Some retail stocks look vulnerable, Barron's says

In a follow-up story, Barron's says that prudent investors should assume that the recent burst of sunshine will give way to more rainy days for retail. Macy's (M) may look inexpensive but its earnings per share are expected to tumble in each of the next two years, J.C. Penney (JCP) is in a long-term fight for its existence, Sears Holdings (SHLD) makes the former look like Amazon (AMZN), and Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) sells a deflationary good at a dying venue against a fashion headwind, the report added. On the other hand, Barron's argued that Wal-Mart's (WMT) improvement remains intriguing, Home Depot (HD) and TJX (TJX) remain long-term winners, and Five Below (FIVE) seems to be a genuine fast-grower. Jefferies sees some 'green shoots,' trims Macy's target to $20
Jefferies analyst Randal Konik says closely managed inventory lead to gross margin upside in Macy's Q3, which offset comp weakness. The analyst likes Macy's steps to drive traffic with initiatives across marketing, merchandising, and omni capabilities. He remains "guarded," however, around the secular headwinds in the mall-based department store space. In a post-earnings research note titled "Some Green Shoots Here, But We Remain Guarded L-Term," Konik lowered his price target for Macy's shares to $20 from $21 and keeps a Hold rating on the name.

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. General Motors (GM) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst David Tamberrino saying his price target of $32 offers 28% potential downside. The analyst continues to believe the North America auto cycle has peaked and he remains cautious on the sector. 2. Merck (MRK) downgraded to Hold from Buy at SunTrust and to Equal Weight from Overweight at Morgan Stanley, as well as Barclays. 3. J.C. Penney (JCP) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Citi, to Neutral from Buy at Northcoast, and to Neutral from Positive at Susquehanna. 4. Macy's (M) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Citi with analyst Paul Lejuez saying the retailer's sales and margins have been pressured for several years, and J.C. Penney's weak third quarter preannouncement on Friday serves as reminder of just how challenging the department store space is. 5. Under Armour (UAA, UA) downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at BofA/Merrill with analyst Robert Ohmes saying he expects management to lower fourth quarter guidance on its Q3 conference call due to the highly promotional environment. J.C. Penney quarter raises several concerns, says Citi
Although the better than expected sales in J.C. Penney's Q3 led to a short squeeze, the quarter raised several concerns, Citi analyst Paul Lejuez tells investors in a post-earnings research note. Transactions were still down even with all the promotions and higher penetration of credit in appliances is a risk, the analyst contends. Further, he believes the comp boost from appliances is likely to slow meaningfully in Q4. Lejuez continues to believe Penny's "high amount of debt on the business leaves little value left for equity holders." He keeps a Sell rating on the shares with a $1.50 price target.

He likes management's simplification of marketing, its value messaging and execution, and leveraging of non-apparel categories, which should drive greater consistency in traffic and growth. Chen maintains his Market Perform rating and $4 price target on J.C. Penney shares as he looks for visibility on greater consistency in traffic trends.

TJX stands to benefit from Bon-Ton closures, says Morgan Stanley
After analyzing which department stores and off-price retailers have the greatest overlap with troubled retailer Bon-Ton Stores (BONT), Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger found that over 40% of Bon-Ton's have a TJX (TJX) concept within a one mile radius and she sees it as the retailer that could benefit the most from a Bon-Ton liquidity event. Though Sears (SHLD) has the greatest overlap overall, there is no evidence to suggest it, nor Kohl's (KSS) and J.C. Penney (JCP), have been able to capitalize on Bon-Ton's struggles so far, added Greenberger.

Whirlpool leaving Sears positive for Best Buy, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba views Whirlpool (WHR) no longer offering appliances in Sears (SHLD) stores or online as "another incremental positive" for Best Buy (BBY). While picking up Whirlpool sales will have a "relatively insignificant impact" on Best Buy's annual earnings, Sears can no longer claim it carries all of the major U.S. appliance brands, which should accelerate its market share losses, Chukumba tells investors in a research note. He thinks Sears is "inching closer and closer" to a bankruptcy and reiterates a Buy rating on Best Buy with a $72 price target. The stock in morning trading is up 87c to $56.89.

Citi ups XPO target to $110, sees takeover value closer to $120
Citi analyst Christian Wetherbee raised his price target for XPO Logistics (XPO) to $110 from $75 after Recode reported Friday that Home Depot (HD) has contemplated an acquisition of the company, partially as a defensive move to prevent Amazon (AMZN) from doing the same. In a research note titled "Buyer or Seller, There are Lots of Ways to Win," Wetherbee argues that XPO CEO Brad Jacobs is likely to be willing to maximize shareholder value either as a buyer or seller if the opportunity was right. Friday's article likely adds a takeout premium to XPO shares, at least near-term, the analyst adds. His new price target reflects this dynamic along with a "strong fundamental story." The analyst, however, believes a takeout bid would need to be higher, closer to $120 per share, due to the "significant potential value" XPO can create as a standalone company. Wetherbee keeps a Buy rating on XPO shares, which closed Friday up 14%, or $11.32, to $90.01.

