Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.
INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE EXPECTED TO WIN WEEKEND: Sony's (SNE) "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," the seventh Spider-Man film from Sony but first one that is animated, is opening this weekend. The film, which is playing in 3,321 locations, has already brought in $3.5M from Thursday night previews. "Spider-Verse" is expected to top the box office with an estimated $40M+ opening weekend.
THE MULE, MORTAL ENGINES ALSO OPENING: Also hitting theaters this weekend are AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros. crime drama "The Mule," which was directed by Clint Eastwood, and Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal's steampunk adventure "Mortal Engines," which was written by Peter Jackson. These three major releases follow a weekend that saw no new releases, which resulted in last weekend being the worst at the box office for the year.
REST OF THE TOP FIVE: Still in theaters are Universal's animated Christmas movie "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch" and Disney's (DIS) "Ralph Breaks the Internet," the sequel to 2012 cartoon "Wreck-It Ralph," starring the voice talents of John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman.
OVERALL PROJECTIONS:
1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: $40M+
2. The Mule: $15M-$18M
3. Dr. Seuss' The Grinch: ~$12M
4. Mortal Engines: $10M-$12M
5. Ralph Breaks the Internet: ~$10.6M
