"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.
Disney's (DIS) animated movie "Onward" opened to a muted $40M from 4,310 locations in North America. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the film came in well behind projections overseas with an underwhelming $28M from 47 territories for a global bow of $68M. "Onward" sports an A- CinemaScore and an 86% Rotten Tomatoes.
BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal and Blumhouse's "The Invisible Man" fell to number two, grossing $15.15M from 3,610 theaters in its second weekend. Behind it was AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' "The Way Back," which debuted to $8.5M from 2,020 locations. ViacomCBS (VIAC) subsidiary Paramount's "Sonic the Hedgehog" placed number four, earning an estimated $8M for a domestic tally of $140.8M. Rounding out the top five, Disney's "The Call of the Wind" grossed another $7M for a North American total of $57.7M and $99.6M globally.
