NVDA, AMD

Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland estimates that AMD (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA) likely benefited from more than $500M in Ethereum-related GPU sales in Q4 and believes this trend continued in the first few weeks of 2018. Given this, and the still-high mining profitability for the cryptocurrency despite the recent drop in coin price, Rolland sees potential for upside to both AMD's and Nvidia's calendar fourth quarter results and perhaps their near-term guidance as well. However, he sees substantial longer-term risks for both as mining profitability may have induced "false purchases" of more and higher-priced cards, Rolland tells investors. Citing this risk, he cut his price target on AMD to $13 from $15, as he believes it may be more impacted by false purchases than Nvidia if Ethereum prices decline. Rolland keeps Neutral ratings on both AMD and Nvidia.
