Paramount’s (PARA) horror movie “Smile” on the weekend at the North America box office with a $22M debut from 3,645 locations. The film tells the story of a therapist who meets a graduate student who recently witnesses a gruesome suicide. Jessie T. Usher Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert and Kal Penn co-star.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Warner Bros. (WBD) “Don’t Worry Darling” placed number 2 with an estimated $7.3M for a 10-day domestic total of $32.8M. Behind it was Sony’s (SONY) TriStar division and eOne’s “The Woman King” with an estimated $7M from 3,504 theaters. Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal’s “Bros,” the first gay romantic comedy from a major Hollywood Studio, placed number 4 with a $4.8M debut. Rounding out the top 5, Disney’s (DIS) “Avatar” earned an estimated $4.7M from 1,860 locations.
