On The Fly: Top stock stories at midday

Stocks opened with modest losses and have remained in negative territory throughout the morning. The averages have moved in a narrow range but have drifted lower as most market participants begin looking to the upcoming holiday. The economic calendar, which included a bevy of reports, did not yield enough of a catalyst to get the buyers involved. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims rose 21,000 to 275,000 in the week of December 17, which was above the forecast for 256,000 first-time claims. GDP growth was revised up to a 3.5% rate in the third quarter. Durable goods orders fell 4.6% in November driven by a sharp decline in orders for civilian aircraft. The FHFA home price index increased 0.4% to 240.2 in October, after the 0.6% rise in September. Personal income was flat in November, while spending rose 0.2%. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Micron Technology (MU) have gained about 11.5% near noon after the memory-chip maker beat quarterly expectations on both the top and bottom line, as a stabilizing PC market boosted pricing and chip demand. The company also gave positive guidance for the second quarter... Conversely, Red Hat (RHT) dropped 12% after the open-source software solutions company reported lower than anticipated third quarter revenue and reduced its full year revenue guidance. Additionally, Red Hat announced that its CFO Frank Calderoni is leaving to become chief executive at another company... Also lower after earnings was Bed, Bath & Beyond (BBBY), which slipped more than 8% after the retail chain announced earnings and guidance that came in lower than expectations. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Globalstar (GSAT), which advanced about 33% after TRDaily reported, citing sources, that the company's revised FCC TLPS proposal has received at least three votes at the commission. Also higher was Weight Watchers (WTW), which gained over 11% after Oprah Winfrey, one of the company's shareholders, announced that she had lost 40 pounds using the program. Among the noteworthy losers was AAR Corp. (AAR), which slid over 9% after the company reported in-line second quarter earnings per share and lower than expected revenue for the quarter. Also lower after earnings was CalAmp (CAMP), which fell about 7.5% following worse than expected third quarter results. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 49.25, or 0.25%, to 19,892.71, the Nasdaq was down 34.65, or 0.63%, to 5,436.79, and the S&P 500 was down 8.19, or 0.36%, to 2,256.99.

Oppenheimer remains positive on Red Hat after results
After Red Hat reported mixed results/guidance, Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron notes that "one quarter does not make a trend," and the weakness appears largely due to a combination of a number of factors, none of which he believes reflect on the company's longer term business outlook. The analyst maintains his positive view, with deals metrics "largely solid" despite delayed government deals, and says he still sees upside as Red Hat drives continued expansion through up-sell opportunities. He reiterates an Outperform rating and $88 price target on the shares.

Red Hat price target lowered to $89 from $98 at Needham
Needham analyst Scott Zeller lowered his price target for Red Hat to $89 from $98 after quarterly results, which were impacted by numerous factors including f/x headwinds, a reluctance to pay up-front in multi-year deals, and federal space weakness. Nonetheless, he believes the underlying strength of the franchise remains solid, and continues to like Red Hat's secular strength and believes shares may rebound in Q4 when billings are guided to be "mid-teens." Zeller reiterates a Buy rating on the shares.

Globalstar downgraded on lower odds of TLPS passing at Chardan
As previously reported, Chardan downgraded Globalstar to Neutral from Buy, as analyst James McIlree argues that the odds of TLPS passing have diminished greatly after one FCC commissioner announced he had voted against the TLPS proposal and reports indicated that another also voted against TLPS. Even if TLPS does pass it seems it will be a provisional approval, or for test period, which would be a positive step but would also make it more difficult for the company to attract partners, McIlree tells investors.
