Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.
OPENING THIS WEEKEND: This weekend sees four new wide releases in theaters -- ViacomCBS (VIAC) subsidiary Paramount's live-action video game adaptation "Sonic the Hedgehog," which is opening at over 4,100 theaters, Sony (SNE) and Blumhouse's horror film "Fantasy Island," Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal's romantic drama "The Photograph," and Searchlight's comedy drama "Downhill." The Presidents Day holiday extends the box office to four days this weekend, and Friday is Valentine's Day, which could give "The Photograph" a boost.
"Sonic" has already delivered $3M in Thursday night previews, while "The Photograph" brought in $650K, and "Fantasy Island" did not have Thursday evening previews. "Downhill" is expected to fall outside the top ten this weekend, with an estimated opening of $3M-$4M.
STILL PLAYING: In its second weekend at theaters, and expected to fall to second place this weekend, is AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' superhero flick "Birds of Prey," starring Margot Robbie as the DC Comics character Harley Quinn. The film, playing at 4,236 theaters, is expected to bring in over $16M over the three-day weekend, and over $21M over the four-day holiday weekend.
OVERALL DOMESTIC PROJECTIONS (FOUR DAY):
Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Disney (DIS) and Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B).
