"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.
"Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" earned $36M from 3,790 theaters in its debut weekend, well behind expectations and over 45% less than the launch of “Maleficent” five years ago. Overseas, the sequel bowed to $117M from 56 markets for an early worldwide total of $153M. Audiences gave the movie an A, while Rotten Tomatoes rating stands at 41%.
BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' "Joker" fell to second place in its third weekend, grossing $29.2M from 4,090 locations. Behind it was Sony's (SNE) "Zombieland 2: Double Tap," opening to $26.7M from 3,468 theaters. MGM and United Artists Releasing's "The Addams Family" placed number four, earning $16M in its second weekend for a domestic cume of $56.8M. Rounding out the top five, Viacom (VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's "Gemini Man" grossed $8.5M in its second outing for a domestic total of $36.5M.
