China Academy of…

China Academy of Information and Communications Technology disclosed that Apple shipments were flat month-over-month in April, which was better than the down 18% average seasonal downtick observed historically, as absolute monthly units "remained resilient" at 2.7M, JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. However, April did also mark the second straight year-over-year decline following five consecutive months of increases as the region moves into tougher comps relative to an easy compare for growth in Q1, says the analyst. Nonetheless, Chatterjee believes Apple continues to gain share in China even as momentum in the industry has slowed recently. He keeps an Overweight rating on the shares.

Bernstein analyst Toni…

Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi notes that the Apple iPhone 12 appears to be a strong cycle, with revenues increasing by 34% in the first half of 2021, and the analyst forecasting iPhone revenues will grow 35% for the full year on 17% unit growth. On many levels, the iPhone 12 cycle looks similar to the iPhone 6 cycle and iPhone X cycles - each introduced a compelling new offering, and enjoyed strong unit growth, high ASP growth, and outsized growth in China/APAC, he contends, adding that the iPhone 6 and 12 cycles also experienced strong gross margin improvement. However, Sacconaghi worries about what happened historically following these strong cycles. In the one year following the iPhone 6 and X cycles, iPhone ASPs declined, iPhone revenues declined double digits, and product gross margins declined notably, he points out. The analyst also highlights that Apple's stock also fared poorly, with a peak to trough drop of 32% following the 6 cycle and a 39% peak-to-trough drop following the iPhone X cycle.

Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani noted that smartphone data suggests iPhone units in China were down 27% year-over-year in the month of April, which marks a continued deceleration from March. However, Daryanani also noted that the previous two months of shipments in January and February were "up an impressive 160%" from the same two month period in 2019. While April data from China is "somewhat muted," the analyst expects growth to remain strong for Apple in its June-end quarter and beyond and maintains an Outperform rating and $175 price target on Apple shares.

Apple (AAPL), Google…

Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) are teaming up with Intel (INTC), Amazon Web Services (AMZN) and others to form the Semiconductors in America Coalition, Reuters' Stephen Nellis reports. The lobbying group has asked U.S. lawmakers to provide funding for the CHIPS for America Act, for which President Joe Biden has asked Congress to provide $50B. The group said in a letter to Democratic and Republican leaders in both houses of the U.S. Congress: "Robust funding of the CHIPS Act would help America build the additional capacity necessary to have more resilient supply chains to ensure critical technologies will be there when we need them." Bernstein analyst Toni…

Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi notes that Apple iPhone ASPs increased an estimated $170 year-over-year to $880-plus in Q2, the highest level since iPhone launched in 2008. By contrast, estimated iPhone unit sales were modestly below his forecast. The analyst believes a mix shift to Pro/ProMax models is driving strength in iPhone ASPs. Moreover, his analysis suggests that this mix shift was the principal driver of Apple's "stunning" 575 bps of year-over-year improvement in product gross margins in Q2. Sacconaghi also estimates that the mix of Pro/Pro Max models in Q2 may have been 2000 bps higher than a year ago. Further, his analysis suggests that margins are 1000 bps-plus higher than non-Pro Models, largely due to richer attach rates of storage/NAND, which generates up to 90% incremental gross margin. Average NAND upsell/attach could be $150 higher on Pro/Pro Max models versus Mini/iPhone 12, he adds.
