American Airlines announces order for 47 new Boeing 787 widebody aircraft

American Airlines (AAL) announced an order for 47 new Boeing (BA) 787 widebody aircraft consisting of 22 787-8s scheduled to begin arriving in 2020 and 25 787-9s scheduled to begin arriving in 2023. The 787-8s will replace American's Boeing 767-300s, while later 787-9 deliveries will replace Airbus A330-300s and older 777-200 widebody aircraft. The entire order of new 787s will be powered with General Electric's (GE) GEnx-1B engines. American currently operates a fleet of 35 787s to destinations such as Tokyo, Sao Paulo and Paris. American will operate 89 787s once all aircraft under its previous order and the current order are delivered. As part of the strategy to simplify its fleet, American agreed with Airbus (EADSY) to terminate its order for 22 A350s, which was originally placed by US Airways. As part of this order, American has also reached an agreement with Boeing to defer the delivery of 40 737 MAX aircraft previously scheduled to arrive between 2020 and 2022. The revised delivery schedule will better align with planned retirements of other narrowbody aircraft.

American Airlines upgraded to Outperform from at Bernstein
As previously reported, Bernstein analyst David Vernon upgraded American Airlines to Outperform from Market Perform following the recent selloff and as he sees sufficient upside. The analyst thinks the hit to sentiment on industry capacity discipline has created a unique buying opportunity and believes it is only a matter of time until the market reflects higher expectations of forward earnings in a higher share price.

JPMorgan sees Airlines raising Q1 outlooks at next week's conference
JPMorgan analyst James Baker believes several Airlines will raise their Q1 guidance at his firm's Aviation, Transportation and Industrials Conference next week. He expects near-term consensus estimates to move higher for the airlines coming out of the presentations, particularly for United Continental (UAL). The analyst recommends increasing exposure to the sector ahead of the conference. He raised his estimates for United the most, taking his Q1 earnings per share forecast up to 32c from 3c. Other names in the space include American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), JetBlue (JBLU) and Southwest (LUV).

William Blair sees potential for 'major rebound or squeeze' in Gogo shares
William Blair analyst Louie DiPalma says that with Gogo (GOGO) shares near an all-time low and down 20% year-to-date, sentiment is "overly negative." The stock is seemingly pricing in "worse-than-consensus" earnings and guidance when the company reports on February 22, DiPalma tells investors in a research note titled "Show Gogo Some Valentine's Day Love." The analyst sees potential for a "major rebound or squeeze" if management merely brackets consensus with its 2018 EBITDA guidance and reiterates its view that the company is fully funded. Gogo "does not need to do anything extraordinary" to trade in the $20s in 2019, the analyst contends. He notes that short interest is now 25% higher than when Gogo was trading at its all-time low, of $7.80 in June 2016. Further, ViaSat (VSAT) on February 8 implicitly lowered its first-half American Airlines (AAL) retrofit installation target by roughly 67%, which is a positive for Gogo's 2018 EBITDA, DiPalma adds. He keeps an Outperform rating on Gogo.

Chinese tariffs negative for Boeing, limited impact, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Douglas Harned notes that China said it would impose a 25% tariff on U.S.-produced aircraft weighing between 15,000kg-45,000kg. The analyst sees Chinese tariffs as negative for Boeing (BA), but with limited impact if current orders and the MAX-8 remain unaffected. Harned does not see that Airbus (EADSY) would benefit materially, as narrow tariffs would offer little advantage. The risk of a trade war driven recession is now higher, but the analyst does not assume one. Harned reiterates an Outperform rating on both Boeing and Airbus.

Boeing risk-reward improved after tariff-fueled pullback, says Morgan Stanley
China's potential 25% tariff exceeded expectations, though it was equal in size to U.S. actions under Section 301, said Morgan Stanley analyst Rajeev Lalwani, who notes that for aerospace the tariff would be levied on aircraft with an empty weight exceeding 15,000kg but less than 45,000kg. This range may include the 737-700 and 737 MAX 7, noted the analyst, who estimates the backlog of those two aircraft for China represents less than about 1% of the total. If the next step is negotiation and resolution, which Morgan Stanley believes is probable, Lalwani said he sees "a clearer path" to his price target of $373 on Boeing share, which fell 1% yesterday to $327.44. He keeps an Equal Weight rating on the stock.

