Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.
OPENING THIS WEEKEND: This weekend sees two major releases in Twentieth Century Fox's (FOX, FOXA) auto racing biographical drama "Ford v Ferrari," which is opening in 3,528 theaters, and Sony Pictures' (SNE) action comedy reboot "Charlie's Angels," which is opening in 3,452 theaters. "Ford v Ferrari," which stars Christian Bale and Matt Damon, already earned $2.1M in Thursday night previews, while "Charlie's Angels," starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska, brought in $900K in Thursday night previews.
STILL PLAYING: Lionsgate's (LGF.A, LGF.B) World War II film "Midway," directed by Roland Emmerich, is in its third weekend at theaters, and expected to finish in third place, while Viacom (VIA, VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's family comedy "Playing with Fire," starring John Cena, is expected to finish in fourth. Rounding out the top five is expected to be AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros. horror film "Doctor Sleep," which has underperformed since it opened on November 8.
OVERALL DOMESTIC PROJECTIONS:
Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) and Disney (DIS).
