BTIG analyst Timothy Hayes initiated coverage of Apollo Commercial Real Estate with a Neutral rating and no price target. The analyst started the commercial mortgage real estate investment trust sector, saying that while headwinds exist to commercial real estate fundamentals, there are "several reasons to be constructive," especially with the sector trading at a discount to historical levels and offering "attractive" dividend yields at wide spreads to benchmark rates. Apollo Commercial is a "high-beta" stock that could potentially outperform commercial peers as the economic recovery accelerates, but its at-risk exposure is higher than peers, Hayes tells investors in a research note.

"Despite continued economic uncertainty, ARI had another solid quarter, producing operating earnings that covered the $0.35 per share quarterly dividend," said Stuart Rothstein, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Company. "Importantly, ARI achieved these results while maintaining a defensive capital position, ending the quarter with $450 million of liquidity after opportunistically using some excess liquidity to repurchase common stock. To date, ARI has repurchased $119.2 million of common stock at a price which is accretive to both operating earnings and book value per share."
