Two months after buying… Two months after buying the failed lender, First Citizens just laid off about 500 Silicon Valley Bank employees, with almost all of the layoffs coming in SVB's commercial banking business, not its private wealth management group, Axios' Dan Primack reported, citing multiple sources. Catch up on the… Catch up on the weekend's top five stories with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Beijing on Sunday told Chinese companies that deal with critical information to stop purchasing products from Micron Technology (MU), the U.S.-based manufacturer of memory chips used in phones, computers and other electronics, The New York Times' Chang Che reports. Many analysts viewed the move as retaliation for Washington's efforts to cut off China's access to high-end chips. The Cyberspace Administration of China said that in a cybersecurity review it had found that the chip maker's products posed "relatively serious cybersecurity problems." The problems could "seriously endanger the supply chain of China's critical information infrastructure" and threaten national security, it said. 2. Instagram was down for thousands of users on Sunday, according to Downdetector.com. Over 180,000 users reported issues with accessing Meta Platform's (META) Instagram. 3. Banks have lost nearly $1T in deposits over the past year as money flowed into higher-yielding money-market funds. One company grabbing some of the cash is Apple as the iPhone maker recently launched a savings account with a 4.15% yield, 10 times the national average for banks, Carleton English writes in this week's edition of Barron's. Apple (AAPL) doesn't aspire to be a bank, but it's pushing deeper into financial services, aiming to generate extra income while keeping its one billion-plus iPhone users hooked on the Apple ecosystem. The company is expanding into payments with its Apple Pay service. It has built a credit-card business with Goldman Sachs Group (GS), its partner for the savings accounts, and it's muscling into buy now, pay later, facing off against companies like Affirm (AFRM), Block (SQ), and PayPal Holdings (PYPL). 4. Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's "Fast X" wont this weekend at the domestic box office with a $67.5M debut and $318.9M globally, after clearing $251.4M overseas. The movie's global opening is the second-best debut of 2023 behind another Universal title, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." 5. AB InBev (BUD) and CRH (CRH) saw positive mentions in this week's edition of Barron's. ShowHide Related Items >><< - 05/04/23
