Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.
OPENING THIS WEEKEND: Opening this weekend is STXfilms's release of action crime film "The Gentlemen," directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, and Hugh Grant, and Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal's thriller "The Turning," an adaptation of Henry James' novella "The Turn of the Screw." The two films are expected to finish in fourth and fifth places this weekend. "The Gentlemen" brought in $725K from Thursday night previews, while "The Turning" brought in $425K.
STILL PLAYING: Expected to top the box office in its second weekend at theaters is Sony's (SNE) action movie "Bad Boys for Life," which is playing in 3,775 theaters. This third film in the "Bad Boys" franchise, all of which star Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as buddy cops, is expected to bring in around $29M this weekend. Universal's WWI film "1917" is now in its third weekend of wide release, playing at 3,937 theaters. The Sam Mendes directed film is again expected to finish in second place this weekend with a domestic gross of between $13M-$14M.
