B. Riley FBR downgrades Cinemark and Marcus, cuts exhibitor targets
B. Riley FBR analyst Eric Wold revisited his exhibitor coverage heading into the "most important stretch" of the Q4 film slate, which will bring Frozen II, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to screens. However, with the quarter-to-date box office down 14.7%, the analyst now believes Q4 could be relatively flattish year-over-year versus consensus expectations for a mid-single-digit increase. As a result, he lowered his Q4 estimates for the group and believes the full-year 2019 box office could decline around 4.0%. Wold downgraded both Cinemark (CNK) and Marcus (MCS) to Neutral from Buy, saying short-term domestic box office movements are more likely to influence valuation decisions over the next 12-18 months. The analyst also lowered his price target for Buy-rated AMC Entertainment (AMC) to $15 from $19, for Buy-rated Imax (IMAX) to $30 from $34, and for Neutral-rated National CineMedia (NCMI) to $7.50 from $8.50.

Cantor sees over 66% chance of Constellation bidding for Canopy Growth
Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Pablo Zuanic is surprised it has taken this long for Constellation Brands (STZ) to appoint a new CEO at Canopy Growth (CGC) following the exit of Bruce Linton. Pundits trying to read the tea leaves could make arguments both pro and con regarding whether the probability of a bid for the entire company by Constellation has increased or not, Zuanic tells investors in a research note. For his part, the analyst thinks the probability of Constellation trying to acquire Canopy has increased. However, he admits it is not an easy strategic decision for Constellation given its balance sheet, likely mid- to high-teens earnings dilution from a deal for the 65% of Canopy it does not own, and likely near-term hit to its own share price. Nonetheless, Zuanic assigns a more than two-thirds probability to Constellation putting in a bid for all of the Canopy Growth equity in the near term. On the argument of an improving outlook for the cannabis industry, Constellation could justify a deal, contends the analyst, who has a Neutral rating on Canopy Growth with a C$18.90 price target.

Canopy Growth, Aurora Cannabis profitability hard to achieve, MKM Partners says
MKM Partners analyst Bill Kirk remains cautious on Canadian Cannabis producers, saying that consensus expectations are still "high as a kite". The analyst notes that the sector has recently rebounded to "prior earnings level share prices", but believes that the assumption of "massive revenue growth with hardly any absolute cost growth" embedded in consensus is "very unlikely". Kirk cites fresh signs of cracks in the Canada market - namely that pricing is down, gaps to illicit aren't closing, and consumption per federal license is contracting - which suggests that the near-term path to profitability looks challenged. Kirk keeps his Neutral rating and CAD23 price target on Canopy Growth (CGC) and Sells rating with CAD3 price target on Aurora (ACB).

Stifel lays out 'path to profits' for Peloton, Lyft, Uber, RealReal and Wayfair
Stifel analyst Scott Devitt said that "in the heat of the recent IPO cycle" investors had been focused on growth at all costs, but now the market pendulum has swung to "demand a clear path to profits for consumer internet companies." In his note to investors, Devitt laid out the "path to profits" he sees for the five recent IPOs that are caught in the "current storm" that he currently recommends with Buy ratings: Peloton (PTON), Lyft (LYFT), Uber (UBER), The RealReal (REAL), and Wayfair (W). On Peloton, he said he is bullish on the margin upside opportunity and the company's ability to achieve its FY24 EBITDA margin target due to underlying core profitability in U.S. Bikes, its rapid subscriber growth, and the company's "healthy" subscription unit economics. On Lyft, Devitt cited rapidly improving fundamentals and a more disciplined environment as reasons he is comfortable with the margin opportunity and the company's ability to achieve its 4Q:21 adjusted EBITDA profitability target. On Uber, he sees the path to profitability supported by modest expansion of Rides margin from the current 5% level along with some take rate improvement and efficiencies in sales and marketing. For RealReal, Devitt expects the company to modestly reduce inbound process costs through technology innovation and believes a long-term mid-20% adjusted EBITDA margin target "is attainable." On Wayfair, Devitt is comfortable with the company's 8%-10% adjusted EBITDA margin long-term target, but he is taking a more conservative approach to his margin trajectory and reduced his price target to $110 from $120. The analyst now expects breakeven for Wayfair in 2023.

