VIX ticks higher on the busiest day for the options market in 2018
VIX ticks higher on the busiest day for the options market in 2018. The fear gauge ticking .29 higher to 10.15 and showing notable resilience in the face of a 17 point gain for the S&P 500. Overall trading activity has been heavy into afternoon action Friday. Projected volume is 25.8M contracts after 11.6M calls and 7.8K puts changed hands through 14:20 ET. At this pace, today ranks in the top five highest volume trading days of the past twelve months (not bad for a Friday before a three-day weekend). Daily call volume at 15.5M would equal the highest levels of 2017, when 15.5M contracts traded on 11/29/17 (driven partly by heavy ex-div activity in BAC). VIX calls, including 223K Mar 16 and 100K Feb 19s, represent a respectable slice of the today's call volume at 761K contracts.
