Week in review: How Trump's policies moved stocks

Catch up on the top industries and stocks that were impacted, or were predicted to be impacted, by the comments, actions and policies of President Trump and his administration with this weekly recap compiled by The Fly: 1. IMMIGRATION POLICY: On Tuesday, Jefferies analyst Andy Barish and a team of his peers said they believe weak spending from Hispanic consumers flagged by several companies this earnings season is mainly due to uncertainty around immigration policy. Given the challenging environment for new legislation, the analyst argued that the weakness may be a short-term phenomenon, with many companies potentially set to benefit from an improvement in spending from this demographic. Among companies the firm named that were or may impacted by the change in spending from Hispanic consumers are: O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), Wal-Mart (WMT), e.l.f. Beauty's (ELF), Ulta Beauty (ULTA), Jack in the Box (JACK), Murphy USA (MUSA), Target (TGT), Valvoline (VVV) and Wingstop (WING). 2. GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN: On Wednesday, U.S. stocks fell after President Trump said at a rally in Arizona that "we're building that wall" even if "we have to close down our government." Additionally, the President also expressed doubts whether the U.S. will be able to successfully renegotiate the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA. The government will "probably" terminate the trade agreement, he added. 3. STEEL SECTOR: According to a report by Reuters on Thursday, senior executives from 25 U.S. steel and steel-related companies, including Nucor (NUE), U.S. Steel (X), ArcelorMittal (MT) and DTE Energy (DTE), have sent a letter to President Donald Trump for immediate import restrictions, saying the industry is suffering the consequences of government inaction but this could change with his "bold leadership" and "America First" vision. "The need for action is urgent. Since the 232 investigation was announced in April, imports have continued to surge," the executives said in the letter, adding that "Immediate action must meaningfully adjust imports to restore healthy levels of capacity utilization and profitability to the domestic industry over a sustained period." 4. HEAD OF THE FED: Just last month, President Trump told the Wall Street Journal that Gary Cohn, the director of the National Economic Council, was on the short list of candidates to be the next head of the Federal Reserve. Now, Cohn told the Financial Times in his first public comments since the events in Charlottesville that he faced "enormous pressure" to quit in the wake of Trump's initial reaction, but he has decided to remain in his post as he feels "a duty to fulfill my commitment to work on behalf of the American people." However, he added to the FT that he feels "compelled to voice my distress over the events of the last two weeks," which may put in question whether he will still be in the driver's seat to take over leading the central bank if Janet Yellen is replaced when her term ends. "Week in Review" is The Fly's weekly recap of its recurring series of "Trump Effect" exclusive stories.

Weak spending from Hispanic consumers likely temporary, says Jefferies
A team of Jefferies analysts note that several consumer companies have flagged weakness from Hispanic consumers during this earnings season, which they attribute to likely being linked to uncertainty around immigration policy more than a result of a deteriorating economic backdrop. Companies that have been hurt may be due for a rebound as this is assumed to be a short term phenomenon and some have already noted improvement, the team tells investors. Some of the companies that recently have specifically flagged weakness in Hispanic spending include Foot Locker (FL), Murphy USA (MUSA), O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), Target (TGT), Valvoline (VVV) and Wingstop (WING), the firm noted.

Advance Auto Parts price target lowered to $99 from $125 at Citi
Citi analyst Kate McShane lowered her price target for Advance Auto Parts (AAP) to $99 after the company dropped the midpoint of its comp guidance to down 2% from up 1%. While Advance's growth initiatives will take time to gain traction, it's "highly alarming" that the company will likely diverge from O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) again starting in Q3, especially with years of easy stacked comparisons, McShane tells investors in a research note. She thinks O'Reilly and AutoZone (AZO) remain the better way to gain exposure to auto parts retailing. The analyst keeps a Neutral rating on Advance Auto Parts.

O'Reilly Automotive price target lowered to $220 from $300 at Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Brian Nagel lowered his price target for O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) to $220 from $300 but reiterated an Outperform rating on the shares. While the inroads of Amazon (AMZN) and other online-only players might have contributed somewhat to top-line weakness at traditional chains lately, the analyst believes a confluence of unfavorable, largely cyclical factors appears to represent the primary culprit behind a recent shift lower in comp sales.

Price cuts not a 'silver bullet' for Amazon to disrupt grocery, says Citi
Citi analyst Alvin Concepcion noted that a number of food retail stocks sold off yesterday after Amazon (AMZN) announced price reductions on certain top selling items at Whole Foods (WFM) stores beginning on Monday when their deal closes, but he contends "price cuts alone are not a silver bullet to becoming a disruptive threat" in an industry that already has many discount operators. He adds that he would be wary of a more significant negative overreaction to news around Amazon's price plans at Whole Foods at this time. Some of the food retailing stocks that declined yesterday included Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT), Kroger (KR), Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM), Costco (COST) and Supervalu (SVU).

The analyst is "optimistic" that this in-store launch can be broader over time. Further, her channel checks in the U.K. indicate "broad strength" of sales at Superdrug. Checks suggest e.l.f.'s distribution growth initiatives remain on track and that it remains a share gainer, Murphy tells investors in a research note. Moskow sees further risk from the pork industry's 10% expansion in slaughter capacity. 4. TripAdvisor (TRIP) and Shutterstock (SSTK) downgraded to Underperform from Hold at Jefferies. 5. Domino's Pizza (DPZ) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Argus by analyst John Staszak due to concerns about slowing international revenue combined with a potential for a comparable slowdown in domestic sales. Jefferies lays out stocks 'overly discounting' Amazon risk
Amazon.com's (AMZN) planned purchase of Whole Foods Market (WFM) has further widened the valuation spread between consumer stocks the market views as resistant to the Aamzon threat and those viewed as vulnerable, Jefferies analysts including Andy Barish and Daniel Binder tells investors in a research note. They believe this dynamic has created opportunities. Specifically, the analysts feel shares of Wal-Mart (WMT), Hain Celestial (HAIN), Foot Locker (FL) and Advance Auto Parts (AAP) are "overly discounting" potential risk from Amazon. Jefferies also believes Casey's General Stores (CASY), Lamb Weston (LW), Murphy USA (MUSA), Monster Beverage (MNST), Starbucks (SBUX) and Ulta Beauty (ULTA) are "well insulated" from Amazon disruption.

Morgan Stanley more bullish on second half steel pricing
Following a dinner with steel participants last week, Morgan Stanley analyst Evan Kurtz said he is more bullish on second half 2017 steel pricing. The takeaways were that imports are likely to dip significantly in September and October due to traders not wanting to take the risk of being an "import of record" with the threat of tariffs. Further, the analyst said inventories are low, so even with stable demand, the market could get tight, the analyst wrote. Kurtz raised his HRC forecast for the second half to $625/st from $570/st, and raised his scrap forecast by $30/t. Axiom says 'now is the time' to short U.S. Steel, maintains Sell rating
Axiom analyst Gordon Johnson II believes "now is the time" to short U.S. Steel (X) and Cliffs Natural (CLF) shares and to go underweight the U.S. steel sector, as he sees an increasing likelihood of an indefinite delay in the US Commerce Department's 232 steel tariff decision. He also thinks the contribution to China's GDP growth from commodity-intensive sectors may have peaked, he tells investors. The analyst keeps a Sell rating on U.S. Steel shares.
