American Eagle downgraded to Hold from Buy at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Laura Champine downgraded American Eagle to Hold from Buy with a price target of $15, down from $20, also lowering her FY19 and FY20 EPS views by 17c and 27c to $1.47 and $1.34 respectively. The analyst cites her forecast of continued expense pressure and "slightly weaker sales", cutting her Q3 SSS estimates to 1% from 3% and adding that while its Aerie and AE's Curvy jeans lines still offer potential, the levels of promotional activity at American Eagle and its competing brands cannot be ignored.

Abercrombie & Fitch shares still 'too cheap to ignore,' says Citi
Citi analyst Paul Lejuez says Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) shares remain "too cheap to ignore" following the company's in-line Q3 results. Abercrombie is "holding its own in a difficult retail environment" and the weakness at Hollister seems transitory, Lejuez tells investors in a research note. "Eventually another company will take notice," adds the analyst, who believes American Eagle (AEO) makes the most sense as an acquirer of Abercrombie. The analyst keeps a Buy rating on the latter.

American Eagle price target lowered to $16 from $18 at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Kate Fitzsimons lowered her price target on American Eagle to $16 and kept her Sector Perform rating after its in-line Q3 earnings and below-consensus Q4 guidance, saying the outlook for downside in comps and margins is driven by execution issues in Tops and subsequent markdown pressures. The analyst adds that her neutral stance is based on the expectation that incremental wins and high-single-digit margins will be "harder to achieve".

Retail store traffic worsened in third week of December, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger said her checks on specialty retail and department stores' traffic showed that it decelerated to a decline of 10.7% year-over-year in the third week of December, leaving her to lower her estimate of the Q4 to-date result to down 7.4% year-over-year. Traffic appeared "solid" during her store checks at the end of December week four, but a tough comparison to last year in week five leaves her "overall cautious" on the traffic view for the month, Greenberger tells investors. Looking at specific retailers, Greenberger said she found that clearance levels ticked slightly higher year-over year at only Kohl's (KSS) and L Brands' (LB) Victoria's Secret, ,while post-Christmas clearance moderated at Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) and Macy's (M) compared to last year. She also found that clearance depth increased year-over-year for both of Tapestry's (TPR) Coach and Kate Spade brands.

Abercrombie & Fitch initiated with a Neutral at DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst John Morris initiated Abercrombie & Fitch with a Neutral rating and $18 price target. The analyst said the company is still in the middle of a multi-year turnaround that is looking to reposition the brand with "quality, elevated fashion content to appeal to a more modern, sophisticated 20-something." While the analyst noted that this will take time, and is encouraged by Abercrombie's progress so far, he is cautious due to "competitive promotional environment" and would like to see more visibility on "the pace of the earnings recovery" before becoming more bullish on the name.

Zumiez price target raised to $38 from $34 at Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Janine Stichter said she finds that many of the larger retro and streetwear brands are seeing search interest track flat to down with weakened social media engagement, which she views as a signal that the the cycle is now past peak, although the category is still broadly healthy. Even with a fairly heavy reliance on Vans, Zumiez (ZUMZ) is sufficiently diverse to weather a deceleration in the retro cycle and data also suggests a major resurgence in skateboards, which is positive for Zumiez, said Stichter, who raised her price target on the stock to $38 from $34 and keeps a Buy rating on the shares. Despite the broader downtrend in the retro brand cycle, he checks also indicate that the Guess (GES) brand is "in the earlier stages of capitalizing on its status as a retro 90s brand," added Stichter.

