Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.
OPENING THIS WEEKEND: This weekend sees two major releases -- both sequels -- hitting theaters, Disney's (DIS) fantasy film "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" and Sony's (SNE) horror comedy "Zombieland: Double Tap." "Maleficent," starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, has already made $2.3M in Thursday night previews, and is expected to open in the $40M-$45M range. "Zombieland," with returning stars Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Jesse Eisenberg, earned $2.85M in Thursday night previews, and is expected to gross $23M+ in its opening weekend.
STILL PLAYING: Still at theaters, and expected to finish in second place in its third weekend at theaters, is AT&T's (T) Warner Bros. latest comic book release, "Joker." The film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and was directed by Todd Phillips, is still playing at over 4,000 theaters. Likely rounding out this weekend's top five are MGM's animated film "The Addams Family" and Viacom (VIA, VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's sci-fi thriller "Gemini Man."
