On The Fly: Top stock stories at midday

Stocks began the session in negative territory as the market remained hung over from yesterday's press conference held by President-elect Trump. The future president chose to attack the pharmaceutical industry, which has moved lower and is now taking the rest of the market with it. The losses in the major averages are the biggest of 2017 and are broad based, as each of the major equity indexes is down more than 0.5% near midday. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims rose 10,000 to 247,000 in the week ended January 7 from a revised 30,000 drop to 237,000 previously. Import prices rose 0.4% in December, while export prices edged up 0.3%. Gas inventories showed a 151 billion cubic feet draw versus the consensus call for a 143 billion cubic feet draw. In Europe, industrial production across the 19-country Eurozone spiked by 1.5% in November. COMPANY NEWS: Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) shares trading in New York are down about 12% after the Environmental Protection Agency issued a notice to the automaker for alleged violations of the Clean Air Act for installing and failing to disclose engine management software to disguise emissions from some of its diesel engines. In a statement, the company said it "is disappointed that the EPA has chosen to issue a notice of violation with respect to the emissions control technology employed in the company's 2014-16 model year light duty 3.0-liter diesel engines. FCA US intends to work with the incoming administration to present its case and resolve this matter fairly and equitably and to assure the EPA and FCA US customers that the company's diesel-powered vehicles meet all applicable regulatory requirements"... Shares of Delta Air Lines (DAL) have dropped after the company reported sliding profit in the fourth quarter amid rising labor costs. However, the airline operator, which forecast passenger unit revenue to be flat to up 2% in the early months of 2017, is well off its lows as analyst step in to defend the stock... Meanwhile, Amazon (AMZN) announced that it plans to create an additional 100,000 full-time, full-benefit jobs in the U.S. over the next 18 months. According to the company, these new job opportunities are for people with all types of experience, education and skill levels... Apple (AAPL) plans to build a "significant" new business in original television shows and movies, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. According to sources, programming will be available to Apple's streaming-music service subscribers, adding that Apple is also considering offering original movies along with scripted TV shows, similar to what others such as Netflix (NFLX) offer. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI), which advanced almost 30% after reporting better than expected preliminary fourth quarter results. Also higher was Tiffany (TIF), which rose over 3% following a sales update from Richemont, another luxury jeweler, increasing optimism that the luxury goods industry is in the midst of a turnaround. Additionally, The Advisory Board (ABCO) added about 16% after activist investor Paul Singer's Elliott Asset Management disclosed a stake in the company. Among the noteworthy losers was Vista Outdoor (VSTO), which fell about 22% after reporting that it expects to record a material, non-cash intangible asset impairment charge in its Hunting and Shooting Accessories reporting unit. Also lower was Insight Enterprises (NSIT), which slipped 12% after Raymond James analyst Brian Alexander downgraded the stock to Underperform as he believes investors are placing unrealistic expectations on the pro forma earnings power and valuation multiple post the Datalink merger. Additionally, KB Home (KBH) dropped about 5% following quarterly results and after Evercore ISI analyst Stephen Kim downgraded the stock to Sell, saying shares appear overvalued. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 121.70, or 0.61%, to 19,832.58, the Nasdaq was down 38.59, or 0.69%, to 5,525.06, and the S&P 500 was down 11.94, or 0.52%, to 2,263.38.

Apple called a top U.S. IT Hardware pick for 2017 at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty named Apple as a top pick in U.S. IT Hardware in 2017, saying that the market is "focusing too much on near-term supply chain noise" and not enough on the upcoming iPhone supercycle along with the potential positives of cash repatriation and U.S. tax reform. Of these, Huberty believes the iPhone supercycle is most debated by investors who see China as a risk, but her view is that consumer loyalty to Apple remains high in China. Huberty has an Overweight rating and $148 price target on Apple shares.

CLSA lowers March quarter estimates on Apple, raises price target to $137
After a survey of middle-class smartphone purchasing intentions in Tier 1-2 cities in China, CLSA concluded that smartphone demand among respondents is basically flat with last quarter, iPhone demand among aspiring upgraders is also flat, iPhone loyalty has weakened and Xiaomi and OPPO have gained traction. Citing reports of weaker build plans and a more cautious outlook in China, CLSA analyst Avi Silver lowered his March quarter estimates and cut his FY17 EPS estimate for Apple to $8.39 from $8.99. However, he also raised his FY18 EPS view to $10.46 from $10.25 and increased his price target to $137 from $130, citing recent multiple expansion. Silver keeps a Buy rating on Apple shares.

Apple fiscal 2017 estimates lowered below consensus at Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo lowered its fiscal 2017 revenue and EPS estimates for Apple significantly below Street levels. The firm says that its December checks showed that supplies of most models of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were either "readily available" or "reasonable" in the U.S. Wells thinks this may indicate that demand for the devices dropped. It believes that the company's guidance for its March quarter could miss expectations, and it keeps a Market Perform rating on the stock.

Apple remains underappreciated, says Drexel Hamilton
Drexel Hamilton analyst Brian White said all the companies in his Apple Monitor have reported December sales that came in better than historical seasonality. Final December sales for the Apple Monitor fell by 2%, but were better than the average decrease of 11% over the past eleven years, and compare favorably to the five year average of down 6%. White believes Apple is one of the most underappreciated stocks in the world. Near-term, the analyst expects Tim Cook to make Apple grow again in Q1 on the back of the iPhone 7 and a happy holiday season, while he looks forward to the launch of the iPhone 8 in September 2017 and more color on future innovations. Additionally, White said potentially favorable tax repatriation policies could act as a positive catalyst for Apple shares. The analyst rates Apple a Buy with a $185 price target on shares.

Barclays said Cummins (CMI) makes engines for the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 series, in 5.7 and 6.4 liter displacements, which likely excludes Cummins from the EPA's current issue.

Airline stocks should benefit from fiscal stimulus, says Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Linenberg believes stronger GDP growth in 2017, helped by fiscal stimulus initiatives, should be good for economically-sensitive stocks such as airlines. Companies that are domestic-oriented, pay cash taxes, have low financial leverage and can take advantage of bonus depreciation should outperform, Linenberg tells investors in a research note. He likes shares of Southwest (LUV), JetBlue (JBLU), Spirit Airlines (SAVE), Allegiant Travel (ALGT) and Alaska Air (ALK). Delta Air Lines (DAL) is his top pick among the majors.

Delta Air Lines enters partnership with Aeromexico
Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico accepted the final order issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation granting them antitrust immunity and allowing the airlines to establish a joint cooperation agreement. This historic agreement will establish the largest transborder alliance between Mexico and the United States, expand competition and benefit customers of both airlines. Delta will offer a strong presence in the United States through its hubs in Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York, Salt Lake City and Seattle; while Aeromexico will offer larger access to Mexico through its hubs in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. The airlines have been partners for 22 years. The regulatory approval represents an important milestone in the process, announced last year, to launch a cash tender offer for Delta's acquisition for up to 49 percent of Grupo Aeromexico S.A.B. de C.V., capital stock, further strengthening the partnership between the two airlines.

Concerns around revenue deceleration, slowing ad load growth, fake news and ad metrics have contributed to the "recent wall of worry," the analyst contends. Anmuth views the fears as largely overdone and thinks they create a good buying opportunity.
