Following a recent Wall…

Following a recent Wall Street Journal article saying Qualcomm (QCOM) has increased lobbying efforts focused on allowing sales of chipsets into Huawei, KeyBanc analyst John Vinh says he thinks it is "highly likely" that the Trump Administration will ultimately grant a license to Qualcomm, as the company argues that if it does not receive a license, Huawei will buy chips from foreign competitors, namely MediaTek, implying that the current policy is unfairly impacting U.S. companies. Additionally, the Administration has shown restraint when a policy indicates negative impact on U.S. companies and the U.S. has already granted licenses to other companies, namely Intel (INTC), Micron (MU), and Xilinx (XLNX), Vinh contends, adding that as such he sees no compelling reason as to why Qualcomm would be excluded. Further, the analyst believes Huawei is working to develop Qualcomm chips into its flagship model, and estimates that granting an export license to Qualcomm would add an incremental $1.38B QCT revenue with 25M units shipped.

Samsung Electronics…

Samsung Electronics hosted its first-ever Galaxy Unpacked virtual event livestreamed from Korea to introduce a new suite of power devices. The company unveiled five devices, namely the Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Note20 Ultra; Tab S7 and S7+; Galaxy Watch3; Galaxy Buds Live; and Galaxy Z Fold2, the next generation foldable smartphone with enhanced refinements. "Never before have we relied on technology like we are today. It's how we are staying connected as we navigate the extraordinary challenges faced around the world," said Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. "Technology must make life easier, not more complex. That's why we have introduced five new power devices. Alone, these devices are powerful tools to help you maximize work and play. Together, as part of the Galaxy ecosystem, they work together seamlessly so you can spend your time focused on what matters most." The Galaxy Note20 series and Tab S7 series will be available in select markets starting August 21, 2020. The Galaxy Watch3 and Galaxy Buds Live are now available, the company noted.

Samsung (SSNLF) and Apple's (AAPL) assembly partners are among 22 companies that have pledged $1.5B of investments to set up mobile phone manufacturing units in India, Bloomberg's Kartik Goyal and Santosh Kumar report. Foxconn Technology, Wistron Corp. and Pegatron Corp., all iPhone assemblers, are among companies picked to make smartphones under a production-linked incentive plan, Ravi Shankar Prasad, minister for electronics and information technology, said at a press conference in New Delhi Saturday. The incentives are aimed at encouraging global companies to shift their manufacturing beyond China after a pandemic-induced trade war put the focus on the risks to supply chains, the authors note. Huawei shipped more…

Huawei shipped more smartphones worldwide than any other vendor for the first time in Q2 2020, according to a report from analyst firm Canalys. It marks the first quarter in nine years that a company other than Samsung (SSNLF) or Apple (AAPL) has led the market. Huawei shipped 55.8M devices, down 5% year on year. But second-placed Samsung shipped 53.7M smartphones, a 30% fall against Q2 2019. Huawei is still subject to US government restrictions, which have stifled its business outside of mainland China. Its overseas shipments fell 27% in Q2. But it has grown to dominate its domestic market, boosting its Chinese shipments by 8% in Q2, and it now sells over 70% of its smartphones in mainland China. China has emerged strongest from the coronavirus pandemic, with factories reopened, economic development continuing and tight controls on new outbreaks. "This is a remarkable result that few people would have predicted a year ago," said Canalys Senior Analyst Ben Stanton. "If it wasn't for COVID-19, it wouldn't have happened. Huawei has taken full advantage of the Chinese economic recovery to reignite its smartphone business. Samsung has a very small presence in China, with less than 1% market share, and has seen its core markets, such as Brazil, India, the United States and Europe, ravaged by outbreaks and subsequent lockdowns." Huawei suppliers include Micron Technology (MU) and Western Digital (WDC), while makers of optical components, including Acacia Communications (ACIA), NeoPhotonics (NPTN), Lumentum (LITE), and Finisar (IIVI), have previously reacted negatively to headlines regarding U.S. enforcement actions and allegations against China's Huawei. In addition, Qualcomm (QCOM) on Wednesday entered into a settlement agreement, as well as a new long-term, global patent license agreement with Huawei, including a cross license granting back rights to certain of Huawei's patents, covering sales beginning January 1, 2020. In Semiconductor segment,…

In Semiconductor segment, Samsung says Memory demand stayed solid from data centers and PC amid weak mobile demand as a result of the COVID-19 continuation, with the second half outlook forecasting mobile/graphic demand to recover backed by launches of new smartphones and game consoles. In Display Panel segment, Mobile revenue improved on a one-off gain despite weaker smartphone demand mainly in developed markets. In IT & Mobile Communications segment, Samsung says smartphone shipments and revenue fell sequentially in Q2 due to store closures and with 5G investment being delayed due to COVID-19. In the second half, Samsung sees the market showing a gradual demand recovery, though "intense competition" is likely to make up for a weak first half performance. Reference Link