Piper sees Henry Schein positioned well against Amazon in Florida
After visiting one of Henry Schein's (HSIC) top five consumable distribution centers, in Jacksonville, Florida, a market where Amazon (AMZN) has recently made investments, Piper Jaffray analyst Sarah James says the company's offerings may stack up well to Amazon. She highlights Henry Schein's ability to distribute 94% of orders next day with a 99% accuracy rate. The analyst believes the company's customer retention could be higher than the market expects driven by partnerships with dentists to manage inventory and maximize revenue generating space. Henry Schein's main defense against Amazon is customer service and the "sticky behavior" of doctors/dentists, James tells investors in a research note titled "Learning from Ground Zero of the War on Amazon and Dental Consumable Trends." She keeps an Overweight rating on Henry Schein with a $78 price target.

XPO Logistics price target raised to $105 on possible bid at Macquarie
Macquarie analyst James Clement commented on reports from last week that Home Depot (HD) had internal discussions to acquire XPO Logistics (XPO), in part to keep the company out of Amazon's (AMZN) hands. The analyst said both Home Depot and Amazon are material Last Mile customers of XPO, with growth in the business driven by eCommerce trends for heavy goods that often require "white glove" installation, neither of which FedEx nor UPS provide. Clement raised Outperform rated XPO estimates to reflect what he thinks was a better-than-expected holiday season and increased his price target to $105 from $80 to reflect a possible bid from Home Depot and/or Amazon.

Wedbush analyst Seth Basham notes that e-Commerce continues to take channel share from bricks and mortar, accounting for an estimated 20% of holiday sales. While retailers such as Williams-Sonoma (WSM), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) and Pier 1 Imports (PIR) continue to adapt, he believes they not only continue to lose share to online retailers including Amazon.com (AMZN) and Wayfair (W), but also face increasing costs of serving omnichannel shoppers. Mattress retail remains mixed, with Mattress Firm's recent improving sales trends and financing an incremental negative for Tempur Sealy (TPX).

Morgan Stanley cautious on Abercrombie & Fitch sustaining momentum
After Abercrombie & Fitch surprisingly beat its comp guidance in Q3 powered by a strong performance from Hollister, Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger said she remains cautious that the company's momentum can hold into the holiday quarter and 2018. The Abercrombie brand is "likely irreparable," said Greenberger, noting that the firm's recent apparel survey indicated that Abercrombie's Net Promoter Score continues to be in the bottom three among the 30 brands surveyed. The analyst is keeping his Sector Perform rating, reflecting "significant secular headwinds" and the lack of visibility on the company's longer-term margin profile. Morris says the company may be "starting to find its feet", surpassing comps expectations by a wide margin, as traffic trends have picked up and conversion rates have improved "noticeably". The analyst is keeping his Market Perform rating, saying that while the improvement in the Hollister division is encouraging, more sustainable improvement is needed for added visibility on earnings potential.

Walmart upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Citi
Citi analyst Kate McShane upgraded Walmart (WMT) to Buy and raised her price target for the shares to $117 from $106 saying the stock has "more room to run" in 2018. The retailing giant closed yesterday up 79c to $97.90. The company's "aggressive" omnichannel strategy will continue to drive "significant" sales growth, McShane tells investors in a research note. Further, the analyst believes Walmart's e-commerce operations are emerging as a "true challenger" to Amazon (AMZN). She sees both of these factors driving multiple expansion for Walmart shares. McShane also expects the company to announce a dividend increase. The analyst makes Walmart her number two pick in Broadlines and Hardlines for 2018, behind top pick O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY).

XPO Logistics purchase by Home Depot not likely, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Brian Nagel notes that Recode reported recently that its sources indicate Home Depot (HD) may be considering a bid for XPO Logistics (XPO). However, the analyst says that his knowledge of Home Depot and the strategic thinking of management suggest that such a move is unlikely. Nagel is hard-pressed to see Home Depot purchasing a transportation and logistics firm the size and scope of XPO. Buying the entirety of XPO would propel the company into entirely different lines of business, he adds. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating on Home Depot's shares.

Home Depot deal to buy XPO Logistics may not make sense, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman said he understands why a potential tie-up of Home Depot (HD) with XPO Logistics (XPO) may be speculated, as has been the case in recent press reports, though he also sees reasons such a hypothetical deal may not make sense. He notes that Home Depot is building out its own internal supply chain and purchasing a separate logistics operator "may be redundant," he tells investors. Home Depot "has an omni-channel backbone like no other retailer," so purchasing a logistics operator may be unnecessary, Gutman contends.
