The pair is up by over 5.5% from the low seen in January, and the yen is standing as the weakness currency on the year so far. BoJ Governor Kuroda last week pushed back against speculation that the central bank may widen the target yield band in its yield curve control policy, which is keeping the 10-year JGB yield pegged, with some wriggle room, near 0%. Kuroda said that the BoJ needs to keep the yield curve "stably low," though said policy will be assessed at the upcoming March policy review. The rootedness of JGB yields has seen differentials versus other sovereign yields tip markedly out of the currency's favour. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is showing a rise of nearly 70 bp on the year so far, at prevailing levels, compared to 10bp-odd yield rise that the 10-year JGB benchmark has seen. The BoJ has been implementing a yield curve control policy since 2016. Analysts expect USD-JPY will continue to trend higher.