Crocs checks show 'strong' demand for the brand, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Erinn Murphy says her channel checks in store and online during Q4 indicate "strong demand" for the Crocs brand. In addition, promotional activity has been lower year-over-year, pricing is 12.5% higher on the core Classic styles and newness has accelerated through Jibbitz and collaborations, Murphy tells investors in a research note. However, the analyst believes a number of North American e-commerce orders have been impacted given that the high demand has coincided with the company's new distribution channel. Murphy adds that while there is still likely upside to her 15% Q4 sales estimate, she wanted to flag that shipment delays could limit the magnitude of incremental flow through to the bottom line. The analyst remains comfortable with her Q4 earnings per share estimate for Crocs of 12c, which is double the consensus at 6c. Aaron's, Lowe's positioned for outperformance in 2020, says BofA
In a research note on retailers, BofA analyst Elizabeth Suzuki said she thinks the stocks that are best positioned for outperformance in 2020 are Aaron's (AAN), Advance Auto Parts (AAP), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Lowe's (LOW) and Tempur Sealy (TPX). Conversely, the analyst thinks several hardline retail stocks are poised to underperform in 2020, including Floor & Decor (FND), GameStop (GME), Michael's (MIK) and Sleep Number (SNBR). The firm's proprietary RENO barometer suggests that renovation spending may sequentially improve through 1H before tapering off in 2H. While she nots that essentially every company in her coverage universe stands to gain from a trade war resolution, the biggest beneficiaries would likely be Michael's, Floor & Decor, Best Buy (BBY), RH (RH) and Williams-Sonoma (WSM). Jefferies analyst Andy Barish said the firm's recent consumer survey and his multiyear analysis leads him to estimate that "better-positioned" quick-service restaurant operators, or QSRs, could see a 2%-3% contribution to same-store sales growth from plant-based "alt meats." He views Restaurant Brands' (QSR) Burger King, Dunkin' Brands (DNKN) and Del Taco (TACO) as best positioned among QSRs in terms of alt meats, but also thinks the broader Better For You trend and shift toward plant/veggie-forward eating is a driver for companies such as Noodles & Company (NDLS). He doesn't expect plant-based proteins to be as material an industry "disrupter" as digital and delivery, but does thinks these products can be material same-store sales drivers, but one that is largely already baked into the stocks, Barish concluded. He maintains Buy ratings on Noodles and Del Taco and Hold ratings on Restaurant Brands and Dunkin'.

Noodles & Company price target lowered to $13 from $15 at SunTrust
SunTrust analyst Jake Bartlett lowered his price target on Noodles & Co to $13 after its reported "flat" Q4 traffic and its outlook for Q1 being muted by severe weather. The analyst is keeping his Buy rating however and calls the 15% pullback in its stock price a "strong buying opportunity". Bartlett cites Noodles & Co's many sales and margins drivers that include a "new menu format launch in mid-May, building delivery momentum, and a rewards program and online ordering re-launch", adding that his forecast is for unit growth to accelerate to about 5% by 2020.

Jefferies upgrades Noodles & Company to Buy on confidence in SSS growth
Jefferies analyst Andrew Barish upgraded Noodles & Company to Buy from Hold with an unchanged price target of $11. The analyst says he has more confidence in the sustainability of the company's growth drivers for same-store-sales and margins, "particularly in terms of menu, price, and digital." Shares of Noodles & Company have not participated in the market and group rally, Barish tells investors in a research note. He believes the company's same-store-sales growth can continue for "many quarters to come" and thinks the prior "peak" EBITDA of $45M "is not out of sight" for 2020.

Noodles & Company same-sale-sales momentum continued in Q3, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Andy Barish believes Noodles & Company's same-store-sales momentum continued in Q3, with benefits from its menu board refresh, continued zoodles traction, caulifloodles launch, and the digital relaunch. The stock remains "depressed" by the private equity overhang and other factors, says the analyst, who continues to see an "attractive valuation for this small cap turnaround." He keeps a Buy rating on Noodles & Company with an $11 price target.

Goldman upgrades Party City to Buy ahead of expected second half momentum
Goldman Sachs analyst Christopher Prykull upgraded Party City Holdco to Buy from Neutral while lowering his price target for the shares to $8 from $10. While patience is required, the company offers a "deep value deleveraging story," Prykull tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes "better fundamental momentum" in the second half of 2019 should help ease concerns around the company's elevated financial leverage and e-commerce encroachment. This will be driven by a combination of licensing tailwinds, better Halloween timing, higher chocolate prices, improving wholesale growth, and a margin rebound, Prykull tells investors in a research note. The analyst still believes growing online adoption within the party good industry will continue to disrupt Party City's business, but he also sees "several mitigating factors." Further, the shares screen cheap relative to history, says Prykull.

Party City downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Christopher Prykull downgraded Party City to Neutral from Buy with a price target of $2.50, down from $7. The company's Q3 results illustrated that Halloween sales tailwinds failed to materialize, while helium headwinds persisted across sales and gross margin, Prykull tells investors in a research note. He says core Party City's fundamentals are eroding quicker than he anticipated. The analyst sees a "challenging path forward" for the company with limited visibility and a lack of a near-term catalysts for the shares other than valuation.

Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman maintained an Equal Weight rating on Party City (PRTY), but lowered his price target on shares to $3 from $5. The analyst said that Party City's 2019 Halloween sales, which were ~25% of its annual retail revenue, were "far worse than the market was prepared for," adding that he sees growing headwinds from increased competition and low near-term earnings visibility for the company.
