On The Fly: Top stock stories for Friday

Stocks opened in positive territory and with the exception of a slight dip shortly after the open were trending higher throughout the session. The strength was broad-based as each of the major averages posted gains of more than 1%. Today's advance pushed the S&P to a gain for the holiday shortened week. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In U.S. energy news, Baker Hughes reported that the U.S. rig count is up 3 from last week at 978 rigs. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) rallied 10.4% after the company's better than expected quarterly report and announcement of plans to return $7B to shareholders through FY19 in the form of share repurchases and a 50% dividend increase. The other half of the former HP, HP Inc. (HPQ), rose 3.4% following its own better than expected quarterly results... Blue Buffalo Pet Products (BUFF) advanced 17.2% after General Mills (GIS) announced an agreement to buy the pet food maker for $40 per share in cash, representing an enterprise value of approximately $8B... Nordstrom (JWN) shares jumped 6.5% after Reuters reported that the Nordstrom founding family group is finalizing plans to submit an offer to take the company private. The family met with investment banks last week and are hoping to submit an offer as soon as next month, sources told Reuters. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers was Momo (MOMO), which rose 17.1% after it reached a deal to acquire Tantan Limited in a cash and stock transaction. Higher after reporting quarterly results was Trade Desk (TTD), which surged 23.8%. Additionally, KemPharm (KMPH) rose 14% following FDA approval of Apadaz for the short-term management of acute pain for certain patients for whom other treatments are inadequate. Among the notable losers was Gogo (GOGO), which slipped 2.7% after JPMorgan downgraded the stock from Neutral, saying the shares will be "challenged" in 2018 given the rapid pace of American Airlines (AAL) de-install and the flat to down average monthly service revenue per aircraft. Also lower, after reporting quarterly results were Universal Display (OLED) and First Solar (FSLR), which fell a respective 15.8% and 6.8%. INDEXES: The Dow rose 347.51, or 1.39%, to 25,309.99, the Nasdaq gained 127.31, or 1.77%, to 7,337.39, and the S&P 500 advanced 43.34, or 1.6%, to 2,747.30.

HP Enterprise fundamentals remain attractive, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron raised his price target on Hewlett Packard Enterprise to $20 from $219 shares after the company reported strong January-quarter results along with above-consensus April quarter guidance as well as a boosted full year earnings per share view. Kidron told investors in a research note that the company's underlying business trends are likely better than investors believe and that its focus on targeted growth areas is delivering. He says fundamentals remain attractive as operating margin is set to expand from here, despite more difficult year-over-year comparisons in the second half of fiscal 2018 that will likely limit back-half revenue growth.

Trade Desk pullback on AT&T speculation a buying opportunity, says Susquehanna
Susquehanna analyst Shyam Patil attributes the pullback in Trade Desk (TTD) to speculation that AT&T (T) may be building its own demand-side platform, or DSP, but he does not think this is the case. Patil believes the market misinterpreted comments made by AT&T about plans to build out its own automated advertising platform. He actually thinks AT&T is building out its own supply-side platform, or SSP, which most likely would integrate into DSPs, such as Trade Desk, over time. Also, Patil does not think AT&T is a relevant DSP customer for Trade Desk. The analyst keeps a Positive rating on Trade Desk and recommend buying on the pullback.

William Blair sees potential for 'major rebound or squeeze' in Gogo shares
William Blair analyst Louie DiPalma says that with Gogo (GOGO) shares near an all-time low and down 20% year-to-date, sentiment is "overly negative." The stock is seemingly pricing in "worse-than-consensus" earnings and guidance when the company reports on February 22, DiPalma tells investors in a research note titled "Show Gogo Some Valentine's Day Love." The analyst sees potential for a "major rebound or squeeze" if management merely brackets consensus with its 2018 EBITDA guidance and reiterates its view that the company is fully funded. Gogo "does not need to do anything extraordinary" to trade in the $20s in 2019, the analyst contends. He notes that short interest is now 25% higher than when Gogo was trading at its all-time low, of $7.80 in June 2016. Further, ViaSat (VSAT) on February 8 implicitly lowered its first-half American Airlines (AAL) retrofit installation target by roughly 67%, which is a positive for Gogo's 2018 EBITDA, DiPalma adds. He keeps an Outperform rating on Gogo.

First Solar outlook has 'plenty of upside left,' says Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Vishal Shah believes First Solar has "plenty of upside left" following the company's better than expected Q4 results and outlook. With the S6 ramp largely on track and the company being largely sold out through the first half of 2020, further upside to the 2019/2020 earnings outlook is likely, Shah tells investors in a post-earnings research note. He reiterates a Buy rating on First Solar with a $75 price target.
