IBM price target lowered to $125 from $135 at Jefferies
Jefferies analyst James Kisner lowered his price target for IBM (IBM) to $125 and reiterates an Underperform rating on the shares. While channel checks indicate IBM's Watson platform remains one of the most complete cognitive platforms available in the marketplace today, the "hefty services" component of many artificial intelligence deployments will be a hindrance to adoption, Kisner tells investors in a research note titled "Creating Shareholder Value with AI? Not so Elementary, My Dear Watson." The analyst also believes IBM looks "outgunned in the war" for AI talent and will likely see increasing competition. Kisner adds that his firm believes Nvidia (NVDA) is the biggest beneficiary of ramping AI adoption. He lists Pure Storage (PSTG) and Mellanox (MLNX) as other beneficiaries.

General Electric price target lowered to $22 from $27 at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst C. Stephen Tusa lowered his price target for General Electric shares to $22 from $27 and keeps an Underweight rating on the name. GE closed yesterday down 10c to $27.35. The CEO change was "unexpectedly early" and the departure of the head of Power suggests that fundamentals are weaker than expected, Tusa tells investors in a research note. The analyst expects the new CEO in the second half of the year to reset earnings guidance, announced a material restructuring that should include project selectivity and a change in capital allocation strategy, with a potential cut to the buyback. Tusa's sum-of-the-parts analysis suggests a fair value for GE of $20 per share. He does not see a "quick or easy fix to the current predicament" and does not expect the multiple to expand as new management undertakes a reset.

Citi sees multiple ways for GE to drive shareholder value
General Electric has "significant flexibility" to drive value creation for shareholders under CEO-elect John Flannery, Citi analyst Andrew Kaplowitz tells investors in a research note. While early to speculate on potential actions Flannery will take after assuming the role on August 1, a disciplined approach to operational management and capital allocation could serve as a catalyst, Kaplowitz argues. The analyst believes consistent execution could support a return to GE's historical valuation range. Nonetheless, to reflect slower near-term demand trends in Power and energy headwinds, Kaplowitz lowered his 2018 earnings per share estimate to $1.80 from $1.90 and 2019 estimate to $2.00 from $2.10. The analyst cut his price target for the shares to $34 from $36. He keeps a Buy rating on GE. Kaplowitz's sum-of-the-parts analysis suggests a potential valuation for GE in the $32-$34 per share range. The stock closed Friday at $26.15.

Teva landing Soriot would be 'material positive,' says Citi
Citi analyst Liav Abraham believes Calcalist's report of Teva (TEVA) hiring away AstraZeneca's (AZN) CEO Pascal Soriot has credibility given the "relatively accurate track record" of the Israeli press in the "leaking" of information pertaining to Teva. The news, if confirmed, would be a "material positive" for Teva over the near to medium term, Abraham tells investors in a research note. She believes Soriot would "lend significant credibility" to Teva's turnaround thesis. On the other side, Soriot leaving would increase concerns over the pending outcome of AstraZeneca's MYSTIC trial, which constitutes the dominant near-term driver for the shares, Abraham argues. She has a Buy rating on Teva with a $42 price target. The stock in premarket trading is up 2% to $32.80. AstraZeneca is down 14c to $32.78.

Ford upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Barclays

Johnson this morning also upgraded Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) to Equal Weight and kept an Equal Weight rating on General Motors (GM). Any way you look at it, Ford looks better positioned than both GM and Fiat in a border adjustment scenario, Johnson tells investors in a research note. The analyst points out that Ford has a higher mix of its North American unit production in the U.S. relative to the other two carmakers. Should a boarder adjustment tax be levied by President Trump, the analyst estimates only $3.6B for Ford versus $10.4B for GM and $18B for Fiat. Even in a "chicken tax" scenario, or a 25% duty on cargo-carrying light trucks, Ford would be better positioned, Johnson contends.

Morgan Stanley makes "big" cuts to US Auto Sales forecasts
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas made "big" cuts to his US auto industry sales forecast, reducing his 2017 US SAAR forecast to 17.3M units from 18.3M units, 2018 to 16.4M units from 18.9M units, 2019 to 15M units from 19.2M units, and 2020 to 15M units from 18.7M units. Jonas believes the auto cycle may be hitting a point of diminishing returns following 8 years into the biggest cycle on record as used car values erode, pressuring conditions for selling new vehicles, and said new vehicle inventory levels continue to rise. Additionally, the analyst expects electrical margins to face increasing competition from new entrants and higher development costs. As a result, Jonas cut estimates across the board and downgraded Lear (LEA) to Underweight from Equal Weight.
