The averages have been searching for direction in early trading as investors await clarity on the trade fight between the U.S. and China amid conflicting signals coming from the administration and from media reports. Over the weekend, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer called the 90 day truce with China a "hard deadline," but that seemed to conflict with statements about a soft deadline made by Larry Kudlow. About 50 minutes into the session, the S&P is down 9 points, or 0.33%, the Dow is down 134 points, or 0.55%, and the Nasdaq is up 19 points, or 0.27%.
