFLX) to Underperform from Hold without a price target. The streaming has consistently stated it will not have advertising, which will result in U.S. subscriber losses, Martin tells investors in a research note. She projects Netflix will lose 4M U.S. subs in 2020 at its premium priced tier of $9-$16 per month. The company must add a second, lower priced service to compete with Disney+ (DIS), Apple+ (AAPL), Hulu, CBS All Access (VIAC) and NBC's Peacock (CMCSA), each of which have $5-$7 per month choices, contends Martin. The analyst, who believes Netflix's balance sheet "cannot withstand lower revenue," recommends a six-to-minute per hour ad load to supplement a $5-$7 monthly consumer fee. She does not think the company's international subscriber growth can support its valuation and would find the stock more attractive around $260. Netflix closed Monday down $4.85 to $302.50.

McDonald's sees 7%-9% EPS growth target applying in 2020, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst John Glass said McDonald's informal meeting on Wednesday was an opportunity for investors to meet new CEO Chris Kempczinski and noted that he and CFO Keven Ozan spent "more time" explaining the comp challenges facing the industry and the brand than they did discussing comp and traffic goals for 2020. The leaders acknowledged the 4% comps and flat traffic goals for 2020 that have been discussed with franchisees, though they said those should not be viewed as "guidance," according to Glass. They also said they see the 7%-9% "normalized" EPS growth algorithm applying in 2020,albeit at the lower end, which Glass said is consistent with his estimates. The analyst maintains an Overweight rating and $214 price target on McDonald's shares.
