Tax reform proposal does not elimiate electric vehicle credit, Reuters reports

The U.S. Senate tax reform proposal unveiled yesterday will not kill a $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit as Republicans int he House have proposed, Reuters reports. Eliminating the credit could hurt automakers including Tesla (TSLA), GM (GM), Nissan (NSANY) and Volkswagen (VLKAY). Under the current law, automakers can use the credit, which phases out after the carmaker reaches 200,000 plug-in vehicles sold. Reference Link

Nomura sees Tesla selling all it can produce after Model 3 sedan spin
In a research note titled "Better Than Advertised," Nomura Instinet Romit Shah says he left test driving Tesla's (TSLA) Model 3 sedan feeling the automaker will be selling as many cars as it can produce for a long time. Taking the sedan for a spin reinforced the analyst's view that Tesla's addressable market opportunity is "perhaps much larger" than the BMW 3-series, Mercedes C class and Audi A4. There is a "real passion" for the brand, which is "bigger than loyalty because much of the enthusiasm comes from people who have never owned a Tesla," Shah tells investors in a research note. The only comparable product the analyst sees is Apple's (AAPL) iPhone. Apple succeeded because the world shifted from computers to smartphones and Apple had the best product, the analyst writes. Similarly, he believes there is a secular shift today from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles and that Tesla has the best product. If Tesla can overcome its operational challenges, it will see "unprecedented revenue growth and strong cash flows," Shah concludes. He has a Buy rating on Tesla with a $500 price target. The automaker closed yesterday down $1.66 to $304.39.

Tesla situation in China could be better than thought, says Bernstein
After hosting a "fireside chat" with Tesla's VP of investor relations, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi, Jr. said he came away with the impression that Tesla believes it may be able to produce cars in China to be sold in the country's domestic market without having to face import tariffs. The analyst, who also noted that Tesla's battery costs may be falling faster than expected, keeps a Market Perform rating and $265 price target on Tesla shares.

Goldman Sachs reiterates Sell on Tesla, sees need to raise capital sooner
Goldman Sachs analyst David Tamberrino believes Tesla shares should continue to de-rate following the company's Q3 report and push out of its Model 3 production target for 5,000 per week to late Q1. He thinks the slower ramp of Model 3 production mean the company's goal for positive operating cash flow generation should "remain elusive until the middle of 2018" while it still sees significant free cash flow burn. Tamberrino, who now believes Tesla will need to raise capital sooner, in Q2 of 2018 versus Q3 2018 previously, cut his price target to $205 from $210 and keeps a Sell rating on the stock.

Tesla Model 3 slippage a near-term buying opportunity, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said that following Tesla's Q3 report, he feels "decent" about demand for its product, "somewhat concerned" about its cash consumption and "confident...for now" about capital markets' openness to funding Tesla's ambitious growth plan. If Tesla can produce and deliver 5,000 Model 3 units per week "anywhere near" its latest projected timeframe without an increase in cash consumption, the stock should trade "materially higher," said Jonas, who sees the post-earnings pullback as a near-term buying opportunity. Longer-term, he believes risk remains, leading him to keep an Equal Weight rating on Tesla shares.

General Motors downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Anindya Das downgraded General Motors to Neutral while raising his price target for the shares to $46 from $43. The automaker closed yesterday down 39c to $42.98. The analyst sees "limited scope" for raising his estimates much higher given the competitive landscape in the North American market. However, the upcoming SUV and full-size pickup truck launches in 2018 and 2019 puts GM at a position of strength, Das tells investors in a research note. The analyst, though, sees the China market slowing down in 2018.

Jefferies 'not ready' to buy GM at current levels
Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois raised his price target for General Motors to $40 from $36 while reiterating a Hold rating on the shares. The analyst admits he "missed the recent excitement" in GM shares, but says he's "not ready to join in at the current price." Houchois is "surprised" by management's tolerance for low net liquidity and finds it too early to give value to GM's new mobility earnings. Goldman Sachs this morning downgraded GM to Sell.

Navistar story remains compelling, says Baird
Baird analyst David Leiker believes the Navistar story is in its early innings, with current results near breakeven but with big upside over the next two to three years. Auto executives say Trump policies to be a 'net positive,' says RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Joseph Spak says that auto executives, after speaking with Trump administration officials, predict that the administration's policies will be "net positive" for auto OEMs. Spak says that "pretty much" every company with whom he spoke says that the risk from the policies will be "manageable," The analyst adds that executives who met with administration officials expect " rationality on some of the extreme measures will prevail," while measures such as a reduced corporate tax and less regulation will provide "offsets." Publicly traded companies in the space include Daimler AG (DDAIF), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Honda (HMC), Nissan (NSANY), Toyota (TM) and Volkswagen (VLKAY).
