Costco downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Trussell downgraded Costco (COST) to Hold and lowered his price target for the shares to $172 from $187. Positive pipeline catalysts have played out while competition is intensifying with Amazon.com (AMZN) and Wal-Mart (WMT) accelerating in-store and online efforts, Trussell tells investors in a research note titled "Past Its Prime? Downgrade to Hold." He believes Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods (WFM) is a "game changer" for Costco's "competitive moat in grocery."

Wal-Mart, Costco weakness on Amazon news a buying opportunity, says Baird
Baird analyst Peter Benedict said he we views Amazon's (AMZN) deal to buy Whole Foods (WFM) as reinforcing the value of local distribution and he believes Wal-Mart (WMT) and Costco (COST) are particularly well positioned to compete in the omni-channel grocery market. The analyst, who recommends using today's weakness in those two stocks as a buying opportunity, keeps an Outperform rating on both, while maintaining a Neutral rating on Target (TGT), noting that he thinks today's news "raises the bar" on its need to find an effective strategy to turn its grocery business.

Costco downgraded to Neutral from Conviction Buy at Goldman Sachs
As previously reported, Goldman downgraded Costco (COST) to Neutral from Conviction Buy and lowered its price target to $176 from $197. Analyst Matthew Fassler believes Costco's valuation will be capped due to Amazon's (AMZN) ongoing moves into consumables, online investments by Wal-Mart (WMT) and fading fundamental catalysts. He believes Amazon will offer superior pricing and delivery competency versus incumbents but does not anticipate meaningful erosion in warehouse business trends any time soon.

Kroger selloff last week a buying opportunity, says Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Shane Higgins views last week's 27.6% selloff in shares of Kroger (KR) following the weaker than expected Q1 results and Amazon.com's (AMZN) acquisition of Whole Foods (WFM) as a buying opportunity. Kroger can still compete and is well positioned to capitalize on market disruption, Higgins tells investors in a research note. Recent Apple pullback largely due to overall tech weakness, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty believes the recent pullback in Apple shares, which are down 7% in the last week, is largely a result of overall weakness in the tech sector and not a change in investor sentiment towards the stock. She notes that Apple shares have risen an average of 18% in the 3 months prior to iPhone announcements over the last ten years, which she believes suggests the recent weakness creates an attractive opportunity to buy the stock. Amazon.com price target raised to $1,100 from $975 at Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Anthony DiClemente says that Amazon's (AMZN) current valuation is "reasonable." The analyst says that, assuming the cloud business is worth $220B, based on a 2020 multiple similar to that given Microsoft (MSFT), while its Prime video business is worth $8B, or 12% of Netflix's (NFLX) current valuation, and its advertising business is worth $27B, or double his estimate of Snap's (SNAP) total valuation, the company's e-commerce business is only being valued at about $210B at current levels. Noting that Wal-Mart (WMT) is currently valued at $280B, the analyst says that Amazon's valuation "is not excessively strencthed." DiClemente raised his 2020 EV/EBITDA multiple for the cloud business to 14x from 13.5x, noting that SAP (SAP), Oracle (ORCL) and Microsoft (MSFT) all had higher multiples at similar points in their histories. The analyst raised his target multiple for Amazon's North America e-commerce business to 13x from 12x, which he says is in-line with Wal-Mart's mean multiple from 1992-2001. Multiple software companies to benefit from AI, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Mark L. Moerdler believes that software companies will capture more than 50% of the revenue from AI. Multiple software companies will be able to benefit from the emergence of AI by creating "more efficient algorithms, " he believes. Microsoft (MSFT) will be well-positioned to use AI to drive adoption of its Azure cloud offering, while Adobe (ADBE) can use the technology to increase adoption of its cloud offerings and monetize AI through its IO product, the analyst believes. Splunk (SPLK) has added Machine Learning capabilities to its big data platform, and they are being used to deliver its security offerings, according to Moerdler. Over the longer term, the company should be able to incorporate machine learning into other products, the analyst stated. Oracle (ORCL) is benefiting from the use of AI in conjunction with its cloud offerings and from Machine Learning that it uses in conjunction with its data sources, the analyst stated. Finally, Salesforce's (CRM) Einstein Artificial Intelligence could give the company a competitive advantage over some competitors who do not offer similar functionality, he wrote. The analyst keeps Outperform ratings on all the stocks named except for Salesforce, which he continues to rate Underperform.

Oppenheimer bullish on Visa, MasterCard ahead of results
Oppenheimer analyst Glenn Greene reiterates Outperform ratings for MasterCard (MA) and Visa (V) and $120 and $95 price targets, respectively, heading into results. The analyst is encouraged by "solid" January intra-quarter volume growth, improving gas price trends, strong retail sales growth, and broadly positive card issuer trends. Further, Greene continues to believe that MasterCard and Visa are attractive at current levels, given their defensible market positions and strong long-term prospects. Nonetheless, he prefers Visa relative to MasterCard at present given the continuing U.S. volume boost from the Costco (COST)/USAA wins and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) Sapphire Reserve momentum, apparent conservative guidance, and Visa Europe accretion benefits.

Qualcomm reinstated with a Hold at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore reinstated coverage of Qualcomm (QCOM) with a Hold rating and $62 price target. While the current valuation is "enticing," uncertainty around the timing of the NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) deal closing and questions surrounding litigation with Apple (AAPL) are likely to keep the shares range-bound, the analyst contends.

NXP Semiconductors downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore downgraded NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) to Hold citing the stock's proximity to Qualcomm's (QCOM) all-cash takeout price of $110 per share. He continues to expect the deal to close by the end of 2017 at the announced price. Qualcomm is unlikely to pay a "meaningfully higher price" given the "lack of a viable second bidder," the analyst contends. He has a $110 price target for NXP shares. The chipmaker closed Friday up 9c to $109.09.
