Sonos Radio could drive 'meaningfully higher' multiples, says Raymond James » 12:2604/2104/21/20
Sonos (SONO) this morning…
Sonos (SONO) this morning launched Sonos Radio, an ad-supported streaming radio service that will be available exclusively through the Sonos platform starting today, Raymond James analyst Adam Tindle tells investors in a research note. Investors have shown a willingness to ascribe "meaningfully higher valuation" multiples to platform approaches, so any sign of success for Sonos Radio would likely have positive implications for the company's shares, adds the analyst. Tindle points out that Sonos is essentially trading at parity with "commodity consumer hardware players" like GoPro (GPRO). This suggests Radio's potential rapid growth and high margin profit stream are "essentially a free option at these levels," contends the analyst, who keeps a Strong Buy rating on Sonos with a $19 price target.

Goldman Sachs analyst Rod…
Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall double downgraded Sonos to Sell from Buy with a price target of $7.50, down from $20. The analyst now expects a "severe reduction" in smart speaker demand, noting the company's products are generally at the top end of the pricing spectrum. Hall is concerned that the company's near term demand impact will be more material than current consensus expectations and that recovery will be slower in 2021.

BofA analyst John Babcock initiated coverage of Sonos with a Neutral rating and $15 price target. Sonos is well positioned relative to other smart home/consumer device companies as the company has demonstrated earnings stability in the face of competition and tariffs, Babcock tells investors in a research note. However, a Neutral rating is appropriate given the balance of potential near-term pressures and valuation, adds the analyst.