Bombardier, Airbus CSeries venture a net positive for both, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Robert Spingarn views Airbus (EADSY)/Bombardier (BDRBF) CSeries venture as a net positive for both players. Bombardier should enjoy higher sales and lower costs than it would have captured alone, he contends, adding that the deal also offers a solution to the CSeries trade dispute with Boeing (BA), with the establishment of a second final assembly line at Airbus' Alabama facility to serve U.S. customers. For Airbus, Spingarn sees this deal as a marginal positive, as it expands its product range with a good aircraft platform at a relatively small cost. He reiterates an Outperform rating for Bombardier, while raising his price target on the shares to C$3.50 from C$3.25.

General Electric's 2018 closer to normal than many think, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Stephen Tusa sees downside risk to estimates for General Electric in the near term. In a fresh research note titled "'Normal' is a Relative Term: A Fresh Look at The GE Power Model," Tusa says his 2018 estimates for GE remain below consensus. Debate continues around the sum-of-the-parts and what could be done to unlock value, Tusa writes. He believes that after nine months in the role, management is likely to have a "better story to tell than the one they told in November the next time we hear from them." GE is already discussing actively with some investors the path forward for improvement off of what is perceived to be depressed operating levels, the analyst reveals. Tusa believes, however, that GE's 2018 is closer to "normal" than many think. The analyst sees support for his Underweight rating on the shares with an $11 price target. General Electric closed yesterday up 15c to $13.43.

Stifel cuts GE target to $13, makes 'modest proposal' about pension capping
Stifel analyst Robert McCarthy lowered his FY18 EPS estimate for General Electric to 95c from 98c and reduced his FY19 EPS estimate to $1.05 from $1.10, citing continued challenges at Power, expectations for slower growth across long cycle businesses and material cost inflation challenges. Along with trimming his forecasts, he cut his price target on GE shares to $13 from $15. Additionally, McCarthy made a "modest proposal" that GE management, which he said has recently been "virtue signaling" a change in the accountability culture at the company, should consider capping the pension benefits of its Supplementary Pension Plan for long tenured, senior employees and executive management. The analyst keeps a Hold rating on GE.

JPMorgan's Tusa wonders how long GE's rating agencies can stay silent
Despite "material changes" in fundamentals, little progress on asset sales, a lack of "clean numbers," and an SEC investigation, ratings agencies covering General Electric "remain on the sidelines" with their commentary, seemingly giving the company "precious time to work their way out," JPMorgan analyst Stephen Tusa tells investors in a research note. The analyst points out that during the Great Recession, GE was AAA rated while needing a bail-out. "We scratch our heads as to the repeated inertia," Tusa writes. The analyst remains cautious on shares of General Electric saying its fundamentals are worse than expected. Tusa wonders how long the rating agencies "can support a currently unjustified rating." He keeps an Underweight rating on GE shares with an $11 price target. The closed yesterday down 36c to $13.12.

No news from GE could be considered good news, says Citi
Outside of a potential investment from Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), "no news" could be viewed as "good news" for General Electric (GE), Citi analyst Andrew Kaplowitz tells investors in a research note. No significant new "issues" have emerged following the announcement of GE's insurance reserves funding plan, nor in the company's annual filing published in late February, Kaplowitz argues. He believes that the more time passes with no significant new issues emerging, the more investors can gain confidence that new management can fully focus on executing a turnaround. Further, he sees "at least three specific areas in which inflections over the coming year could serve as catalysts to changing the narrative:" improving cash generation, asset sale announcements, and potentially inflecting energy end markets. Kaplowitz keeps a Buy rating on shares of General Electric. The stock closed yesterday down 36c to $13.12.