The analyst continues to believe Canopy and Cronos look best positioned. Both companies have strong cash positions to facilitate growth and have good visibility on key strategic priorities, Lavery tells investors in a research note. The analyst cut his estimates for Tilray, but he keeps an Overweight rating on the shares as he still sees growth potential in both Europe and the U.S. Lavery believes Aurora lacks visibility on key strategic growth priorities and he keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. BofA says Mexico cannabis legalization 'still in play' in 2020 after extension
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Christopher Carey noted that Mexico's Supreme Court has granted an extension until April 30, 2020 for Congress to legalize all forms of cannabis, writing in its decision that considering the complexity of the issue it grants the extension "exceptionally and for one time only." He views this as an important development for the industry since, in addition to opening a potentially large market, it will put even more pressure on U.S. federal action as the country will potentially "place the US between 2 of only 3 countries in the world to have legalized cannabis for recreational use." 9% of Mexico's population of 131M is estimated to have consumed cannabis in 2018 and the legal market could be worth $1B by 2024, according to BDS Analytics, noted Carey. Publicly traded companies in the cannabis space include Aphria (APHA), Aurora Cannabis (ACB), CV Sciences (CVSI), CannTrust Holdings (CNTTF), Canopy Growth (CGC), Cronos Group (CRON), General Cannabis (CANN), India Globalization Capital (IGC), Tilray (TLRY) and Trulieve Cannabis (TCNNF).

BofA lowers cannabis stock price targets on further sales estimate changes
Following yesterday's rally in cannabis stock's driven by Aphria's (APHA) earnings, BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Christopher Carey said he doesn't see a case for sustainable upside yet until consensus estimates are cut further, which he thinks will ensue with the calendar Q3 results from the group. The reason that industry sales could be flat to down quarter-over-quarter sector-wide is that the cannabis industry is going from a period of inventory build to one of inventory "de-load," said Carey. Given his sales estimate revisions, he has lowered his price target on Aurora Cannabis (ACB) shares to $5 from $6, cut his Canopy Growth (CGC) price target to $23 from $27, trimmed his Cronos Group (CRON) target to $13 from $16 and decreased his Hexo (HEXO) target to $2 from $2.50. Jefferies survey shows plant-based meat market can reach $15B in 10 years
Jefferies analyst Kevin Grundy says his firm's survey 1,800 U.S. consumers supports his view that the U.S. plant-based meat market can expand at a 25% annually to $15B over the next 10 years. The survey suggests "ample scope" for plant-based meat penetration and frequency rates to rise, and an attractive demographic skew toward millennials and generation Z, with restaurants a major access point for younger consumers, Grundy tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes Beyond Meat (BYND) will be a key beneficiary of the growth in the U.S. plant-based meat market. His 10-year model implies that plant-based meat reaches ~5% of the total U.S. meat market, which he notes is still well below plant-based dairy that comprises ~15% of the U.S. milk market. Grundy continues to view Beyond Meat "as perhaps the best growth story in Staples." However, even with the stock's recent pullback, the company's valuation at 10.5 times sales "sets a high bar," contends the analyst. As such, he keeps a Hold rating on Beyond Meat shares.

BTIG questions if Beyond Meat could supply McDonald's P.L.T. rollout in U.S.
BTIG analyst Peter Saleh wonders if Beyond Meat (BYND) could supply enough product should McDonald's want to expand its plant-based patty test throughout the U.S. Beyond could produce enough product in the near-to-medium term to supply McDonald's restaurants in Canada, Saleh told investors yesterday in a research note. However, the analyst is less convinced about the company's potential to support McDonald's U.S. system, especially if demand grows. McDonald's said yesterday morning that it is expanding the global test of its plant-based burger to include 52 restaurants in Southwestern Ontario. The P.LT., which stands for plant, lettuce and tomato, is made with a Beyond Meat plant-based patty that has been crafted exclusively by McDonald's. Saleh estimates that at least a 5% sales mix would be required to justify making P.L.T. a permanent menu item or expanding the item to the majority of McDonald's Canada's 1,480 units. In the U.S., he believes McDonald's would require at least a similar 5% sales mix to justify the effort. Beyond would need to produce 85M to 100M pounds of the plant-based product to support all 13,900 U.S. locations, the analyst wrote. Assuming the product was introduced nationwide in North America, he believes Beyond would need to produce 95M-115M pounds of product annually, or more than three-times Beyond Meat's food service capacity run-rate for 2019. Saleh has a Buy rating on McDonald's with a $240 price target and does not rate shares of Beyond Meat, which are up 6% to $86.65 in afternoon trading.

Beyond Meat shares could be worth $130 with McDonald's deal, says Bernstein
Beyond Meat's (BYND) public float has increased to 65% of shares outstanding after the lock-up expiry versus 15% at the initial public offering, which makes the shares more investable now, Bernstein analyst Alexia Howard tells investors in a research note. The stock's risk/reward is skewed towards the upside, especially if plant-based meat becomes more price competitive versus regular meat as African Swine Fever in China drives global protein prices up, contends Howard. She believes a key question is whether McDonald's (MCD) will partner with Beyond Meat in the U.S., and that such an event could add $168M, or 60%, to Beyond Meat's fiscal 2019 sales guidance of $265M-$275M. The analyst thinks the fair multiple for Beyond Meat is 8 to 10 times sales. This implies a fair value of $84 to $104 per share in her base case and $105 to $130 per share assuming the McDonald's partnership materializes. Howard keeps an Outperform rating on Beyond Meat with a $106 price target. The stock closed Tuesday up $9.30, or 12%, to $83.89.
