"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.
Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's "The Secret Life of Pets 2" won the weekend's North American box office, earning $47.1M in its debut from 4,561 locations. The animated family film received a 54% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore. "The Secret Life of Pets 2" is the tenth team-up for animation studio illumination and Universal.
BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Disney (DIS) subsidiary Fox's "Dark Phoenix" came in second, debuting to a disappointing $33M in stateside ticket sales on 3,721 screens and becoming the lowest-earning debut for an X-Men movie ever. Behind was Disney's "Aladdin," grossing $24.5M for a cume of $232.4M. AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' "Godzilla: King of Monsters" placed number four with $15.5M from 4,108 theaters. Rounding out the top five, Viacom (VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's "Rocketman" posted another $14M for a cume of $50.5M.
